rebecca gates has a residency at the knitting factory tap bar this month, and malkmus and ida are the guests next tuesday. dunno if it means they're her band, or if they're opening, but it should be cool nonetheless. the tap bar, IIRC, is tiny.

i haven't heard any of rebecca's solo stuff, but i always liked the spinanes.

yup it's true:

A Residency With:
Rebecca Gates, Stephen Malkmus, Ida
Price: $9.00
Date: Tue, Jan 10
Start Time: 7:30 PM

1998's Arches and Aisles, the final album by indie-rockers the Spinanes, was a solo album for singer/guitarist Rebecca Gates in all but name; for her next project, she made her solo status official, retiring the Spinanes name. Gates originally formed the Spinanes in 1991 with drummer Scott Plouf in Portland, OR; the band became one of Sub Pop's first non-grunge signings, recording three albums over the course of the '90s. Plouf left after the second to join Built to Spill, and Gates recorded Arches and Aisles under the Spinanes moniker, with help from some of the biggest names on Chicago's experimental indie rock scene, including Sam Prekop (of the Sea and Cake) and John McEntire (Tortoise, among many others). Gates employed much the same progressive approach on her official solo debut, Ruby Series, which was released in summer 2001; she also co-produced the record with McEntire and Brian Deck (who also helmed Modest Mouse's The Moon and Antarctica).

hey is SM gonna be opening up, or just playing with rebecca? i'm psyched either way, but if he's opening, in the tap bar ... well, that could be amazing!

Does anyone possibly know the start times for each? I know it says 7:30 on the website but that surely has to be when "doors" open and not when music starts. Thanks in advance!! I'm trying to get out of a meeting with a VIP and get to the Factory on time....

so malkmus walked on stage tonight (it was like 10 inches high), said he didn't have much of a plan, and proceeded to play ALL REQUESTS. first three songs (if i can remember the order correctly) - "shoot the singer," "we dance," and "box elder" (my request!). i was right in the front and it was so fucking great. seeing a show like this was like a dream.

pretty even mix of jicks + pavement songs - he also played frontwards, major leagues, gold soundz, church on white, freeze the saints, witch mountain bridge, vanessa from queens, ramp of death, and maybe one more that i'm forgetting at the moment. "major leagues" was really nice. (i liked it much more than usual!) show overall was pretty sloppy but endearingly so ... he was having a lot of fun, lots of joking around.
