Why has The Greatest been released on iTunes already??! Is it just a fluke or is it the real thing? The release date for it has been posted as January 23, 2002... did iTunes make a mistake?

all you Cat Power fans out there, please refrain from buying this from iTunes now - every sale that doesn't fall within the first Soundscan week contributes to a lower chart position when we debut!

We are trying to have this removed as soon as we can...

I had no idea iTunes sales counted towards the SoundScan figures.

I can't anyway and would reather wait until the 24th it's quite amusing non the less.

iTunes full-album sales count toward Soundscan figures and thus the charts.

Individual track sales are now also counted by Soundscan, but on a separate basis.

This goes for other digital download retailers as well (but not subscription services... yet).

Before realizing that it would hurt the charts I went ahead and purchased The Greatest. I'm probably going to buy a copy for my girlfriend, so it won't really hurt the Soundscan. My only thing is that the album is good, in fact really good... when you compare to everything else being put out right now. The only thing is that none of the songs really touch me in the way that older tracks like Rockets or Nude as the News did. It's definitly worth the purchase, but doesn't seem to move the band forward in the way that 'You are Free' did.

I kinda know what you mean there. You Are Free seems to be the "high water" mark thus far.
