Wow!

Chan really switched it up huh? who expected her to change and add all those kooky lyrics! I love her! Her voice was so great, Im so glad she played Maybe Not.

PS: Paul Shafer, although Canadian (like me) Eats it....huge

She seemed really nervous to me.... Or maybe i just imagined it. Dunno, her voice seemed to quiver a bit at the start, and i thot she missed a few notes. i was so elated watching her that i guess i forgot to pay attention to the song; i didn't even notice the lyrics. But she did screw-up once, didn't she? (i taped it, so i'm gonna watch it again in the morning.) And didn't it seem really FRIGGIN' weird everytime Paul said "Cat Power"? Like he might as well have been saying "tunafish smegma" or something. (Well, we'll have to get used to it, i guess.)

And yup, he had no momentum. But that's okay. Just wonder if Chan was disappointed that she didn't get to meet Letterman? i mean, she basically made her t.v. debut on the Paul Shafer (Shaffer?Sheaffer?)show.

But it was awesome watching her perform. i can't wait for the concert!

(And whoo! also, for her.)

The performance was beautiful! The reason Schafer sounded weird saying "CAT POWER" is because he was saying it like you would say a name...he might have been confused.

I general I was impressed, and didn't want it to end.

that was a real treat for sure.

that song, i dunno. It makes me hopefull but sometimes i shed a few tears when i hear it, it's powerful. she's powerfull. that was great, you never get to see anything good on tv, but that was definitely not true today.

No Kidding!
She's more like an angel descend from the skies or something. I don't know what it is, but there's something with her. And on top of that she makes heavenlike music...

She almost makes me belive in a god.

I thought Chan on Letterman was really, really good! I can't believe somebody like Norah Jones gets so much attention yet someone like Chan has such a better voice and is so much more original. Oh well. True art hardly ever gets the real recognition it should. And sometimes that is good I guess.
By the way, Chan was wearing her trademark shirt again. She wears that everywhere. She looked great though. What a gift she is!

Actually, Norah Jones has an amazing voice, way better than Chan's.

Well, I'm not a voice coach or anything. But I would take Chan's voice over Norah Jones any day.

Is Norah Jones the brunette? She's a hack, man ... i've heard a thousand like her. Not to say she can't sing, but there just ain't no sparkle, baby. Ella Fitzgerald had a technically amazing voice (or Sarah Vaughn, if you like), and i love listening to her ... but it's Billie Holliday that makes me wanna jump off a bridge.

Chan has the kinda' voice makes you want to jump off a bridge.

how did we digress from the topic here? from chan to norah? all i got to say is norah jones is following me to places i'd rather not mention i've been.. uhm like shopping areas, dentists, restaurants and malls.. errrrr

i guess i should mention the guns n roses effect of too much too soon.. lauryn hill, norah..

norah's got a sellable, professional quality to her... but chan feels more about being alive. not compromising herself for anything...she's flawed but man,, you can feel her..

does anyone know when that show is going to be repeated??..i really want to see it...........i will PAY anyone to make me a copy if someone has one.........

i think nora is nowhere near half as good as chan...her voice isnt anything special and neither is her music.....in my humble opinion*

WHat we've got here is simply a matter of taste vs. talent.

When it comes to music, I'm sure most of us will always take sloppy and undertalented with heart and wit over technically proficient wankery. It's why I won't touch Dream Theater, but will pay fifteen bucks to see some local punk band to drunkenly mash out covers.

I think Kannberg (or maybe it was Ibold) once said in an interview that aspiring musicians should avoid learning too much music theory. The point was that technical prowess can inhibit creativity.

I'm sure if you find that originality conflicts with order, Norah Jones is very palatable.

I like Cat Power.

Norah Jones : Celine Dion :: Cat Power : Joni Mitchell

Brad Delp

Anyone who compares Norah Jones to Celine Dion must have serious calcium deposits in their ears.

And Chan is nowhere NEAR having produced a body of work that can even be JOKINGLY compared to Joni Mitchell's. Let's not go overboard here, folks.

P.S. Top 40 equals 40 albums to AVOID? Man, that's sad sad sad...

Is it just me or is Joni Mitchell severely overated...maybe I've just heard all her bad records or something...it's too hippy or something. Chan doesnt really remind me of Joni anyway. Chan's not "that" kind of folky in my opinion.
As far as Norah Jones is concerned, no she's not Celine Dion by a long shot (that's a bit extreme) but the best thing I can say about her music & her voice is that its really nice...but that's about it. If I frequented Starbuck's I think I'd enjoy it more..that's just the way it makes me feel.. sorry. Cat Power's record debuted on billboard in the low 100's which is near the top 40, so yes that other persons logic is flawed, because although most of the records that make it into the top 40 are crap, you can sometimes find decent stuff there (Dylan, Johnny Cash, Beck, Radiohead, Wilco, etc) I think what people are trying to say is that technical vocal abillity doesnt equal uniqueness & true emotiveness. (is that a word?) I do prefer Norah Jones vocal style to the overblown vocal olympics of today (Christina Aguleria and the like)
I'm not sure where Chan fits in , but there's no denying that her voice has something about it that sets her apart from others & is definately welcomed.

I think Chan's vocals (because frankly, it's not always so much her voice as her delivery) are best referred to as simply 'non-traditional.

to soot:

right on. everybody takes everyone's posts FAR too literally.
I'm basically sick of Norah Jones current album at this point, having owned it from its release and it is SO overplayed it's sick. Norah herself said on "Austin City Limits" that SHE is sick of the album.

Celine Dion bugs.

Joni Mitchell, folky, yes, but that is only one of many avenues her career has taken. Check out "For the Roses" and her DVD release of "Painting with Music".

to brad delp:

from such a simple post, you have really thickened it up. Who said ANYTHING about a "body of work". I know I didn't.

Lighten up.

and YES, top 40 albums can be good, but the exceptions are rare, and most of the albums are over-produced hooks with looks.

well I think we can all agree norah looks better then chan. I've never heard a Jones song, but I assume chan is more talented. but if i had to choose id rather hook up with jones.

Does anyone know what's that dark thing Chan's showing on her hand during Letterman performance? Is that some notes or some weird bandage or something? I know it's not the mic's shadow as I 1st tought.

Norah's something else, another style in every way, both sing mostly smooth tho. I like Norah, but I love Chan. To hell with who looks better.

Cat Power Rocks them all...

Norah jones doesn't even write most of her songs..

Sarah McLachlan and Cat Power, along with Radiohead...

But Jacqueline Du Pre rocks them all more...

Kate Bush rocks Sarah McLachlan back into the sludge from whence she came.... (And all those other Girl-ballad-babies.)

Have to admit i don't know Jacqueline Du Pre. (Tho it sounds familiar.)

Yes, Kate Bush is pretty amazing, but unfortunately appears to have voluntarily dropped off the face of the earth.

The Jacqueline Du Pre I know of was a classical cellist who died in the late '80s, so I don't understand the comparison there.

I place Sarah McLachlan and Norah Jones in roughly the same group: they're nice voices to listen to, but they don't do anything special for me.

I have a hard time comparing Chan with anyone else. She's like no one else out there. It's not just her voice. It's very hard for me to explain. Her music just gets to me.

the 'bandage' on her hand during letterman was a 'no war' sticker; she was bummed that it didn't end up being visible. she changed her song from 'i don't blame you' to 'maybe not' at the last minute because she felt its sentiments were more appropriate for the unfortunate times... nils

I keep seeing Norah Jones as a comparison, but the person that I feel really gives Cat Power a run for her money is Shannon Wright. Her music is super emotional, she's not manufactured, she writes all her music, and her performances are unmatched by anyone. Watching her perform is somewhat disturbing, and unlike Cat Power she gets a little crazy, it's not all subdued and brooding, she snaps. I still like Chan, but after I heard Shannon Wright, I thought that Chan was like Norah Jones. And I don't know if anyone has been at Starbuck's lately, but they play a lot of Matador stuff. So trying to slight Norah Jones by saying she's too Starbuck's, shit Matador is all over Starbuck's, I used to work there, and it got on my nerves to see the yuppies and soy drinkers and such barking their demands while Malkmus or Thalia Zadeck plays in the background. Plus, you'll never see Shannon Wright on Letterman, which I think is a good thing. She's on tour w/ the Dirty Three I think, if you can catch it, check it out, it will rock your world. But all that said, "What Would The Community Think" and "Myra Lee" are two of the best records ever made.

Read this today & it reminded me of the thread. No other questions, please:

WINNING WAYS

After her multiple wins at this year's Grammy's, NORAH JONES has lots to sing about--and we're not talking the blues! This gal's got style to spare, with super-thick, wavy locks that tumble way past her shoulders. To make tresses like hers take shape, blow-out with a large round brush, then mist hair section by section with styling gel and wind on a large-barrel iron. A crooked center part echoes the rest of the style's super "bent" feel.

There you go, girls. You Too Can Be Just Like Norah.

Well, i guess i'll get back to reading that thread about how Chan catPower Marshall always wears the same damn shirt every gig....
