the other one seemed pretty successful.
kevin federline's single, "popozao," as a whole, but especially the first 10 seconds or so, which wouldn't be that out of place on a gang gang dance or animal collective album. other choice moments: "i wanna see your kitty and a little bit 'a' titty"; "bring that brazil booty on the flo'"; "THAT GENIUS I DO SHOUT."

Bryan Harvey and family, murdered. I don't know how many of you guys have ever listened to House of Freaks, but they were one of my staples in high school (especially the Tantilla album). The thought of someone who soundtracked a wealth of my teenage memories (or anyone, for that matter) being deprived of life in this way just makes me physically ill.

Songwriter Says Columbia Dropped Her in Fight Over Album
By ALAN LIGHT
Nellie McKay, a young singer-songwriter whose 2004 album, "Get Away From Me," was one of the most acclaimed pop debuts in recent years, says she has been dropped by Columbia Records just as her follow-up was scheduled to reach stores. While Ms. McKay had been negotiating for some time with the label over the length and final song selection of "Pretty Little Head" - which was supposed to be released today - she says the decision not to put out the album was a result of a recent executive shake-up at Columbia, and "had more to do with my personality" than with the album itself.
The London-born, Harlem-based Ms. McKay had been fighting with the label over her insistence on a 23-song, 65-minute version of the album; Columbia was pressing for a 16-song, 48-minute version. (The two-CD "Get Away From Me" has been called the first double-disc set ever released by a debut artist.) At recent shows, Ms. McKay had given out the personal e-mail address of the Columbia chairman, Will Botwin, from the stage, encouraging fans to lobby him for the release of the longer album. "I thought we had resolved things favorably," Ms. McKay said. "We were just finalizing the artwork."
But last month the Sony Label Group, which owns Columbia, underwent a corporate restructuring; Mr. Botwin left the company and was replaced by the former Epic Records chairman Steve Barnett. After that, Ms. McKay said, her lawyer received a phone call informing them that Columbia would not be releasing "Pretty Little Head" in any form. (Representatives from Columbia said that no one could be reached for comment because of the holidays.)
"Whoever called to tell us said that she hadn't actually heard the album," Ms. McKay said in a telephone interview on Sunday, "and said that 'this isn't about the music' - which I thought was really funny. The conventional wisdom is that the music industry is money-driven, but this actually had nothing to do with money, it was an artistic disagreement." Ms. McKay, in fact, fronted the money for the album's recording sessions as a way to keep her record company at arm's length.
"Pretty Little Head," which features duets with Cyndi Lauper and K. D. Lang and songs addressing gay marriage and animal rights, had already been provided to the press, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Spin magazine called the 21-year-old artist "a sharp-eared satirist" and said the album was "not only a testament to McKay's talent, it's also a tribute to her artistic sense." In a four-star review, Blender described Ms. McKay's sound - which is inflected with both cabaret style and hip-hop flow - as "indie musical comedy," and said that "McKay is pushing forward the craft of the song, connecting Tin Pan Alley to Ben Folds and De La Soul." (Ms. McKay said that getting such press without actually having an album for sale is "kind of nice, because people can just read the reviews and then not be disappointed.")
Adding to the complications is the fact that Ms. McKay (pronounced Mac-EYE), who recently contributed several songs to the soundtrack of the Jennifer Aniston film "Rumor Has It," will be co-starring alongside Alan Cumming, Ana Gasteyer and Ms. Lauper in a new production of "The Threepenny Opera," opening on Broadway in March. Rehearsals begin later this month, which would severely restrict her ability to promote "Pretty Little Head"; she recently joked that she took the role as a way to get out of touring. Ms. McKay said she assumed that this also played a part in Columbia's decision, saying it was "a combination of things, adding up to irreconcilable differences." Billboard reported late last month that the singer had left the label voluntarily.
Columbia's sister label, Epic, went through a similar situation with another young female artist last year, when Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine" was leaked on the Internet after a lengthy delay amid widespread rumors that the label didn't think the album was sufficiently commercial. Though Ms. Apple has repeatedly denied any artistic pressure from the company, she has said that miscommunication with Epic did slow down the album's completion and even led to her considering leaving the music business. When "Extraordinary Machine" was released in September, it became one of the year's most highly praised albums.
As for "Pretty Little Head," for now its future is in limbo. Ms. McKay is trying to buy back the rights to the 23 songs and determine what to do with them. "There's lots of legal stuff," she said. "We're just trying to get it out as soon as we can."
Meanwhile, the politically outspoken and slyly acerbic Ms. McKay (whose "Get Away From Me" was a slap at Norah Jones's breakthrough album, "Come Away With Me") said that her feelings about the split with Columbia were decidedly mixed. "I think for both sides, it's liberating," she said. "You have no idea how much of a pain I can be."Well, that's me an unhappy camper. :(

their first album was indeed music-wise terrible and only "enjoyable" on an ironic level. for their follow up, they've basically cribbed the sound of the Sub-Pop girl bands from the mid 90s, only with better hooks and less-obviously racist lyrics. I think if people give it a fair shake they'd be surprised at how good it is. How far can you seperate an artist from their art?

I think the problem with the NME is that they are basically the British Nationalist Party of the music press world, like they take every oppurtunity going to say "British music is the best in the world" (which I don't agree with - to me it's American music). So everytime some bunch of lads from old Blighty show up with a half baked record all of a sudden they're the saviors of music and made into cover stars whereaes an American band could release the modern equivalent of Evol and be ignored.
I think Chan's proven this with The Greatest (I don't read the NME but Ive never seen her on the cover of it).

My guess will be when their second record comes out sometime next year.
Predicted Arctic Monkeys career projection (in two phases)
1. Ride on the pop audience for about 12 months, securing a multi-million selling debut album and making Domino records very rich indeed and atracting major label interest (similar to the Matador/Capitol dealings of a few years ago). Whilst this is going on they are being derided by the indie sector as being fakers.
2. Second record comes out but the fickle pop audience has lost interest. They turn to the indie audience as a shoulder to cry on but said indie audience was never there for them. Very low record sales and after a few weeks the CD moves to the HMV sale bins retailing at £1.99. Monkeys split up and are left practically penniless just like every boy band before them.
I think thats a fairly accurate summing up of the next 18 months in the life of Alex Monkey.

oh man, this is so good.
So some of you may already know this, but:
The crazy crazy film director Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man was his most recent flick) was shot with a pellet gun by an unknown assailant during an interview with the BBC.
What does Herzog do? Call the cops? In classic Teddy Roosevelt style, he continues the interview while the blood soaks through his clothes.
He says, "It was not a significant bullet."
Is that not badass?
And this comes a mere week after he pulls Joaquin Phoenix from a wrecked car. Who is this guy, Batman?
This, from the Pitchfork news article today about the new Walkmen album...
"...they seem to have found time last month to record a full-length rendition of Harry Nilsson's 1974 LP Pussy Cats, which will see release via Record Collection later this year."
I am frightened.

I'm actually more excited about this than the proper Walkmen album. Come on man, Nilsson is great!! Long overdue for a credibility comeback, if for the cover of Son of Schmilsson alone (although the one where he turns into a giant crab is also pretty cool)
since when did Nilsson not have credibility?!? I mean, other than James Murphy almost killing it.

Asked by Stahl with regards to effect of sanctions against Iraq: "We have heard that half a million children have died. I mean, that's more children than died in Hiroshima. so, basically, Sully was saying that it's alright to make decisions and not think about the consequences. not only to not think about the consequences, but to not even consider them. . . and there you have, distilled to one fine kernel of truth the essence of mainstream middle american idiocy. . . it always comes out as, "So i made a decision, so what? Like I have time to sit around all day and think about what that means." How come people get away with shit like that?. . . I mean, obviously they decided not to eat a plate full of cyanide for breakfast because there's a real consequence to that. I guess, unless it effects them directly, they just can't be bothered. It's kinda like asking a consumer why they consume and they respond by saying it's because they buy stuff. Well no shit! Why are so many people unwilling to deal with the larger more abstract ideals that come up daily in our lives?

I got carded going to the concretes show with my buddies. This is Montreal right?
New York - MTV Networks announced that it plans to debut a new show called "Meet or Delete," in which college students will choose prospective dates, roommates and band members based solely on the contents of their computers' hard drives. "PCs have become the emotional hard drive of our global audience, making the premise of 'Meet or Delete' relevant everywhere in the world," said MTV Networks president and COO Michael Wolf. Participants will be able to see e-mails, IM logs, pictures, music playlists, recently viewed websites, video files and whatever else is on the hard drives of prospective dates. MTV is collaborating with PC maker HP on the show, which will be broadcast on MTV's on-air, online and wireless platforms beginning May 10.
Strangely, that doesn't seem "WTF" to me at all. We all know MTV lost the plot years and years ago, and this show is just one big Hewlett Packard commercial with a little bit of a "game" thrown in.
yeah, that's obvious. i was just thinking about the boundless possibilities for all the mbb'ers. god knows how that would turn out.

Supposedly sounds incredible, but has build quality along the lines of a 1980s laserdisc player (which it physically resembles), and can't deal with the SLIGHTEST warp, piece of dust, scratch, grit etc.
My initial reaction is against it - the gutsiness of vinyl surely comes from the needle ridin the grooves at micropressures tons per inch - but there's no question that in the optimal conditions, it must deliver completely surface-noise free sound and the full analog wavelength - probably as close as you can get to an analog master tape short of reel to reel.
Michael Fremer reviewed it extensively in Stereophile and the review should be in their online archives. Go to stereophile.com and search for "ELP Laser Turntable."

I think a Pavement reunion would be much like the Pixies reunion, in which S.M., playing the role of Frank Black, would probably continue to release studio albums and tour w/ the Jicks when not selling out midsize theatres across the county w/ the reformed Pavement (Matt Sweeney playing the role of Spiral Stairs, no doubt).

I think it would be a one shot deal (touring everywhere once, playing all of the festivals) and then everybody would go back to their life as it is now. I love Pavement and Id welcome a new record but it wont be the same as it was, it cant be and never will be again. Some of them have families now and more important things to think about.:)

a sad and ugly end to what had been an inspiring finish to a brilliant career. yeah, zidane's incident + red card were pretty hard to believe, and certainly killed france's momentum. (he just missed being the hero but for buffon's amazing save a few minutes prior.) they showed him getting roughed around a little just beforehand (some chest-grabbing, i think), but the response was still totally unacceptable - especially for a player of his stature + intelligence, on that stage and that late in the game. shocking.
anyway, the french loss was not a huge surprise afterwards, especially with all their top players missing for the PK's, but it was still sad to see them go down. they lost by just a crossbar in the end. :(

does that mean the guy was speaking italian to zidane, who could understand it somehow? or is english the international language of insults?
ok everyone, screw "soccer", back to baseball.

i believe zidane knows italian from his time playing in italy for juventus. (i've always wondered, though, what language is being spoken when players inevitably jaw at the ref after a call they don't agree with.)
re: baseball, i would but the all-star game still bores me. used to love it as a kid but baseball tonight and interleague play have taken the excitement out of seeing NL players in action.

The media here and in the UK are reporting that the term used was "dirty terrorist". Racism has been a big problem in Italian football, for a player to bring it onto the pitch, if that's the case, would be disgraceful.
In any case, the latest is that Zidane will make a statement within the next few days.
I've heard people yell in German then end with, "SHITHEAD!"Not "SHITHEAD! FOR SURE!"?
Counterpunch: Why I Wear My Zidane Jersey by Dave Zirin (http://www.counterpunch.org/zirin07112006.html)
Right now, we do not know beyond a shadow of a doubt what was said but all the circumstantial evidence points at least toward a variant of SOS Racisme's claim (that Materazzi called Zissou a 'dirty terrorist' -d.). Zissou is the son of Algerian immigrants who has sparred verbally with Europe's far-right political machine for more than a decade. He is an outspoken anti-racist on a team that has defined itself by its multiculturalism and stubborn insistence to stand up against bigotry both inside and outside the sport. Materazzi on the other hand, will be playing this year for the Italian team Lazio, where his father was the former coach. Lazio's fan club, The Ultras, are notorious for their Fascist-friendly politics. Lazio's hardcore Ultras, known as the "Irriducibili," have members in Italy's extra-parliamentary far right and try to use the club to recruit. The group has frequently uses racist and anti-Semitic banners, one time hanging a 50-foot banner that said their opponents were a "team of niggers."
It's wrong to taint Materazzi for the actions of Lazio's fans, but there is more. Earlier this season in a match that pitted Messina against Inter in Sicily, Messina's star African player Marc Zoro famously picked up the ball and walked off the pitch in protest of the monkey chants rained upon him by Inter supporters. In a stirring act of solidarity, many of the Inter players immediately showed support for Zoro's actions. But one opponent yelled, "Stop that, Zoro, you're just trying to make a name for yourself." That opponent's name was Marco Materazzi.

Pah, what do I know about it. What I do know is walking around with one's hand permanently down one's kecks seems both uncivil and unnecessary.

forget the dirty south, its 90°+ in the dirty humid northeast too.
Also, the apartment I'm getting ready to move out of has a charming tendency to be about 10° warmer inside than outside, no matter what the weather. pretty nice feature in the winter, but downright unlivable right now. also, because the management pays for electricity, theyr'e the ones who decide whether we can have AC or not. and the answer is not. One reason we're moving, for sure..

And Moon Pix, we've had multiple threads about 'selling out', I am not starting a rant or wtvr. I am just pointing out that it came to me as a shock to hear them in a computer commercial, considering how obscure they are.

I hate to say it, but 13th Floor Elevators aren't obscure by most measures.
I mean, having them be in a current Dell commercial is a bit odd, but its not like they were some tiny band that nobody but the elite nerd crew knows.

put it this way: I see 13th Floor Elevators albums in Borders and Barnes & Noble and other huge chain stores that don't really deal with obscure psych, as a rule...

Ooh, I disagree. I find it pretty great, and far superior to the more long-winded book.
Ooh, I disagree. I find it pretty great, and far superior to the more long-winded book. The film leaves some of my favorite parts of the book out, but in the end it doesn't matter. It's sort of like loving both the UK and US versions of The Office. They're both hysterical, but in different ways and before long you forget they're telling the same story.

wow, i figured this debate would've been well worn around here. . . and i'd have to say i disagree and think that the book is much better. the movie really pissed me off when they changed a fundamental aspect of the lead couple's relationship. also having all the top ten lists worked for me in the book specifically because they were all spaced out, but not so much in the movie where it seems like rapid machine gun fire, as if they had to cram all of 'em in there.

I liked this movie the first time when it was called...mmm'Bastard out of Carolina
Also, the summer camp story was unsettling but by reacting the way the adults did, doesn't that make things a million times worse? To board up all the nooks and crannies of the playground equipment and then to kick out an 8 year old kid based on the word of two freaked out 6 year olds? Don't parents just have heart-to-hearts anymore?

The fact that everybody in Britain is going f***ing barmy over Queen at the moment. Were'nt they a joke band or something.
The notion that Queen was a joke band is probably the most "WTF" thing anyone's said on this board in all of 2006. Way to go, Moon Pix!
There ain't nothing funny about Queen.
Back to the 13th Floor Elevators and Dell thing, I think that both being Austin phenomenons would explain it.

Well I don't know. Im just of the belief that Bertie Russell wasnt clapping his hands together when Fred penned the deeply philosophical lyrics for "I WAnt to Ride My Bicycle."
Well, everyone knows we here at Matador are about being kind to the environment (http://www.matadorrecords.com/matablog/?p=117), so if you've got a problem with bicycles, Moon Pix, you best step off.
