9000, who did the liars remix? it kills.
btw, i'm mailing out my mixes on monday. unlike some of you other people, i don't have the time or means to make fancy cover art, so i apologize for the strictly aural experience.

unfortunately mine consists of staples and paper as well. Maybe I'll draw some pictures or include collectable polaroids as well.

think it was just remixed by the band.
Hmm, I started picking songs a couple of weeks ago and realized Spring couldn't come fast enough. Then it did and things got brighter (sillier). Looking forward to hearing all the great music from everyone. Thanks for the pinch hit slot, JS!

Digging the 9000 mix right now. Took it with me to Montreal yesterday, and was especially digging Taiconderoga and Pulsallama.
Mine should be out tomorrow, and it too will lack in visual presentation.

I know this is the "My dog ate my homework" of mixtrade excuses, but . . .
My computer took a bow a week or so ago and I only finally got it back up and sort of running last night. Mix was pretty close to finished before hand, so I promise it will go out by the end of this week.
Received the 9000 mix this week and have gone through it about 1 and 1/2 times. So far, tracks 1 (feelies), 8 & 9 are my favorites.

oh man, did winterversion use "you broke my heart"? i had that one earmarked right from the start! that's what i get for being late...
Crappers! I just burned off the master copy of my mix, and something's screwy with it--the timing hangs up on track 9 and, even though the rest of the cd keeps playing, every remaining track displays 1:52 for its duration. Not a big deal, really, but I worry some people's cd players won't be able to read it.
I'll try burning it again on a different brand of cd and see what happens.

I didn't think brand of CD-R would make a difference, but I've found that Sony CD-Rs seem to be a lot more cooperative with burns than these generic cds I got from a computer store.

Just got Tony's in the mail. Wow! Incredible packaging, man. It's so beautifully and elegantly done. More importantly, I'm enjoying the tunes. I'm not familiar w/ many of the bands so that's a plus, too. How'd you hear of Thao Nguyen? What a great song.
Mine should be out by the middle of next week. I have a huge paper due on Monday, so my life is sort of on hold until I hand that in.

That Bats song reminded me - one of the nicest promotional items I was ever sent was a pair of Bats "Afternoon in Bed" pillowcases from one of the guys at Flying Nun to coincide with the single release.

Thanks. It's good that you're impressed with the packaging, because I've been listening to the mix again and I'm not really happy with it. Tried too hard to include things I haven't read much about on the board, instead of going with songs I really like. So if you think it sucks, just check out that packaging again. Fuckin' awesome, right? Should've made it shinier though, and maybe with moving parts.

I got the Futureman mix last night. I listened to most of it on the way to work this morning and I'm really digging it especially that Frankenixon song. Where's a good place to start with them?
I was actually going to use that same exact Rachel's track!
Oh, and, 9000, what's a good record to start with King Khan & BBQ?
Oh, and, 9000, what's a good record to start with King Khan & BBQ?
i'm fairly certain they only have one proper album together: the king khan & bbq show on goner records. man, that's a must have. a few months back, matador dave gave a breakdown of their solo work and lent the impression that although it's all good, the joint album is best starting point.

I'm not Futureman, but Depth Perception is their more "rock" album, but Amorphous is their conceptual slow-burner. either is fantastic, but DP is more immediate.

What JS said. The two albums are wildly different. And btw, it was JS that introduced me to Frankenixon.
Salman, I'm enjoying your mix immensely. Is the track by Young and Sexy fairly representative of their overall sound? If so, I need to go shopping. And thanks for the 63 Crayons recommendation as well. Good stuff.
EDIT: and yes, thanks for including that bbq/king kong track, 9000. I have something else to purchase!

Just finished listening to Yovan's mix--sweet!!!!
Thanks for it---lots of fun/fuzz with some classic hip hop for good measure.
Favorites (or should I say new favorites) include the Psychic Ills track and the John B song. I haven't heard any Frank Black solo either, so that was a real treat. Kick ass opener, too :)

They do have a softer-lusher side, but I'd say it's fairly representative of their sound.
I'm assuming the rest of the people in the group got the mix, so here's the tracklisting:
01. The Fentones - Simla Beat Theme
02. Young and Sexy - The Curious Organ
03. Camera Obscura - Keep it Clean
04. 63 Crayons - Ben S Pipes
05. Nita Rossi - London Love
06. The Chimes of Freedom - Jungle Rock
07. Devotchka - Too Tired
08. Françoise Hardy - Doigts
09. Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. - Universe of Romance
10. Lau Nau - Pläkkikanteletar
11. Muzak - Ilha Urbana
12. Do Make Say Think - Horns of a Rabbit
13. Patsy Cline - Leavin' on Your Mind
14. Maow - Mean Mean Man
15. Et Sans - Les Courbes Sanglantes Entendues de l'Organe Trop Uraíment Halluciné
16. Otis Redding & Carla Thomas - Tramp

Group 2: I'm very sorry for my late mix. Computer and personal issues.
Futureman: That Fire track is soooo good. It's like a great, lost Who track -- Nuggets 2 is so on my radar now. Love the Sonic Youth, La's, and Belle & Sebastian songs. The whole mix just sounds like you included a ton of your favorite songs without regard to what we wanted to hear -- it sounds all the better for it.
Salman: Only gone through your mix twice. Your note included with the mix was nice. Overall, it's like the soundtrack to a really great French new wave movie. I've got this strange sense that I've heard some of these songs before. What is that Nita Rossi track from? Makes me feel like James Bond.

mixes went out yesterday because i'm That Guy. thanks for being patient and i love all of yr mixes. salman, that et sans track really is right to my taste and i've never heard this acid mothers temple song (to be fair, i haven't heard a lot of AMT, but i think that has more to do with their tendency to splurge releases)(here's a trivial pursuit fact, vesper edition: cotton casino, for some reason, lives very close to me in VA.).
i realized as i was stuffing packages that the way i formatted my cd cover may be difficult to read. tracklist is highlight-able below.
1. bettye lavette - "i do not want what i have not got"
2. delia gonzalez and gavin russom - "rise" [edit]
3. kaito - "hundred million light years"
4. al green - "how can you mend a broken heart? (swishahouse screwed and chopped remix)"
5. can - vitamin c
6. young jeezy ft. jay-z - "go crazy"
7. esg - "my street"
8. le dust sucker - "mandate my ass"
9. sebastiAn - "h.a.l."
10. demon - "i won't change"
11. franz ferdinand - "the fallen (justice edit)"
12. joakim - "i wish you were gone"
the mixing might be a little funky in spots, but for the most part it seems okay. i tried to include as many different things as possible, but i realized once i got through a working tracklist that i lacked a lot of rock. i don't know what that will mean for each of you individually...

Great closer. I got that bands entire 90's catalogue for like $8 bones when I was in Chicago a few years back. Some of the best $8 I've ever spent. The band should have been bigger then they were....

Chainsaw Kittens is one of the few Oklahoma bands that didn't suck, they are missed.
I got that bands entire 90's catalogue for like $8 bones when I was in Chicago a few years back. Ironically enough, I bought that CD-EP the last time I was in Toronto. (I'd had it on cassette for many years before that, though)
I think that band's long overdue for some widespread favorable appreciation.

i hope everybody enjoys it! i would've included more if (1) i had been on the ball enough to really draw up a thumping playlist and (2) i could do more with my mixing program. it isn't bad, and i haven't taken/had the time to learn all its tricks, but that crossfade can only go so far. one day, one day.
pawnbroker, could you tell me where to start with horace silver, the pretty things and art blakey? i listened to your mix while running errands in my car, and the combination of sunshine, sleepy heat and tunes was perfect!

sweet transitions. which program?

it's called Magix. pretty cheap, but it is also user friendly (although actually getting mp3s into the program can be a pain in the ass). i don't know how other mixing programs work, but it is nice to have a lot of features available just through dragging on lines. i imagine it can do a lot more though.

v,
i'm no pb, however i'd suggest moanin' if you don't already have it and art blakey and the jazz messengers a night at birdland or at the cafe bohemia as they've got horace silver on them as well. . .

Cool, glad you liked the mix, especially since I wasn't really happy with how it turned out (I kind of felt like I was trying to do too many things at once).
I'll second rhoops Art Blakey recommendation of Moanin', which is the album from which I drew that track. I would add that A Night in Tunisia is even better, at least the title track (a Dizzy Gillespie composition).
All I have of Horace Silver is Song for My Father, which is pretty great.
The common thread to both The Jazz Messengers and that Horace Silver album is the trumpet player, Lee Morgan. He is phenomenal. I have his The Sidewinder and just picked up The Gigolo, which are both very good.
The Pretty Things: S.F. Sorrow is one of the obscure gems of 60's psychedelia. The track on my mix is from their 1970 album Parachute, which is quite good, sort of Meddle-era Floyd, but not quite up to the former's level.

At last! I've heard that Le Dust Sucker track countless times out on the razz and always meant to find out what it was. Nice one Vesper.
JS, seriously, did you put anything into that envelope that US customs might seize?

hey people in my group!
I'm a big asshole!
Its in the works, but will still be a bit. It'll be worth the wait, I swear swear swear. The mixes I've gotten have been awesome, I won't keep you waiting too much longer!
As far as Group II is concerned, I've only received mixes from Yovan and Sostark. Both are excellent. Spring Provides and The New Teller are my favorite tracks, respectively. Fiona was also nice enough to send an extra disc of pearls out to me. Believe the hype!
I'm still looking forward to three more...

Same here, and of the tracks I wasn't familiar with, those grabbed me too. Plus the Paul Westerberg which I probably own but can't recall!
Also, thanks for the Bach, enjoyed it immensely. It's an age since I played double bass so my estimation is somewhat unqualified, but I found it absorbing from a technical perspective.

I'm still looking forward to three more...I think you're in my group and I am a bad, bad boy. I've not been able to start for various reasons but I am burning vinyl and cassette to CDR in the other room as I type this, so it should be done soon.
I've received three in the mail so far, last I checked my PO box, but have not opened any yet since I've been naughty and deserve no prizes, yet.

. . . I am burning vinyl and cassette to CDR in the other room as I type this, so it should be done soon.Fuckity, fuckity, fuck, fuck, fuck! My brand new stereo component CD burner sucks shit. Every recording I've made skips and is full of static; even the tiny handful of songs that sound OK on playback on the stereo sound like shit on my computer. So, obviously, I'm not finished yet.
At least you have an excuse, man. The only thing my mixes are waiting on are the covers/tracklists. The cds were burned on March 31st.

now that i'm done w/ exams, my group should expect something soon - stay tuned! i'd apologize more for being late but i've only received one mix so far, from tony (comments soon to come!), so we're all basically in the same boat, it seems...
i've realized that i'm going to be using an embarrassing number of songs on a new romo mix i'm thinking about making a lady friend from other mixes i've received in the past year. the excuse i tell myself is, "i like to keep it fresh." i'll be waiting for paul and mr. hci's highly anticipated contributions so you can both feel sort of weirded out and used by now.
p.s. what happened to indie_man? he's m.i.a.!

is there a deadbeat in group 2 or did a disc get lost in the mail?
is there a deadbeat in group 2 or did a disc get lost in the mail?
One of the things i've learned, along with some great new bands, is that that deadline is totally meaningless.
Also, I've managed to totally alienate a certain board member who's not in my group, but who offered to send out a Destroyer mix to all comers. I guess I could just as easily download or buy the songs but this is now like a friendship bracelet that you guilt someone into giving you (ie the sweetest accessory).

JS I didn't get either the original or second copy you mailed me - maybe if you get a chance you could ysi it pretty please?
none of ya'll are the culprits (unfortunately) in my group. your credit is good here anyway, so it wouldn't matter.

yeah, sorry d00ds. work-related oddities (getting a temp job, working on it becoming permanent, it NOT becoming permanent) and planning a wedding have sapped my brains. The playlists are ready, they're awesome, all I need to do is burn them and make artwork and they're done. I PROMISE I'll get these done before the wedding (June 17th), cos otherwise it'll be more like late July, and none of us want that.
I'll get these done before the wedding (June 17th)d00d! I'm so out of the loop. I knew you'd gotten engaged and all the hoopla, but I had no idea nuptials were coming up (and so soon!). Congrats mang.

I put them in the mail today, finally!
Well, I didn't send one to Indie_Man since everyone else indicated they had received nothing from him and he hasn't posted in months.
hci your mail just arrived. i'm sure the music is all pretty kickass but right now i'm just soaking all the matériel. the liner notes mini-cd makes me feel like i'm on the run from dr. no. i just don't see gizmowhatsits like that out here in brooklyn. thanks man, just judging by the scope alone i can see that this was well worth any nominal wait.

Hey y'all,
I'm really sorry, but somehow, these past four months just flew by. On the bright side, in that time, I found a decent job, took up yoga, and started playing music again. And in the shuffle, I totally flaked the hell out on this mix thing. To the members of my group... you have my address, so thank you for not sending me hate mail. And your mix is finally in on its way, with my humble apologies.
If all you want to do is put the thing on your iPod, it's right here as well:
