as i said on the last one, i don't think anyone should worry about familiar tracks. it's just as fun to hear how it was pieced together.

are we saying that mixes arrive on sept 22? whatever it is, i'm in.

I suppose I am. let's say final day for signing up is September 10th, and everyone should try to mail their mixes out by the 22nd. I'll figure out how many mixes/posters are in each group depending on how many people sign up. I'm going to assume everyone is making CDRs, but if you can only make cassettes, say so and I'll see who among us wouldn't mind getting a cassette mix in lieu of a CDR one.

I don't think anyone here would do this, but I'd like to ask that noone put any unsigned bands on their mixes (unless they really really rock, and I mean rock). I don't know about you guys, but I just don't really care about someone else's local scene. On a previous mixtrade I was in, some dude sent in a mix of all unsigned local bands, which wasn't necessarily bad music, it just didn't do anything for me.

Miss Tasty Princess
08-04-2005, 12:55 AM
Hopefully you didn't mean for that to sound as condescending as it did.

johansen smith
08-04-2005, 01:08 AM
Winterversion, would you like a copy of my Maloze's Greatest Hits Sampler CD-R?

tinobeat
08-04-2005, 01:36 AM
honestly, the Headband track I put on my last mix is one of the best songs I put on there. The fact that they're a Boston band who's just been releasing CDRs for the past few years didn't come into play at all. It just worked.

There may be a number of "unsigned" bands on my mix. I happen to love a lot of bands that don't get any exposure outside of town.

johansen smith
08-04-2005, 01:47 AM
I already have my 2 disc mix ready for this trade, and it contains no unsigned or local artists, for what it's worth. that where I live has one of the worst local scenes in the country probably has something to do with it though.

winterversion
08-04-2005, 02:45 AM
Did that really come off as condescending? I really don't want to sound elitist or anything, but c'mon, a whole 75 minutes of unsigned local bands? I guess the choice of bands for that particular mix wasn't so good, but I remember feeling pretty disappointed. I guess I don't mind if there's a few unsigned bands here and there that really stand out, but as a general rule, I think it's in bad taste to send an entire mix of them. I guess it's because part of the reason I do these mixtrades is to broaden my knowledge of music that's somewhat "on the map."

But, to give you a better sense of what I'm talking about, the particular bands were from the Boston area, I believe, from a podcast called "Accident Hash":

Bands:
Chance
Berman
Climb
Estrela
Erica Cashman
The Mung Brothers
HollEr
Jonathan Coulton
Manda and the Marbles
Maxtone Four
Mike Chappelear
De La Vega
Tourist
Taxi Doll
Ulysses
Uncrowned
Vincent Van Go Go

Anyone happen to know any of these bands? Tino, perhaps?

johansen smith
08-04-2005, 02:56 AM
Vincent Van Go Go is a funny band name.
I didn't think you were condescending. I got a mix once that was all artists from Sweden and i thought that was a great treat because I'd truly never be exposed to this otherwise, so something like that is pretty choice.

winterversion
08-04-2005, 03:03 AM
See, I would have loved a swedish bands mix. I think Sweden's pumping out some of the coolest music right now. Ever go to swedesplease? It's an all swedes band weblog. I check it out every week - highly recommended.

vesper

unless there are two bands called Ulysses, that's a signed band. i think it's even robert schneider of apples in stereo/elephant 6 fame!

Paul

Manda and the Marbles aren't exactly a non-entity either, fwiw.

can we have it so there are no repeats from the last round? i really dug every mix i got last time, but new blood might be good.

Thor
08-06-2005, 06:59 PM
I'm certainly in..

I couldn't care less whether a band is signed or not as long as it's good.. good music is good music.. whether it's an unsigned demo from Samoa or a successful L.A band signed to EMI...(admittedly an entire mix of unsigned is a bit odd)..

The last mix trade I made here started off with an unsigned local band called Colditz Glider.. I think it was an awesome track, too... and from memory others did aswell.

That said I doubt my mix will have any unsigned bands.

earl grey
08-06-2005, 07:10 PM

Thor
08-06-2005, 07:15 PM
My last mix wasn't specifically themed.. just what I deemed to be cool shit that fit together well.. I think this time I'm gonna make a theme...

I wanted to make a blues mix but I dunno if anyone's in the mood for it at the moment(?)... but I have a lot of other ideas... I love this shit.

Elijah
08-07-2005, 01:43 AM
I may as well just say for the record that I don't care what people put on their mixes. I do mix trades because they involve a bunch of other people who ostensibly have great taste, and who know about a lot of music I've never heard of. So if someone here wants to send me The Best of the Lousiville Scene 1975-2005--because that's what they're feeling at the moment--go ahead, knock yourself out. I would, however, like it to rock.

Oh, and I totally don't mind if I'm in Tino's group again. His mix was frikkin' awesome.

Oh, and I totally don't mind if I'm in Tino's group again. His mix was frikkin' awesome.

That was a ridiculously good mix. All the mixes I received were great, and have proved interesting to the present day. Pretty different and very revelatory in the way of artists previously unfamiliar to me (my mix probably wasn't super enlightening, but I stand by it), great fodder for my radio show...

Tino, I have been wondering, where did you get that Dan Melchior's Broke Revue tune? That song blew me away from the first listen, just wasn't sure where you got it. Also, where's the best place to start with that group recording-wise?

Salman

and i also don't have a problem with getting repeat mixes. i think i was turned on to something by everyone.

not only that, but several of my friends have a copy of your mix and really dig it. Colditz Glider are great... I keep missing their recent gigs, but I was fortunate enough to see their first few gigs in tiny pubs last year and they were *so* fucking tight.

Thanks duders! I had a lot of fun puttin the whole thing together...

That Dan Melchior tune is one of three songs I have from his been-done-for-ages-but-never-released album called Oh Clouds Unfold. I really wanna get my hands on the rest of it, as its been circulating among some folks I know. But yeah, that song is kinda like nothing I've heard by him. I have Bitterness Spite Rage... and Heavy Dirt, and they're both realy gritty blooze garage stuff. First class albums, both of them. The songs I've heard from Oh Clouds Unfold are a lot mellower and more intricate, but the noisy shit he was doing before is fantastic.

Okay, I will be e-mailing everyone their group's address/contact info later this afternoon, but these are the preliminary groups. two groups of five people and one group of six. the two groups of five people all have at least one mix with a "foreign" destination, so keep that in mind. I went ahead and made the group with 6 people my group, so apologies to the random people who were assigned my group. I'm making this list public so if a month down the line, you hear how great so-and-so's mix was, you know who you can try to PM and weasel a copy out of. the groups:

Hello everyone,

I'd like to send out a humble apology to those of you who are expecting a mix from me. All I can say is that the stress of moving and looking for a job these past three months (and working two low-paying grunt jobs in the mean time to pay the bills) has left me with little time to put together a proper mix. I do promise that I will put something together soon, and that it will be worth the wait. I hope that's OK.

cool - glad you dig it! that le mans song is from their album 'aqui vivia yo,' which is the only thing i know by them. but it's all in that vein - great album.

'black forest' is excellent too, likely a top 10 record for me this year. the a-frames tune on the optimo mix is from an older album of theirs, which i'm curious to hear the rest of.

I still should have everyone's addresses from the first round in my PM Inbox, say yay in this thread if you wish to be included. if you have a new address or are new to the process, PM your address as well.

I will do my best to not repeat any boarders from the first two mixes but it's very likely you might have at least one familiar face in your group just because I don't remember who went to who both times.

i'm totally guilty of mixsprawl, but yeah 12 tracks is way harder than it sounds ... usually i have too many songs i can't bear to leave off. (my mixes tend to be around 15-17 tracks, i've found ... usually a few longer tracks mixed in.)

I will try to not match people up with people they've already had, but no promises and so you will probably get at least one person you've had, but at least your mixes will be able to make non-awkward small talk.

remember, if you wanted to hear a certain poster's mix, you can always PM them and try to work out a trade on your own terms.

if you're shipping a mix off to people overseas, remember to check "gift" and a low amount for what it's worth so the recepient doesn't have to pay to get it from their post office.

I'll post the tracklisting for mine once I get the nod that they've started to arrive - it's possible they'll drop Thurs or Fri.

yeah I'm pysched. just finished--it's a bit over inflated and maybe just a hint of too much familiarity--but your grandparents are gonna be sore. Nautically ominous---will be in mail by next Friday.

My tracks are ready to burn. No crossfading available. I just can't justify spending the money for a user-friendly program (that works).

In any case, I like this mix better than my last one. Last year I made the mistake of anticipating what others wanted to hear instead of including tracks *I* really loved.

You're welcome - figured Matador-approved stickers would provide a distraction if you thought the thing stank!

yah I love it, especially since it's full of music from a genre I'm not that well versed in. the flow is excellent and it relaxed me so much on lunch that I took a long lunch to listen to more of it!

I can't see this post over the curl of jet-black hair I've carefully hairsprayed over my left eye.

My friend Sara will drink it through a straw. I tried it that way once and it was tolerable at least.

well, in Ireland something's different, cos I can drink a 3-4 of them here and be relatively sober, while when I was in Ireland I had 2 and staggered out of the pub. and they tasted better there.

Johansen, haha, yeah, its just that my scruples caught up to me and I realized that there's really no excuse to mock or congratulate anyone on their drinking or non-drinking habits, so I decided to withdraw on account of taste. There's plenty of other things I can rib you about in a friendly manner.

Guinness is served too cold in the States. It's not MGD for crying out loud.

Depends on where it's brewed. The highest strength is export, plus the stuff produced in Nigeria - 7% abv.
For a while here we had choice between regular old Guinness and extra-cold on draught, but that's gone. It's somewhere in between now. Cold Guinness just masks a bad pint.
I had the opportunity to sample Brew 39 over the weekend. Hang on, isn't this the wrong thread?!
Report on B39 to follow in the appropriate location.

A little mix cd supplies oasis called Office Depot.

PS, one of the songs on the mix is actually only an excerpt that I thought was the complete song until I heard the whole thing on the radio today (I had originally downloaded it from somewhere). Can you guess which one?

mixes were physically dropped in a mailbox this afternoon. by the way, the quote on the CDR is something I overheard at the last show I went to, and it probably loses a lot in translation, but it was impossibly funny to hear one bearded indie dude try to impress another with like the weirdest lie ever.

i just got 9000's in the mail and the track list is looking très chic. at once, i apologize and am thankful for getting started on my mix late (i'm working on it now!): i had actually marked two songs that 9000 already has as workable tracks on my mix. i think i'll go get some coffee so that i can listen to it in the car!

-edit-

and 9000's mix is great! i keep forgetting how much i like the a-frames until i actually list to them. and that tuxedomoon song is so good...i think i know it from somewhere else.
