I owe my introduction to Matador records and the concept of independant music itself to my purchase of the Kids in the Hall soundtrack in 9th grade.

Seconded!!
Thirded.
Also, Trainspotting and Snatch. Oh yeah, and Magnolia (cuz I'm a sucker for Aimee Mann).
Not really scores as much as soundtracks but...
This Is Spinal Tap One of the most important films of all time.
A Mighty Wind Maybe not as obvoius as some of their other flicks, but these guys go deep. Amazing record that really supports an amazing film.
Bedazzled Peter Cook, Dudley Moore flick. Did this ever come out on CD?
Decline Of Western Civilization A must for those times when you hate cops to the max (Mr. HCI & his ticket for example.)
Fugazi Instrument
I'm sure there's more, but that was all that would escape my head at the moment.

Bedazzled Peter Cook, Dudley Moore flick. Did this ever come out on CD?The movie's not even available on DVD, so I'll bet it didn't. Kim Salmon & The Business did a nice cover of "Love Me" as a b-side, BTW.

I think the only movie soundtrack that I actually own is the Singles soundtrack (for the Westerberg tracks, natch-- "Waiting For Somebody" is one of my favorite songs of his). Obviously, I would dig any CD from movies like Spinal Tap or A Mighty Wind (which we do have on DVD), or even High Fidelity for that matter (I think there's a Smog song on that one?).
I've got a copy of Decline Of Western Civilization on VHS, and even though I've never bought the actual soundtrack album, I can vouch for how awesome the Black Flag tracks are.
Robert Rodriguez' band, Chingon, has some songs on the soundtracks to Once Upon A Time In Mexico and Kill Bill II that I think are really friggin' good.

some of these are less soundtracks and more original cast recordings.

well, Hedwig, A Mighty Wind, and This is Spinal Tap...
It's not the same as a Broadway show, but I see your point. Still using that term doesn't sit right with me.
Which also made me realize that I forgot about one of the all time greatest soundtracks to one of my all time favorite movies:
Hairspray If there is one (and I'll bet there is or will be) I have no interest in the Original Cast Recording.
Also the Soundtrack to A Dirty Shame is pretty essential (and the movie is great too) The most consistant John Waters Soundtrack since Hairspray.

Agreed on the genius of Guest and Co.
Unfortunately the LP soundtrack of 'Decline' did not include X's stunning rendition of "Nausea" in the film. Maybe it made it on to the CD?
The soundtrack is very patchy - whether on film or record.

The Big Lebowski soundtrack is killer. As are Oh Brother Where Art Thou and The Ladykillers.

I just happened upon my Morvern Callar CD. I totally dig this soundtrack--especially how it jives with the movie's plot. Have any of you seen the movie? So fucked up, but in a good way IMO.

I saw it about a year ago, I really liked the beginning, but it kind of dragged on after that, and that chick kind of annoys me, I think its her forehead or something, ever since Minority Report. eeeeeesssh!

Agreed--maybe it did drag some towards the end. But we'll have to agree to disagree on Samantha Morton ("that chick"). I have a big, phat crush on her. Did you see her in Sweet and Lowdown? Another satisfying soundtrack as well...

Dead Presidents - I still haven't bothered seeing the film, but the soundtrack is one of the greatest R&B/Soul mixes ever.

If I'm thinking of the right flick, all I remember about it is it being extremely violent.
My favourite soundtrack, hands down, is Magnolia. Although Transformers: The Movie is a sentimental favourite.

as weird as it may sound, Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's original soundtrack to She's the One is pretty good if you like 80s-period Petty. Petty covering Beck's "Asshole" is worth picking it up alone.

I can't explain why, but the Oh Brother... soundtrack gives me nightmares, as does the movie and any other film portraying the South during that period. Again, I cannot explain why.
Edited for grammar or something.

I really like the soundtrack to Dune as performed by the rock 'n' roll combo Toto. Seriously. There's a track on it called "Big Battle" which plays in my head pretty much every day.

White Guilt?
Not necessarily. Masterful Southern Gothic tales tend to provoke such a reaction, for lots of complex and different reasons.

Does Urgh! A Music War count as a soundtrack?
I saw Broken Flowers last week and I want to pick that soundtrack up
Also any random Bernard Herrmann score is worth picking up

Ya know, I had a song from that soundtrack (which I don't even own) in my head the other day. The one that goes: "Cause you got a heart so big / it could crush this town / But I can't hold out forever / Even walls fall down." That one. Whatever it's called.
Anyhoo, it was just strange to me that this song I hadn't heard in (eight?) years was all of a sudden bouncing around my brain. Now that I know that the soundtrack has "Asshole" on it, I'm going to add it to my wish list! Thanks, J.S.!
