Me and my acquaintances are in the habit of throwing together absurd mix CDs, but I find myself struggling with this one. Perhaps the Matador community could consult their archives of morbid records made by pale young men with troubled thoughts. The only rule is you can't use Joy Division.

This is what I got so far:

Lou Reed "The Kids"

The Smiths "Asleep"

Radiohead "We Suck Young Blood"

Johnny Cash "I Hung My Head"

Elliot Smith "King's Crossing"

The Walkmen "French Vacation"

Sam Cooke "A Change Is Gonna Come"

Perhaps the Matador community could consult their archives of morbid records made by pale young men with troubled thoughts. Try just about anything by a pale, troubled, not-so-young-anymore woman: Aimee Mann.

Xiu Xiu fits your original bill.
The Kills' "Monkey 23" is haunting and sad IMO.

Sam Cooke "A Change Is Gonna Come"

I've never found this song depressing, but rather sincerly hopeful, inspiring.

As for suggestions, the first track on The Cure's Pornography .."100 Years".
And I guess Leonard Cohen is as obvious as Joy Division, but "Dress Rehearsal Rag" from Songs of Love and hate is a good choice for sounding genuinely desperate and suicidal. And "Out of Reach" by John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers with Peter Green.

Can't have a depressing songs mix w/o "Atlantic City" by Springsteen...

I'd also have to add "Asleep" by the Smiths.

Thoughts?

"Ave Patricia" by Joel R. L. Phelps & The Downer Trio (offa Warm Springs Night) is the saddest music in the world.

"Disorder" by Joy Division, as played by Bedhead, off the 19:10 EP.

ahhh...you all...December's not that bad. Anyhow, if yall insist on moping:

Songs:Ohia- Two Blue Lights (or maybe just all of Didn't It Rain)
Baptist Generals- Diminished (No Silver/No Gold...an overlooked album? justifiably ignored?)
Smog- I Could Drive for Miles
first Crooked Fingers album
pretty much anything by East River Pipe (the best artist I've listed so far? I believe so)
that Gary Higgins album
middle two albums by Versus make for some pretty good breakup music.

I once had a friend who said that indiekids or what-not are by nature a pretty morose, depressive lot. Sometimes, ya have to wonder about this. Have plenty of songs in my collection I think are pretty happy/joyful, but pale in comparison with happy/joyful songs in other genres. Hmmm. Any of you guys think there's a mindset that goes along with this kind of stuff?

Bootsy Collins=not too good for the moping.

I don't know, the way he sings "I know a change is gonna come!" kind of gives me the feeling that a change will, in fact, not come. This for me lends the song its inherent sadness.

Thanks for reminding me of Leonard Cohen, by the way.

You could buy the Good Will Hunting soundtrack, or just listen to Elliot Smith - Between the Bars.
