Are they that good? I keep hearing good things about their album.

There was one day last week where three or four sections of the front page had CYHSY content... news, single review, album review, maybe even interview.
combined with the dreadful band name, I can't say pitchfork's enormous boner for that band is making me want to do anything other than avoid them. Pitchfork's liked good stuff before, but it looks like a publicist was paid a lot of money and did an almost too-good job.

I like them a lot. But I like band names like that. I also like "I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness" although I don't think I like the actual band. The Clap Your Hands record is really cool.
It's not just Pitchfork that likes them; they got a little local press, but it seems they still haven't played outside NYC. Pitchfork just knew this band was inevitably going to be popular and jumped on it. I don't know how they found out about them, but the band doesn't seem to have a publicist of any sort, and it seems more likely that Schreiber knows someone at the Gothamist (http://gothamist.com) who booked CYHSY for their "Moveable Hype" show.
I don't read the Gothamist, but I've heard of it before, and there were a lot of people at the show, and only two of the bands appeared to be signed to any kind of record label, so it seems to me like wasn't a little thing.
It seems to me Pitchfork just wanted credit for "breaking" them, which I think they're only a little uncomfortable with. In the interview two of them did for Tiny Mix Tapes they make it seem like they don't really know much about Pitchfork.

will the band ever release an album as great as "Gay?" by 12 Rods or "El Producto" by Walt Mink?

yeah they were getting quite a bit of hype here in NYC for a while, i remember it picking up in december or maybe january. lots of live shows with mostly stellar reviews. i wanted to see them live but never got around to it, but PFM raving about the album made me v curious to hear it.
i think they're good but not all that. a good chunk of the album is kinda flat but i like a couple songs a whole lot, enough that i want to hear what they do next. (curious about the live show too.)
i saw that TMT interview, interesting stuff.

Those guys are pretty poor and don't have a publicist of any kind. They've just been really frickin' lucky with the bloggosphere folks and getting that Pianos residency back in January. The album itself is really fun, although that guy's voice tends to get grating after a while. Live the band is actually pretty damn excellent---great musicianship. Super drummer.
