the old one was impressive, but alas it had an expiration date.
arthur russell - another thought
grateful dead - fillmore west 1969 (discs 1 + 2)
optimo - psyche out
we love yura yura teikoku (disc 1)
gary panter - YLT hanukkah mix
DJ cam - mad blunted jazz
love is all - 9 times that same song
seeing as i can't remember when i last listened to them, i really didn't expect to start the year with the dead. but those fillmore west discs are killer ... taken from the same shows as 'live/dead,' and i'm realizing that the grateful dead recordings that i most enjoy seem to all be from a small sliver of 1969.

my original comment was detailed instructions on how to reach my house, but then I realized "Wait a minute, that's probably not a good idea, what with me finally having an internet stalker and all" so I re-edited it to give even better directions to my house, then I realized what I had done and just deleted the entire post.

Sum 41 Does this Look Infected?
I haven't heard anything about them since fat lip aside from recently hearing the frontman was dating some big celebrity. Aren't they poppy punk with lyrics mostly about being dumped, and other angsty teen problems? I hope I don't come off as bashing them-- I have nothing really to base my assumptions on but please enlighten me!!
Also, I just heard a song last night: Smoke and Mirrors by RJD2, anyone feed me some background about them? I listened to some of their other stuff and it all seems pretty up in the air as for what their backbone sound is like.

rjd2 is a single, pretty hit or miss hip-hop dj. if yr familiar with prefuse 73 and undie-hip hop stuff (a la def jux, rhymesayers, lex) in general, you have a pretty good frame for what to expect. prefuse 73 and mike ladd are probably the best reference points, because they all work in that clicky, glitchy aesthetic, but rjd2 is more soulful. since i haven't listened to him in awhile, i can't tell you about any particular songs, but since we last spoke is pretty good and deadringer is okay. overall fun stuff.
-edit-
i guess that isn't a very enthusiastic reco, but you could start worse places if yr looking to get into this stuff.

I listened to it a coupla times today, and I hate to be this guy, but jesus, buy a My Bloody Valentine record or the Black Tambourine discography CD instead. sounds great, but they have absolutely NOTHING new to bring to the table, and don't do the homage charmingly enough to make it their own in any way.

re: serena maneesh, what i found odd was how they briefly seemed to be pitchfork's new favorite band, but it didn't register anywhere else and seemed to do nothing for them. (PFM was all about love is all recently as well, who i think rule ... hope the same doesn't happen to them.) anyway, serena maneesh are playing a gig here in a week or two w/ asobi seksu, i may check em out ... asobi just finished up their new album and apparently it's awesome.

You're right... 1969 was *the* year for the dead. Live/Dead is clearly their major work, imo. I'm convinced that people who are into the era/genre but have some sort of preconcieved, ungrounded distaste for the grateful dead would perhaps reconsider upon hearing these shows. They went through this 6 month period of being invincible... alas, I have to hear these new releases.

oh no you didn't drop the "hip" bomb! I'm not tryin to score points here! :)
I love the genre, and I guess that's why I was so let down. Its not that I don't think there's room for new bands in the shoegaze realm, but I guess I think of bands like Psychic Ills who are really bringing life to the proceedings, rather than sounding like they studied a textbook and repeated the answers.

I hope I don't come off as bashing them-- I have nothing really to base my assumptions on but please enlighten me!!Deryck (sp?) is dating, and may have married, Avril Lavigne. Sum 41 are somewhat poppy but throw in a lot of metal riffage and some stinging lead guitar, two things the majority of the MTV punks wouldn't (and probably couldn't) dream of doing. Blink 182 sing a lot about relationships (I may be wrong as I'm not a fan as every song of theirs sounds the same to me) but Sum 41's lyrics run the usual punk rock gamut from teen suicide to politics to relationships to who's an asshole (that'd be Anna Nicole Smith, BTW). They come off as a lot more honest than the rest of the mall punk bands and they write catchy tunes.

Lukas: Folk Implosion was Lou Barlow of Sebadoh and a guy named John Davis. They made an amazing lo-fi album called Take a Look Inside. Then they wrote much of the score for the movie "Kids", scoring a radio hit with the song "Natural One". It kinda went downhill from there, and then John Davis wasn't in Folk Implosion anymore and it became just another Lou Barlow solo project.
I myself thought One Part Lullaby was a terrible bore, but that could be cos it sounded so straight ahead compared to the amazing shit on the soundtrack and that weird-ass first album.

Oh, right, my mistake. The New Folk Implosion Album is the one that's essentially Lou solo. John Davis was still involved in One Part Lullaby, now that I think of it. Its just that Lou toured for that record solo, with a minidisc player.
I just liked it better when they were fucking around with tape decks, before they bought ProTools.

re: folk implosion, i agree it started going downhill after the 'kids' soundtrack but i think 'dare to be surprised' holds it own. i never got into 'one part lullaby' though.
Was it just me, or did anyone else think folk implosion's name was a riff on Jon Spencer Blues Explosion?
While the Kids soundtrack is, I think, the best thing Lou Barlow has ever been involved in, a lot of his other stuff is worthwhile if you don't mind listening past filler.
I really liked one part lullabye. It's got some awful songs on it, like EZLA, but more great ones than the average sentri-folk-seba-doh-plosion record, and I think the cut and paste production works really well for the most part.
Still, if the only thing Lou ever wrote was "Spoiled" the world would still owe him a debt of gratitude. That is one hell of a song--The percussive guitar, the twisting melody, and how'd he do all the string orchestration on his 4-track? I'd be really surprised if he had a mellotron back then, so was it sampled and cut up some how? Or was he playing along with a recording?
And thanks Mr. HCI for the reccomendation, I'll keep my eye out for it.

Though, in the liner notes for the Dead Fingers Talk reissue, the guitarist claims none of them were gay but that is contradicted by statements in interviews printed in the booklet. And, interestingly enough, Tom Robinson ended up marrying a woman. I bought his Love Over Rage CD a year or so ago after reading some rave reviews (best since PitD, they claimed) and really hated it.

Yura Yura Teikoku Sweet Spotso mr. HCI, what's the best yura yura teikoku album to start with? i keep on going back to your YYT mix, so many *great* songs ... i think it's time i graduate. (although japanese imports generally scare me off.)Well, my favorites are probably III, 『ゆらゆら帝国のしびれ』 (or, phonetically, as you'll find it at most English-speaking sellers, Yura Yura Teikoku no Shibire) and Sweet Spot.
If you prefer the over-the-top garagy stuff to the weird, tripped out stuff, though, you might want to go with 3X3X3 or Me No Car.
If you want all new stuff, www.Mesh-Key.com had copies of Sweet Spot on CD for $18, last I checked. Since I made that comp before SS came out, you might want to start with that one. BTW, Matador Recording artist James McNew listed Sweet Spot as his #1 album of the year on Billboard's website and our own Dave listed it his year-end favorites list in the last news update. You'll also find it in my top ten for the year in the best of 2005 thread (though I need to update my list, YYT will still be in the TT).

I love it but, then again, I love all of them.
One warning: 『ゆらゆら帝国のめまい』 (phonetically: Yura Yura Teikoku no Memai), the companion piece to 『ゆらゆら帝国のしびれ』, is devoted totally to their lush, mellow side. It's a great bedtime album but not one to spin if you want to kick out the jams, motherfucker.

yeah, seriously, hit that Silver Apples business. The song "wet one" from the Kids Sdtrk isn't that far from some stuff on the first Silver Apples LP either. When I finally heard the Apples (I'd already known FI), I realized how much that soundtrack was indebted to Simeon.

I love that Fehlmann record so much. Have you heard the new Orb on Kompakt? Some of the Fehlmann tracks are super nice.
Also, tell me more about the Feelies. I keep hearing how they're a band I should have heard.

that is a great fehlmann record. i have lowflow as well, but ain't as crazy about that one. i haven't heard that new orb on kompakt disc or any of the orb releases for that matter. i'm not sure why i've never felt compelled to look into them, but should, i suppose.
i can't speak for any other feelies albums, but crazy rhythms is the shit and you should go get it asap. it's one of those records i feel stupid for not owning sooner--just got it a few weeks back. i'm not very good with the descriptions, but i'll say it's fun, loose, and jangly post-punkish sound. it's fun to hear the bands that influnced the feelies (such as the velvet underground) and then to hear bands were influenced in turn by the feelies (i was like, oh, the ponys basically stole the song loveless love). crazy rhythms is OOP, but definitely worth hunting down. i'll leave it to HCI and crew to drop science on the rest of their story. my question is what happened to these guys?

I've not heard the new Orb album either (well one track), but I'm told that the it's in two very distinct parts - first half rather uptempo, second half more chilled-out. Might get to hear more tomorrow. I used to have a lot of the early to mid 90's stuff, but unfortunately not any more.

The Feelies released four albums and you need all of them. All are full of jangly, post-VU/Television hyper-strum with wonderful melodies. Early Yo La Tengo is rather Feelies-esque, IMO. After those four albums, co-founder Bill Million became a locksmith while the other co-founder Fred Mercer started the similar, and very damn good, Wake Ooloo, who released three albums for the Pravda label. Oh, and there are a bunch of A&M-era Feelies promo singles/EPs with non-LP tracks and the standard-issue No One Knows EP with a few nuggets on Coyote. You pretty much need all of them.

it's a touchy area in psychedelic circles... a lot of hardcore psych fans hate on the Strawberry Alarm Clock for being bandwagon jumpers.. which, let's face it, they were. Their music was tailor made for the charts when psychedelia was all the rage. Suddenly this bland surf band was dressing in paisley shirts and singing about hippies and incense. Poppy and cheesy as can be. So, I never made the effort to get into them. Then it occured to me, fuck it, I love cheesy pop-psych, damnit, I even love the monkees. So I got the album. It's cool..
I think these S.A.C might have possibly made the best psychadelic records ever produced.
In my opinion, nah... you really gotta hear the more underground psych bands who often released only 1 or 2 singles.. psychedelic compilations like Rubble, Nuggets, Chocolate Soup For Diabetics, Hens Teeth, The Perfumed Garden, and so on and so forth. You find tracks on these comps that blow S.A.C out of the poppy, tepid, packaged waters where they resided. You gotta get the "Nuggets II" box set. It has all the greatest underground psych tracks. In a nutshell, look to British psych. And check out these albums/bands for some of the best ever produced:
- Kaleidoscope (UK)
- The Misunderstood
- Tintern Abbey

Well the merits of the Fading Yellow series aside, but getting any of those CDs would be some serious cart before the horse action. Since we're talking about such a huge amount of music here and, as Lukas keeps reminding everyone, he's just a kid! Here is what I would deem essential listening for the Canadian kid:
Nuggets Vol.1 box (all american) a bit more garage than psyche, but there is not a bad song on here. Absolutely essential.
Nuggets Vol.2 box (the rest of the world) Also absolutely essential.
After you digest those you'll know if you need more or not. If so here are some other comps that should bend or break your mind:
Back From the Grave. Rawest of raw, crudest of the crude. Amazing. eight volumes on LP or 5 CDs
Teenage Shutdown So far there are 15 volumes (of a promised/threatened 30 or so) each one focused musically (Fuzz, Frat, Folk etc.) Lots of stuff that was previously on some other comps, but these are by far the best sounding, most well researched etc.
Lastly, and I think I've said this before, in my opinion the best psychdelic record (or at least darn close) would be Jefferson Airplane's After Bathing At Baxter's. So many, many bands owe everything to this album. An absolute monster. It should be noted that Sundazed has just recently issued a beautiful MONO! LP edition (still not available on CD).
Ok, that's a few hundred dollars worth of music so we'll stop for now.
Dave
I bought all those sundazed mono Airplane reissues recently, they're so awesome. And Nuggets 2 really is the place to start for good, good psych. Then, if you wanna go further, there's a neverending bucket of psych comps and releases from that frighteningly productive 4-5 year period in the late 60's.
Big 10-4 on this band. Awesome. Quick caveat though - start with Before the Dream Faded. Then if you like it, try Golden Glass. Side one of BtDF is fucking ace. However, I can't really get into GG. there are parts of BtDF that put the Misunderstood WAY ahead of their time, imo.
Yeah, they were about 2 years ahead of everyone else, and then the singer got drafted.. have you read the GIGANTIC story on these guys in the magazine Ugly Things? They could (and should) publish it in book form by now.
Golden Glass itself is a great psych song, but the line up of the misunderstood by then only had one remaining original member, Glenn, the incredible pedal steel guitarist.
'Before the Dream Faded' is where it's at.

Of Montreal is one the five best bands in America and Kevin Barnes writes the most consistenly catchy melodies of anyone since . . . uh . . . Mozart? "Satanic Panic in the Attic" seems to be the across the board favorite, but there really is something for everyone. "Cherry Peel" and the other early recordings have a charming lo-fi quality, "Satanic Panic" and "Adhilis" clean up the sound for more straight forward power pop, and "The Sunlandic Twins" is an ambitious and totally successful venture into dance pop. This is sure to raise Troy's ire, but "The Gay Parade" is an incredibly fun listen and features one of the few songs that upon hearing, I immediately thought, "I would love this in my wedding." By the way, that song is "Neat Little Domestic Life."

We have a british influenced system of english here, so we use "colour" and "favourite" and so on. I like colour with a "U" better anyway.

...in my opinion the best psychdelic record (or at least darn close) would be Jefferson Airplane's After Bathing At Baxter's. So many, many bands owe everything to this album. An absolute monster. It should be noted that Sundazed has just recently issued a beautiful MONO! LP edition (still not available on CD).
Ok, that's a few hundred dollars worth of music so we'll stop for now.
Dave
How does ABAB compare to Crown of Creation and Surrealistic Pillow? I have these albums but, frankly, I can't stand the insipid hippie songs that fall between the great tracks.

Rush A Farewell to Kings ← finally rebought it after selling it around 20 years agoCranking a little "Xanadu"?You know, that one has some decent musical parts but the lyrics make me wanna puke.
I bought it primarily for "Cygnus X-1" as I remember loving that one when I was a teen. Well, the riff that pops into my head often, and that I figured out how to play a while back, is not from "Cygnus X-1." I guess I was confusing parts of it with "The Necromancer" from Caress of Steel . . . or something else . . . "Bytor and the Snow Dog" from Fly by Night, perhaps? Anyhow, I had sorta fond memories of AFtK but I'd forgotten how wussy a lot of it is. Oh, well. It was used and wasn't too expensive, thankfully.

I think you just summed up Rush right there:)
They were about my favorite high school band, and I get nostalgic once in a while, but when I put on one of their albums, it usually kills the feeling pretty quick. Except Side 1 of 2112, which rocks.
If you are thinking of riffs, it might be "Anthem" off of Fly By Night.

Getting back to the main point of this thread:
"judgmental" is the US spelling, and
"judgemental" is the British spelling
Doesn't Canada use British spellings in general? ("Labour," "honour" etc.). In that case Lukas was right from the first, so far as he's concerned.
PatrickPatrick has brought me to my knees. Despite the fact M-W makes no allowance for judgemental (yet does allow for both judgement and judgment (http://www.geocities.com/rwh5a/judgment/) ), I busted out the OED. I stand corrected -- judgemental is a valid alternative. But let the etymological record show that the word was first used in 1909, spelled as judgmental!
The Canucks may employ British spelling (http://www2.gsu.edu/~wwwesl/egw/jones/differences.htm), but they speak more like Americans. What's that about, ay? ;)
Sorry to hijack this thread. And now back to the regularly scheduled program...

Haha!
Very funny TSD...
So judgmental is listed as an OK alternative by the OED... interesting. So I wonder whether it was always 2 ways in Britain or whether this is a typical modern UK "borrow-back" from the US.

Ok, out of what I have (there's some King Khan stuff and some 7"s I haven't tracked down yet) I would say: almost, but they seem to have brought out the best in each other.
The two BBQ albums are both great, but not quite as good as the Goner album.
I don't have the most recent King Khan full length,"Mr. Supernatural", but I have one called "Smash Hits" that took a while (and the Goner LP too) but it is pretty good. The tracks I've heard from "Mr. Supernatural" are good though. The King Khan side of the Dirtbombs split LP was hot too.

As much as I've soured on Wilco, this will have to be a pretty spectacular decade for YHF not to be one of the 10 or 20 best records released during these years.
Also -- for what it's worth -- Jay Bennett and a few other people claim that that argument and the following scene were edited together from a few different moments. Along with a good chunk of the rest of that film.

As much as I like YHF, I really do think it pales in comparison to A Ghost Is Born and Summerteeth. "Pales" is the appropriate word, actually, b/c I find Jim O'Rourke's production on YHF to be so cold and, at time, lifeless. Also, I saw them play the record twice before it came out, and back then, Leroy Bach would play the intro to "Jesus, Etc . . ." on organ. It was much more soulful and, IMHO, better.

i dunno, i really like YHF's production. i see what yr saying but i think it suits the songs well, it gives the record a cohesive feel. 'a ghost is born,' on the other hand, is their most uneven record IMO, but it also happens to be my favorite one. ('being there' could take that slot if it was just one disc.)

Absolutely! These records are among the most underrated records from the 1980s, or any decade actually. And these 2 in particular catch G.I. at the peak of their existence. The ones directly before and after are good, but 'Joy Ride' and 'The Fun Just Never Ends' are supreme...

I *love* "I See Colors", and the overall production is nice... but there's something about the way he raps that drives me crazy... he over-enunciate's his words in a way that just... shits me. It's like there's no subtlety to his style or something...
are you familiar with Quasimoto?

I know what you're saying about his enunciation, but I love that shit. I guess it sounds so much like Boston/Cambridge to me. Its not really a Boston accent at all, but it reminds me of a bunch of hip hop heads I knew growing up, who all sort of affected their speech like that, and its really endearing to me. "Leh-ttuce and Tomay-toe, add a dab of May-yo.."
Quasimoto/Madlib is a monster, fucking genius. I need to bust out The Unseen more often.

If you were to rank all the bands who've ripped off the Chameleons/Joy Division/The Cure/Echo & the Bunnymen/etc. over the past 4 years, ILYBICD would be somewhere right about in the middle. Better than hangers-on like The Bravery surely, but not as exciting or deeply genuine as... well, I can't think of any who fit that description. They've got great basslines, though.

I'll do the semi-unpopular thing and I guess add Elf Power to this list. Yeah, they never really stuck out from the pack in the same way as many of their weirder cousins, but, in this man's opinion, they put out some really interesting guitar pop in their hey-day (my favorite period: Winter is Coming to Nothing's Going to Happen, which holds the possibly dubious distinction of being one of my favorite covers album)
What have I been listening to anyways, you don't ask?
Mixtape my friend made me of some old-timey Greek music.
Mp3s of some oldtimey Cajun music I found on the interweb.
Raekwon- Built for Cuban Linx
Tom T. Hall, "That's How I Got to Memphis" (I just ordered Storyteller, Poet, Philosopher...am I gonna like this? Is this good? Should I have just purchased some actual albums, no matter how uneconomical that would be?)
A-Frames- Black Forest
Mixtape of homemade recordings made by friends. Some is really funny.
I gotta say...I'm really, really enjoying the listening to my old walkman.
I also just ordered a Monoshock cd, Running Apelike or something. Was this a wise move? Anyone have this?
Have been considering purchasing:
Bobby Bare's Greatest Hits
a Mummies album
Furry Lewis cd
Numero Group Eccentric Soul stuff
Folkways Music of Indonesia stuff
the Thalia Zedek album Matador released a couple years ago
New Bomb Turks- Destroy-O-Boy
I really, really want the American Folk Archive thingy, but, not enough dollarz.
People...feel free to dissuade me on or endorse any of the above?

I never really thought Beulah were anything special, and I don't think Bablicon were really part of the E6... at least Jeremy Barnes said he never considered them to be part of it. I forgot about The First Imaginary Symphony For Nomad... it's pretty sweet; top 5 for sure.

i've been listening to this joakim track, "i wish you were gone," ALL DAMN DAY. holy shit, fiona, 9000, earl grey, probably even paul and salman, you guys would love this! big rubbery bass and loose drums, kinda like a dfa track with a tighter freak-out around the 6.5 min mark. plus the synths sparkle something like new order and the guitar bit sounds like it escaped from "age of consent." hunt it down!
also, i've been listening to silver jews' tanglewood numbers in the car. i really like it a lot, which surprises me as much as the rest of you.

oh, i actually think i maybe heard this tonight. the name rings a bell, i think my friend pointed out. he mentioned it's on ewan pearson's recent mix, if it's the same song. yeah, definitely dug it.

Groooaaan, another Eur13 import 12"! Did you get the 12? The dub version on the b-side apparently has less guitar, more synth and an even greater degree of punk and funk.
Oh, Vesper I meant to ask if you had the Trentemoller remix of What Else Is There? Haven't heard it yet but it supposed to be eh, "the shit". The ep it's on has other remixes by Vitalic and Chicken Lips (not TWD - that remix is stunning, ta v much) so wasn't sure if you'd got wind of it.
vesper
01-28-2006, 01:05 PM
yeah, i have that trentemoller remix. i'm not as sold on it as the rest of the internet apparently is. the really dark, brutal techno (a la black strobe) doesn't click with me as much as the sparkly, whooshing stuff (why i'm such a geek for stuart price and ewan pearson), but the song is definitely worth checking out. each time i listen to it, i'm actually a little surprised to here that it's only 7 minutes long. he covers A LOT of ground in that song -- so much that i'm not really sure how well it would work in a club.
-edit-
i also haven't heard the chicken lips mix, but the vitalic one is pretty good. i also heard jacques lu cont's radio mix of "what else is there?" (not the twd one), and didn't really like it at all. his thin white duke mix though, jesus, i really don't understand how anyone can give a shit about "mr brightside" after that.
