I don't know how to put this, because you're a great bunch of guys, and the level of musical - and non-musical cultural exchange - on this board is phenomenal.

That said this is a Matador Records bulletin board and our chief responsibility is to our artists and our music.

We've been particularly disappointed in the response - POSITIVE or NEGATIVE - to recent MP3s, videos and other news posted on this site relating to upcoming releases. While we, like you, enjoy lots of non-Matador music, and enjoy reading about it here, that's not the primary purpose of this site. Certain Matador artists - I'm sure I don't have to name names - enjoy heavy exposure here. Others who don't have that kind of profile don't. While it's may seem easy to consign those artists to "fringe artists" who don't deserve or won't get that kind of support, we really don't think that way. If there's any support those bands and singer-songwriters are gonna get anywhere, it's gonna start here. And we rely on you guy to be the pioneers - once again, negative, or positive. Truth can hurt, but it's still worthwhile... this is not a hype site, and I don't think most of you have ever seen it that way.

We've always hoped that the Matador BB would be one of the major ways that our new artists would get introduced to the world. To see them getting, essentially, ignored, in favor of other artists on other labels is, well, fair enough. But please give us the benefit of your opinion. I think the bands would appreciate too.

For this reason we're shutting down the General Topics page (sadly, because I love it) for a certain period of time. We expect a lot of you to take off for a while, perhaps permanently. But I hope some of you will stick around and post about our upcoming releases, both unknown and well known.

And we'll bring General Topics back. There was just precious literal Matador about it in the last 6 months.
