Daniel Johnston: where to start

anyone have any suggestions of the more essential Johnston releases?

isn't there some anthology of his that just came out? all i know is the stuff on the 'kids' soundtrack, incidentally. i saw him live once and lasted six songs. (the first one was amazing though.)

there was a double album called the early recordings volume 1. it came out a couple years ago. it was a re-release of i think his first two albums. this album is probably worth it just for "hate song."
