I love Cat Power.

I thought it might be cool to thread other bands / music that BB users are into and that CP fans might need to check out.

P.S. in advance, if the bands people list seem like obvious choices, don't knock them. Good music is what it is.

My list:

Sleater-Kinney "One Beat"
Joni Mitchell "For the Roses"
Neil Young "After the Gold Rush"
Sarah Dougher "Day One"
Beth Orton "daybreaker"
Bebel Gilberto "tanto tempo"
Tuck & Patti
Patricia Barber

there are so many others, but these artists evoke great emotional response from me when I listen to them.

What are you into?

The 2 albums that have come out in the last few years that come close to the cat power standard for me are

Nina Nastasia - the blackened air

Thalis Zadek - Been here Now Gone

Both have amazingly emotive voices and beautiful songs.

I just found out about a lady, her voice is very beautiful and so is her music, check her out, but be careful, not all her albums are as nice as this one:

Edith Frost/Calling over time (produced by Jim O'Rourke)

The other ones are more pop.

Enjoy...

Scout Niblett and Mirah are great if you're looking for something that's similar to Cat Power.

they were never pretty cool.

I agree that Weezer's lackluster now, but at their peak they were unquestionably one of the coolest and most brilliant rock bands of all time.

Don't know if this has been posted before (apologies if it has):

As for bands Cat Power fans might like:

Tindersticks
Belle and Sebastian
Dirty Three
Smog (of course) - especially his older stuff
Will Oldham/Palace Brothers/Bonnie Billy
Sleater-Kinney

Hello from Tokyo, newbie here.

I always wanted Chan to cover Brigitte Fontaine or Nico, also Marianne Faithful (esp. "Sister Morphine"). they all have unique yet sensual voice.

If anyone interesed in Japanese female ssw, I recommend:

Sai Yoshiko
Kanenobu Sachiko(who lives in San Francisco so far)
Morita Douji

I read somewhere once that they are Jim O'rouke's favorite.

Tim Prudhomme's solo record on Smells Like, released like a year ago, was brilliant. And it still is.

I'm really, really surprised that no one has mentioned Lisa Germano..
She's the artist I know who come the closest to Chans musical beauty.
Those of you who haven't heard Germano, do yourself a favour and check out her albums:

Lullaby for liquid pig
Slide
Excerpts from a love circus
Geek the girl
Happiness
On the way down from the moon palace

A duet between Lisa & Chan would be just lovely .... with Kristin Hersh, PJ Harvey and Tori Amos as backgroundsingers!

I think Nick Cave would be an interesting duet-partner for Chan as well..

but u know this Marshall/Amos duet is completely impossible, right? I mean, it's weird to even put both names in the same sentence.

people knock them, but i love the vines. their music is so amazing, craig has the best screaming voice, and the slow songs are just amazing, the whole highly evolved album is. people judge them as one of the 'THE' bands, but they're not, their music is ace and its deep too.

Hello.

As far as groups with female vocalists, theres a band I've been listening to a lot lately called Loquat. Their singer, Kylee, reminds me a lot of Harriet Wheeler from the Sundays. Sadly, they seem a bit mired in obscurity as far as the indie world goes, but hopefully their next release will get some attention.

They have a few songs at their site if anyone would like to check them out. Loquat (http://www.loquatmusic.com/)

okay, there's been some damned fine suggestions so far.
i have some older and newer names.

Love-brilliant band, beautiful melodies and very original lyrics.
Spirit- always recommended. variety of musical styles, strong lyrics, nice melodies
(also where jimmy page got the intro for "stairway to heaven")
Tim Buckley (Happy Sad, Hello and Goodbye)
Nina Simone- she was an amazing singer/interpreter, and a great influence on many (jeff buckley, rickie lee jones to name just two)

Opal (before Mazzy Star, Roback's band with Kendra Smith)
Doves (Lost Souls, Last Broadcast)
Alejandro Escovedo- among the finest songwriters and voices in the country, i pray for him to recover soon.

Love Spirals Downward
Astrud Gilberto- mother of Bebel. allowed me to enjoy basso nova and samba.

Hope Sandoval- solo cd "Bavarian Fruit Bread"

p.s. bob schneider sucks. he is ruining Antone's, a once proud and great Blues venue in Austin, TX

well for the slow melancholy stuff, and/or the folky side to things:

nick drake
incredible string band
steeleye span

but mary timony and belle and sebastian are good bets too

also: so happy to see Neko Case and Carolyn Mark on someone's list. Carolyn Mark rocks, but you'll have to be ready for a little alt country if you go that route.

to be quite honest here, half of these artisit/bands listed i've never heard of before, and maybe a quarter of them, i just know by name...
becoming a cat power fan was pure chance...
i'm not really into any of the new stuff out today...and as close as i was coming to cat power before i found her, was bob dylan...
i'm more into classic rock than anything else...
but if you like cat power A LOT, there's a very good chance you'll like bob dylan and possibly lou reed's early stuff
that's about all i can say

First off, welcome Sashja.
As a huge Dylan fan, I am always glad to see his name mentioned as someone for others to try out. I have to say to also check out the amazing Joni Mitchell. She is, to me, among the most brilliant and significant songwriters AND musicians of our time. Very few singers/bands/writers take as many chances to fully venture into so many areas of their art as she has. Listen to "Ladies of the Canyon" then to "Hissing of Summer Lawns" or "Hejira".
Also, I think that Tim Hardin is someone who needs to get more recognition and mention. He also wrote very personal and soul-shaking songs similar to Chan's in an unapologetic way. He wrote "Lady From Baltimore" about the wealthy young woman who he fell in love with him, and he with her, but was unable to stick it out due to her family's disapproval and Hardin's drug use. He also wrote "Reason To Believe" and "Eulogy for Lenny Bruce".

Nico's first album is one I believe many Cat Power fans can get into, especially those who enjoy the "Cover's Record". The chamber style arrangements John Cale used on Nico's "Chelsea Girl" are similar in their simplicity and spare instrumentation on many tracks. Check out the title song, "Winter Song", "Wrap You Troubles in Dreams", and especially her version of Hardin's "Eulogy for Lenny Bruce". Some chilling stuff, for sure.

"Please do not confront me with my failures. I have not forgotten them."
