I'm off to Philadelphia this weekend for a conference. Any suggestions for hip places to see. I'd love to check out some good record shops.

Ditto. Same conference perhaps? Looking for good eats and a place to get a solid drink.

Awesome! Another sociologist on the forum. Yeah I'm presenting, just a roundtable though. It's Monday at 8:30 at the "Cultural Potpourri" roundtable. Our paper's called "Sounds like Sociology: A Treatise on the Sociology of Sound." Drop by if you get a chance. I'm sure we could use your help.

Oh, I forgot to ask if you were presenting. I'll try to make it if you are.

You're off the hook--I'm not presenting this year. I'll try to make it to your roundtable though. 8:30am. Ouch!

Do you do soc of music, or something like that?

Hey guys, I live just outside of Philly. If you'd like, email at icantbelieveipostedmyemailonapublicboard@whatadumb ass.com to give me a better idea of what you're looking to do during downtime. As for myself, I hope to be here: http://www.northstarbar.com/ (http://) seeing Smog and my friend's band called Be Careful Little Hands on Saturday night. The band room is separate from the rest of the bar, which is a nice little place to hang out in itself. I can recommend several other places as well, though.

PS - AKA Music is worth checking out. The address listing is 27 N. 2nd St., but they've recently moved down the block so this might not be accurate. Either way, they're on 2nd St. just north of Market St.

Also, if you have a car and the time, I suggest you take a 1/2 hour drive on either Saturday or Sunday morning to the New Castle Flea Market in Delaware. Just take I95 South to Rt. 13 South, and it's a few miles down. You can't miss it. Potentially EXCELLENT vinyl scores to be had there. And if not, you get a good taste of the New Castle native culture which is a treasure trove all its own.

apeshite: Don't feel obligated at all to see the talk. 8:30 in the morning is a doozy. You won't hurt my feelings if you don't come.

Sarah: That smog show sounds awesome. I'll try to make it to that if cirumstances permit. I am driving up there, so I am mobile, I'm just worried about hotel parking, which is usually like $20. Thanks for the record store and flea market info. I'm hoping to pick up some nice records while I'm there.

Cheesesteaks: Pat's (King of Steaks) -- 9th and Passyunk (S. Philly).

Japanese/Fusion: Morimoto's (Iron Chef Guy) -- 7th and Chestnut (I think).

Bars: Chris's Jazz Cafe in Society Hill. My wife liked the Continental near Penn's Landing. Nodding Head is a dive/brew pub with a decent classic rock/alternative juke box.

Thanks for all the Philly suggestions, guys. Mmm...cheesesteaks.

winterversion: if I don't make it to your roundtable, good luck!

Whenever I go to Nodding Head, I love to order a beer called Golden Monkey Knife Fight. It's tasty and fun to say!

I whole-heartedly agree. Another great Belgian-style pub in Philly is Eulogy. It's between 1st and 2nd on Chestnut. Mussels, fries and beer may be the greatest meal ever.

Also, Pat's and Gino's are good, but if you don't feel like venturing that far south, go to Jim's on 5th and South.
