In my account of Laura's show in Dublin in September I noted -

' There are tentative plans for more Irish shows in December , dependant on finalising of taking part in the filming of a TV show here. This would be the 'Other Voices' series , a Irish TV production, usually filmed in the 200-year-old St James' Church in Dingle, Co Kerry.

The Fourth Series of Other Voices, Songs from a Room, will be filmed for RTE Television in Dingle, County Kerry from December 9th through the 16th.

Over the last three years over 80 musical acts have gathered in the most westerly point of Europe and performed before an audience of only 70 people in the 200 year old St James' Church in Dingle, County Kerry. In a region steeped in tradition that has long attracted musicians and artists from different disciplines, cutting-edge artists have gathered at the most westerly point of Europe and created an exciting mix of modern sounds and new voices.

Building on the success of the past three years, this December from the 9th until the 16th, we're doing it all again as musicians from various backgrounds and traditions travel to Dingle, County Kerry to celebrate the sounds and styles of Irish music and voices. Presented again this year by John Kelly, the shows will feature performances by The Waterboys, James Blunt, Horslips, and many others.

Other Voices, Songs from a Room will bring together, in one town and in one venue an unmissable opportunity to witness the developing sound of Irish music as it echoes out from the west of Ireland.

I don't think having tickets for Robert Plant would stop me going to see Laura. You're just not devoted enough, John.

I guess that'll be Laura and Mark Spenser , just like the Peel gig in London.

Feck - I wish I was there! Besides the Plant gig in Dublin, I will have been in London from Tues to Thurs , so I'll have work to catch up with etc.

No info. about this has reached me yet. The weekly newspapers from Kerry reach Dublin tomorrow ( if the pony 'n trap can get through the mountain passes) so I'll have a look and let you know if anything appears.

By the way , the Plant gig was shite , barely competent musicians doing abysmal 'Zep covers really.

By the way , here's what the show's site says about Laura -

John Kelly , Other Voices presenter , spoke on his radio show last night about Laura in Kerry. After playing 'Letters' he mentioned how Laura had given up her day job since he had last met her ( May '03 when she played some dates in Ireland and co-presented his show) . He also said that it was kind of a result of his , Kelly's , radio show. Elvis Costello had guested on the show in 2002 , he -Kelly - had given Elvis a copy of Laura's disc ( or maybe it was the other way around - John couldn't remember ) , Elvis invited Laura to open for him on his late '02 U.S. tour and that , ultimately , persuaded Laura to become a full-time musician.

Technically , that is a correct seqence of events. However I reckon Laura was , in her own sweet way , exaggerating things for John's benefit. Other accounts tell of Elvis being introduced to Laura's music by - who else?!?!- John Peel , when they met backstage at the Meltdown Festival in London in the summer of 2001. Elvis namechecked Laura in a interview with a Dublin magazine later that year and so on. That tends to make it more likely that it was Elvis telling Kelly about Laura in '02.

When I spoke to Laura in Kilkenny - and Dublin - in May '03 we spoke about her having packed in the day-job. I had read about it somewhere so it was known at that point. I missed her appearance on Kelly's that time ( put a tape in the machine before the evening show started , went out to a prior engagement and returned to find that I had set the sound level at zero!) so , it seems , it wasn't discussed or Kelly forgot .

Last night's show can be heard again - until tonight's at 8.30PM , Irish time - at

'Letters' and the comments happen about 20 minutes in.

Laura appears in the second segment of the show. John Kelly does an intro. piece ( usual spiel, Nashville via New York, bank etc.) , walking in the streets of Dingle in the rain, finishing as he arrives at An Cafe Liteartha , a cafe/bookshop. The scene changes to the stage in the church and we see Laura and Mark Spencer, playing acoustic guitars, perform California Rose. Both in dark clothes , facing packed , darkened pews . Back to the bookshop and John and Laura talk about giving up the bank job, touring with Elvis Costello etc. Laura then sings , with acoustic guitar accompaniment, The Singing Waterfall ( written by Hank Williams in the 1940's, recorded then by Molly O'Day) , sitting with the bookshelves around her. A bit more chat about her Nashville credentials and then back to the church stage for Two Seconds.

See it here -

You can vote to see Laura in the 'best of ' show at the end of the series ( on March 22) -

It was , of course , an excellent performance...but then I would say that! Hopefully it will serve to generate interest etc.

Thanks for the link John - I've just watched it now...

That is the best 12mins I've spent all year! Laura (and Mark) are on superb form in this feature. 'Two Seconds' happens to be one of my favourite songs by Laura, and her version here has to be seen to be believed - truly amazing, it gave me goosebumps watching and listening. She slowed the tempo down slightly which really gave it some extra feeling. Love it!

(And thank you RTE Two too!)
