in the interest of starting something that isn't another list thread, try to answer this question: would you readily spend money on a re-issue that doesn't have bonus tracks if other, perhaps/probably of lesser sound quality, issues are still in print? i ask because the first three wire cds (pink flag, chairs missing, and 154) are getting re-issued in their "purest" form in march, and i got to thinking that i haven't bothered to pick up many of those can re-issues and none of those funkadelic re-issues because, in no small part, i already have the material they're offering. i guess really it boils down to questions of money, audiophilia, and yr satisfaction with the product you have (ie - my restless/retro copy of chairs missing sounds fine + 3 extra songs).

i can see the ups and downs of both, although i lean toward the wouldn't-buy camp myself. using wire as a model, apparently colin newman hand selected the man remastering them, so we can at least assume that *maybe* we're getting something closer to what they wanted then and what they definitely want now. i can't argue that appeal, but i also don't entirely see the point.

In Pavement's case, even if the re-releases didn't have new material on them I still would pick them up. The art in all the cd's is awesome. I like what they look like on my CD rack.

Reissues of previously reissued material with no bonus stuff strike me as pointless, in general. In the case of Wire, who put a bunch of great stuff on singles, it seems even more pointless. Does the new 154 at least come with the four extra tracks that were included on a 7" EP in the original LP release? If not, that's some extra screwing they're handing out.

i don't know what the deal with the tracklisting is. even 7 or 8 different google combinations aren't turning up any substantial results as to what the final product(s) will look like. i've only heard of people getting promo copies, but i'll be sure to pass along information as i get it.

is there an official matador stance on what you try or try not to do w/r/t re-issues? how much say does an artist have in the re-issue process, especially artists whose work is being re-mastered/issued some time after its original release?

Artists have total say (within cost limits), just as they do with every Matador release. That said, they do invite our advice and comments - even if they don't always follow them.
