Grayson Capps – Thursday, September 8 at 6PM

Laura Cantrell – Thursday, September 8 at 6:30PM

Here’s a killer double bill to kick of AMA Conference Week. Grayson Capps is a southern troubadour in the Townes Van Zandt tradition with a whiskey-soaked voice and comparisons to Tom Waits and J.J. Cale. He’ll kick things off at 6PM and will be followed by an exclusive performance by Laura Cantrell, one of the original Americana divas. Her debut album, Not The Tremblin’ Kind, was hailed legendary British DJ John Peel as “my favorite record of the last 10 years and, possibly, my life.” Not to be outdone, her latest release on Matador, Humming By The Flowered Vine, is an exquisite and sublime collection of arcane, literate, and lovely cover songs. This in-store performance will be Laura’s ONLY performance during the Americana Music Conference. We’ll have some frothy adult beverages on hand and this will be THE party to kick off the extended AMA weekend so join us for this intimate double bill.

Oh no! It's what I always feared. Laura's become a diva.

A friend tells me Laura did six songs at this, and ' she was backed by a great band: Paul Burch on guitar, Fats Kaplin on fiddle/mandolin and a bass player whose name I forget.'

A recording is on the way so I'll tell more when I get it.

Dispatches from the Americana conference

• Maybe one of the coolest shows during last week’s Americana Music Association conference wasn’t at a club, but at Grimey’s Records, when NYC country singer Laura Cantrell returned to her hometown for an in-store last Thursday backed by guitarist Paul Burch, bassist Lorne Rall and multi-instrumentalist Fats Kaplin. As one person there put it, the audience was “more of a Nashville crowd than an AMA crowd.” Sure, there were a couple of people in regulation Americana wear—jeans, Western shirt, all-important laminated badge—but the rest of the folks looked like, well, just folks. Cantrell played songs off her third album Humming By the Flowered Vine, which came out on Matador Records earlier this year (putting her in the company of other so-called Americana acts like Cat Power and Interpol), and it was a lovely, if too brief set. Grimey’s is a fine place to hear music—smoke-free, you’re outta there well before 10—so long as you don’t mind craning to see around store displays and other customers. But it was hard not to wonder why Cantrell didn’t play a regular club gig last weekend. Turns out she had to leave for a string of U.K. dates, but the word is that she’ll be back again in November.

A recording of this has just reached me and charming it is. Laura riffs away with her hometown folk . A babys cry is commented as being 'that's
Abraham Marks y'all - and he's wearing his first western shirt and I bought it!'. The fiddle/mandolin really add to the songs . They cover Hank Snow's The Gold Rush Is Over , an 'old Hillbilly song we just about know'. Old Downtown is sung with a slight laugh at the end of some of the lines , Laura possibly picking up on some knowing nods from audience members. The start of that song emphaises the comfortable nature of the performance. After two false starts Laura says ' You know what - I'm just going to start this song' and does and the musicians just have to get in line....and do!

The songs performed

Poor Ellen Smith
Letters
Khaki and Courduroy
California Rose
The Gold Rush Is Over
Old Downtown

The recorder has apologised to me for a coughing fit he - audibly - has during 'Khacki..' ; I think it just adds to the whole feel of it.
