I recently saw Dig, and really liked what I heard from them. What's a good album to start with?

I'd either grab their first, Methodrone, or their latest, And This Is Our Music.. both of those are top notch.
Or... if you like what you heard but don't really feel the need to get that deep into it, get the 2CD Tepid Peppermint Wonderland career retrospective, which is really a great compilation.
Also, if you go to the Brian Jonestown Massacre website, you can get the entire catalog for free as .ogg files.

Any thoughts on their live show? They're playing the Bowery Ballroom soon and, much as I enjoy their records, I've heard that their shows can be on the difficult side.

well, I think back in the day the reason to go to a BJM show would be to see if they get in a fight or not. but most of the people from then aren't in the band anymore, and Anton's kind of settled down, from what I gather.
I saw them last October and it was really wonderful. I recommend it.
