They're definitely not in the, say, top 25 bands most raved about here, but I think there's a good number of appreciators.

I really only like Dear catastrophe waitress

I really only like Tigermilk and Sinister as far as albums go. The singles/b-sides are where the band buries their best work, no question.

hey Lukas, I think Dear Catastophe Waitress is their best work also. I also think Camera Obscura is better than Belle and Sebstian. but I still actually like Belle and Sebastian.

camera obscura are a good band, but come on now.

i still cling to 'sinister' and 'tigermilk' as my top 2 but 'DCW' is my #3 with B+S, and it gets bonus points for restoring my faith in the band after 'fold your hands child.'

Tigermilk and Sinister are the only two I can bear to listen to from start to finish, too much cringe-inducing pap on the rest.

Edit: This was a bit meaner than I meant. I'm a bit grumpy cos my laptop croaked and I haven't had any breakfast. Grrr.
Safe to say these two are my favourites, with the remainder less consistent. Politeness and civility return.

no one has any love for boy with arab strap

but i think we're all at a consensus, Tigermilk and Sinsiter are phenomenal records

I like Camera Obscura better too.
Belle and Sebastien are pretty hit and miss with me, but when they hit it's usually amazing.

I do! I do!

Along with the Just a Modern Rock Song ep, Arab Strap was the first B & S I ever heard. I was introduced to it in high school by a foreign exchange Frenchgirl. I still think the album contains some of their best stuff.

On the other hand, I've never been able to really get into Sinister--excluding Storytelling, it may be my least favorite, shocking as that statement is.

Fold Your Hands Child has more than its fair share of clunkers, it's true, but Don't Leave The Light On and I Fought In A War are pretty damn high for high points. Sinister, on the other hand, is really consistent-consistently mediocre to these ears.

And while Dear Catastrophe Waitress is really good when it's good, its clunkers (the Godspell-style song with the finger-snapping, and the track by the girl who isn't Isobel) may be my least favorite B & S ever.

The only lps I really enjoy all the way through are Tigermilk and Boy With the Arab Strap.

even though i only really love tigermilk, i would say belle & sebastian is one of my favorites. like someone else said, when they're on, they're on.

also, a new song called "another sunny day" has been posted here (http://youaintnopicasso.blogspot.com). it's very nice.

Oddly enough, the new album will be on Matador in the US. From their website:

It's been widely reported and everybody probably knows anyway, but for those who haven't noticed, we have a new album out on February 6th. It's called "The Life Pursuit" and it has 13 songs on it.

Like "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" it'll be released by Rough Trade Records in UK and Europe, Toshiba in Japan, Spunk in Australia etc etc. Interestingly though, "The Life Pursuit" marks the return of B&S to Matador Records for North and Central America. Matador, of course, released all B&S records from "If You're Feeling To Sinister" to "Storytelling" (and "Push Barman..."), before the band signed to Rough Trade. We missed each other though and have decided to come together once more.

So they'll be releasing "The Life Pursuit" on Feb 7th.

"The Life Pursuit", released in the UK/Europe on Feb 6th by Rough Trade Records. Released a day later in the US by our old muckers at Matador Records. Spunk will be fulfilling Australasian duties as usual, with Trama covering Brazil and Toshiba in Japan.

The album tracklisting goes a little something like this:

Act Of The Apostle Part 1
Another Sunny Day
White Collar Boy
The Blues Are Still Blue
Dress Up In You
Sukie In The Graveyard
We Are The Sleepyheads
Song For Sunshine
Funny Little Frog
To Be Myself Completely
Act Of The Apostle Part 2
For The Price Of A Cup Of A Tea
Mornington Crescent

The album will be preceded by a single, "Funny Little Frog", on January 16th. Will it be released in a multitude of bizarre formats? Who knows?

Is it safe to assume Matador will be releasing the single, too?

Did Matador release any of the EPs in the past? I think that everything I've got from the pre-Waitress era is a Jeepster release. I know Rough Trade released all the Waitress singles domestically.

Matador didn't originally release the first four EPs (although the first three were later reissued as a box), but they did release "Legal Man", "Jonathan David" and "I'm Waking Up To Us". The only B&S release to never get a US release is "This Is Just A Modern Rock Song" (of course, all the tracks from it are now on "Push Barman...")

two other interesting bits from the B+S email:

A US tour will be announced shortly. Then Europe. Then maybe Japan and Australia. Ah, the promotional merry-go-round.

Cryptic last bit: There will actually be another B&S album (of sorts) released before "The Life Pursuit". In three weeks in fact. But we can't say what it is for a couple of days.

will be interesting to see what this upcoming "album" is.

There's some speculation about that at http://www.bowlie.org/forum/showthread.php?t=21925&page=7. They're doing a "LateNightTales" with a new song in Feburary, but band management confirms that's not it, so I'm thinking it's their children's charity comp (more on that at http://www.bowlie.org/forum/showthread.php?t=20187)

The album, the single (which I guess I'll have to import), LateNightTales, the children's thing, it'll be an expensive next few months for the B&S obsessive...

We have our answer:

The "surprise" album, alluded to in our previous mail, is "If You're Feeling Sinister: Live At The Barbican". This download-only album, which pisses all over any bit torrents you may have heard, will be available exclusively from iTunes on December 6th. As a further incentive to follow the path of righteousness, all proceeds will be donated to the DEC's Asia Quake Appeal.

I'm anxiously awaiting the release of this record in Feb. I'd rather wait for the proper release date versus cheating and downloading early!!!
This is going to be sooooooooo good!!!!

Which will make it the first B&S single since "This Is Just A Modern Rock Song" not to get a US release. Ahh well, what was the Internet invented for if not for importing singles?

While Matador will not be releasing the single, Matador Direct is going to try to buy some from Rough Trade for sale to the stores that buy directly from us so hopefully the single will get to lots of cool store (and cool online stores as well) at a better price.

Back to when everyone was debating top albums. Sinister is my favorite full-length, but This is Just a Modern Rock Song is an amazing EP. I love the title track, I can't stop listening to it on repeat. And I can't wait till Feb 7. The album is going to be AMAZING!

Rough Trade have put back the release date of The Life Pursuit over here. According to Vital, the distributors, there have been problems with the pressing. Looks like being Feb 20th at the earliest :(

Hell this site is slow today.

I really like Camara Obscula but there's no way their better then Belle & Sebastion. I think the last B&S record was their most deverse in the sense of infernces. But Tiger Milk and If your Feeling... remain the bands best work. But at the end of the day the band have yet to do a bad record and will always be a great live force. And when the signed a four album record deal with Rough Trade they just entered another uniqe part of their careers. B&S are timeless found that out after putting tigemilk on last night.
