Its just good clean fun. "Stack Shot Billy" alone wins the argument for me, say nothing of "Till I Get My Way." ;)

I think I have HCI. I don't hear any other bands these days that instantly remind me of Jimi Hendrix, other than The Black Keys.

haha, though i think school has put my best days behind me...

radiohead were great last night. i've seen better shows from them, but my seats were also kinda crappy. they always put on a solid show though. i liked the new songs a lot, nice to see them making things a little dancier. i was hoping for more surprises in the setlist, but hopefully those will come tonight. i've got GA tix tonight too, which should make a huge difference.

the black keys were pretty good (esp. when they rocked out) but i think i side with the dissent on the whole hendrix "debate" lukas. i wish deerhoof was also opening up the east coast dates! (even tho they're just a trio now - hope they can still blow the roof off live, the dueling guitars were pretty important.)

also saw the rapture on sunday, who were good - really fun show. crash mansion is a terrible venue but they made the best of it, and i like their new songs. "W.A.Y.U.H." is the one that leaked and i think it's the worst of the bunch, actually. favorite sons opened - they were pretty good, the singer was channeling ian mcculloch. and dead combo also opened - one of the worst live acts i've seen in ages. we couldn't tell if they were a joke or not.

if "w.a.y.u.h." is one of the worst, i really look forward to their new album. that song absolutely kills! when is the new album supposed to be out by the way?

"W.A.Y.U.H." has a nice groove but i don't remember it really going anywhere - others were more interesting IMO. not sure when the album is coming out ... they seem to take their time in the studio.

BLUE CHEER is coming with DEAD MEADOW and I'm not going to be able to go. NOOOOOOOO!I saw Blue Cheer in the early/mid-80's with The Obsessed opening. I couldn't hear for two days afterwards. Unfortunately, their current tour is coming nowhere near me at all.

Hmm... So I should see them when they come to NYC, then?

But I think they're playing at North Six, which is probably not somewhere I want to go by myself, I don't think. I'm going to check this up.

northsix is right off the bedford ave stop on the L. it's in the middle of williamsburg and you wouldn't be in danger walking there on yr own, should you need to.

I thought TSD meant the venue itself.

Anyway, I went to see Arab Strap last night. I've seen them lots of times, but this was the first in five, maybe six years. It was great to hear tracks from the new album live, esp "There Is No Ending". A few earlier songs thrown in too, incl "New Birds", a favourite of mine.
Bigger and better with age.

saw deadbeat last night. meh. was better last time i saw him. the sound needed *way* more bass. dub without enough bass is like weak coffee.

tonight - asobi seksu + PAS/CAL. psyched for it, esp. because i think betty marie barnes will be singing with PAS/CAL.

solid show tonight. both bands were good, though i've seen better shows from both - PAS/CAL were on borrowed equipment, and asobi set the bar really high for themselves two weeks ago. but man oh man i think i am in love with betty marie barnes.

Last day of the Desdemona Festival here in Cinci, the Walkmen, the Fiery Furnaces, Rouge Wave, W.A.S., Heartless Bastards, and Radio 4 all for $12, sounds like a good deal to me. This will be the first time I've seen the Furnaces.

Last time I saw Liars I made the mistake of standing in the front row. Angus Andrew is a very drippy sweaty performer and could give Mark Eitzel a run for his money when it comes to singing+spraying. Yuck yuck yuck. And he stood on my handbag. Not cool.
Good gig mind.

brightblack on friday ... good times. wish the vox were higher in the mix - i'd love to see them somewhere small + seated with pristine sound. but all the percussion was awesome!

alas we didn't realize how close it was to selling out, which forced getting there right when doors opened. and the easiest way to pass time in an empty mercury lounge is drink, drink, drink...

9000
06-25-2006, 08:43 PM
liars: i wasn't close enough to catch sweat or have my handbag stepped on, but i could definitely tell that angus andrew left it all on stage. lots of credit for that.

brightback: eg, how much smaller do you want than mercury lounge!? wish i had gone to the southpaw show on thursday. my very bad.

no, mercury lounge is great size-wise, i'd even be fine with some place bigger. i meant small more in relation to seated ... most of the seated venues that do shows are on the larger side, i think. joe's pub would be perfect for them though! or maybe even subtonic (standing), just for a different feel.

crowd was pretty into it though, the start of "everybody daylight" (last song) even got a cheer.

Just got home from seeing the Buzzcocks in Athens, GA. Damn! They and Queens of the Stone Age are just about the only two bands that can get me dancing (slamming, not punching and kicking) in the pit like I used to do two decades ago. I may be middle-aged but I'm not old!

yeah i saw them a couple times after their last album came out and was pretty unimpressed. saw them play some new stuff last fall though and it was more interesting live. i need to hear their new record.

decided to hit the fixed party after last night's yankees/mets game, ended up seeing pixeltan. they were cool for a couple songs but there was no need to hear them for 40+ minutes. every song pretty much sounded the same. great DJ'ing afterwards though, incl. a wicked stardust ("music sounds better with you") > hot chip ("over and over") mix from JDH.

best thing about YYT is there's a second show waiting tomorrow night in case they knock it out of the park tonight. (i forget who said it in another thread but we definitely get spoiled in NYC.)

idjut boys were fun last night but it distinctly felt like a warm-up gig, like they were just messing around at the decks. i suspect PS 1 today will be more of a proper set from them, which means i need to make my way over there!

earl grey
07-09-2006, 12:35 PM
wow, yura yura teikoku killed it last night. (vesper can vouch.) they're such veterans on stage, SO TIGHT. the bassist was amazing yet he barely broke a sweat. "the man is unstable" (the "hey boy/hey girl" song) was insane. they totally needed to play longer though - their songs are like 10 minutes each but they didn't play much more than an hour. very tempted by tonight's show, if i'm still standing after the world cup final...

and the idjut boys were awesome at PS 1 too, a million times better than the night before at APT. the bearded one is unafraid to drop the hits and they continually brought the house down - especially "digital love" (daft punk) and the stones' "start me up."

early notice, but spank rock and gang gang dance are playing together at mccarren park pool on 9/3 (this can also go in the WTF thread). hippie prog jams + over-sexed over-bass'd bumpers. i guess the connecting factor is that you can dance to both, although those are two very different dances!

Zero 7
Kasabian
The Spinto Band
The Weepies
Animal Collective
The Upper Room
Franz Ferdinand
Guillemots
The Rifles

Pretty Girls Make Graves
White Rose Movement
The Morning After Girls

partial sets from:
The Who
The Strokes
Maximo Park
We Are Scientists
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Gomez
Manu Chao
The Zutons
Damien Dempsey

Highlights:
The Futureheads <--- can always be relied upon to raise spirits, turning point of the day.
Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins <---who wowed a certain proportion of the audience not just with the stunning set, but also with their co-ordinated bum-skimming gold sequinned dresses & cowboy boots. I was just happy to avoid the 15 minute deluge from above when the roof was split open and gallons of water poured in from on high. Played a couple of new songs, "Fernando" and "Jack Killed Mom", latter was v good, stronger of two.
The Spinto Band <--- Great set, delighted they drew a couple of thousand of a crowd, pretty impressive at 2pm. They also played new material, 'twas okay.
Guillemots <--- Super live band, great fun.
Sigur Ros <--- garnered a 15 minute ovation. Wow, as always.

Disappointments & missing/not getting around to seeing:
The Twilight Singers not showing
Headman
Vitalic
Mylo
Erol Alkan
Digitalism
Who Made Who
Not getting to see the World Cup final.
Seeing a lot of bands I wouldn't have been bothered about/missing a few I would be bothered about because of the weather.

The Spinto Band just played Atlanta for the second time a couple of weeks ago. The first time through, I think I may well have been the only person there to see them open for what appeared, from their equipment and dress, to be a really bad heavy metal band (and I like metal). I was thrilled for them that this time they drew a good-sized and very enthusiastic crowd.

Spank Rock was confirmed for a show here at Electric Picnic that weekend. Sounds like that's not happening after all. Now EP's sold out, they can dicky about with the line-up to their heart's content.

They've picked up a big following here over the last couple of months. A presenter on one of the national radio stations latched on to them, and has been giving them a lot of airplay. Nice when that happens to a band that deserves it.

The mighty Decal and Battles in Whelan's last night. It's been years since I saw Decal, but awesome doesn't even cover it. Add astonishing, astounding and other alliterative superlatives as you wish.

Battles were Decal's equal. In the sweatbox of Whelan's (John Stanier was really feeling it) the hotness of their set was nicely complemented by eh, their hotness. They're a fine looking bunch of lads.

Please allow me to plug the band of some friends for a moment. Bucks and gallants are on their first tour (though 3/4 of them have been making music in a group setting for many years now). Fans of the fall, oneida, and quintron could do worse than to give these guys a listen. Also, if anyone wants to help them put on a show in nyc on august 5, it seems their originally scheduled gig at the cake shop just fell through. They're on myspace but no audio at bucksandgallants.com as of yet.

Did anyone else on the board attend the Pitchfork Music Festival last weekend in Chicago? On the first day I caught:
Hot Machines (meh)
Man Man (best of the first day and an overall highlight) from the front row, as well as the Walkmen (pretty good, but not great) from just a few rows back.
Didn't get to watch too much else as I was helping a vendor with records both days. But that got me early entrance and I got front row the second day as well and stayed in the same spot for the entire day in the heat (over 90 degrees) and didn't move more than maybe a foot for about 11 hours. I saw:
Tapes n Tapes (worst set I saw)
Jens Lekman (never heard before the festival and liked a lot, very fun)
Liars (another highlight, if you look at it from a performance art perspective, only one song from the first album and a lot of noise and broken guitar strings, still unforgettable)
Mission of Burma (fantastic, this is the first time I've ever seen them and they blew me away, they really looked like they wanted to turn my brain into jelly. the stuff from the new record is amazing live)
Yo La Tengo (another fantastic set, mostly new material. Especially towards the end, which climaxed in a guitar freakout. Their set seemed the shortest though, which is a shame.)
and Os Mutantes (amazing to actually be able to see, especially from the front row. I was a bit bummed there was no Rita Lee, but they played most of the songs that I hoped they would and the replacement did a pretty good job. They only played for maybe 40 minutes, though. Sergio Dias is a great guitarist. Lots of people boo'ed and threw bottles when they didn't come back out for an encore.) Overall, the festival ran well and the record convention was good and I picked up quite a bit of good vinyl as well.

saw sleater-kinney earlier tonight - their last-ever NYC gig. longest show i've ever seen them do - over 1 hr 45 min! and it was absurdly hot in there. but they played "the hot rock"! first time i've seen it since the very first time i saw them, back in '98. great setlist and show all around, they will be most certainly be missed...

I too was at the Sleater-Kinney show. That was totally insane. A really nice guy let me in with his extra will call ticket for free because I didn't manage to get one before it sold out. I've been a big fan since around when One Beat came out and the only time I ever saw them was at Madison Square Garden, which was a great show, but I was so far away and they only played songs off the Woods which hadn't come out yet.

That was easily the best night of summer.

I went to a couple of great shows last week.

Thursday (27th), Eagles of Death Metal tore it up at The Variety Playhouse. I love both albums and live they were killer. The front guy (name???) is a master. He was goofy and obviously acting the part of rock star yet came across as totally sincere. He was especially excited 'cause he's originally from Toccoa, about an hour northeast of Atlanta and this was their first time in the area. Peaches was the headliner but I saw her open for Queens of the Stone Age a few years ago and opted to go home, instead. :)

The next night was a full-on heavy and/or metal show with local doomsters Zoroaster (new EP out on Battle Kommand/Southern Lord) opening for touring partners Unpersons (complex and very heavy while chaotic yet tight, tight, tight) and Black Cobra (heavy, little [literally] duo comprised of former members of -16- and another group . . . Cavity, maybe?. All three slayed and I was headbanging so ferociously that I started wondering if I'd be able to even move my neck the next morning. I could, thankfully.

Shows coming up I'm most excited about in the next coupla months: Just last week got permission to take a few days off then bought my ticket to see Venom at Jaxx in Springfield, VA. I've been needing a road trip to see friends and family in the area and how could I pass up motherfucking Venom?!?!?!? An Albatross here at home . . I'm guessing you won't be there, huh Joel? my band's upcoming reunion show here in the ATL Counting Crows w/The Goo Goo Dolls JAPANESE NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL ver.4
(tsuyama atsushi/yoshida tatsuya/kawabata makoto) ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR (tsuyama/yoshida/kawabata) RUINS ALONE (yoshida) AKATEN (tsuyama/yoshida) ZOFFY (tsuyama/kawabata) ZUBI ZUVA X (tsuyama/yoshida/kawabata) SEIKAZOKU (tsuyama/yoshida/kawabata) SHRINP WARK (yoshida/kawabata) Daughters Jucifer CD release show Gossip (tied w/Yura Yura Teikoku for best show of 2005) Unearthly Trance + Facedowninshit

Be Your Own Pet and The Raconteurs were at The Olympia tonight. We missed BYOP as incorrect stage times were published. I saw BYOP last year and they were great so was a bit peeved about that. Anyway The Raconteurs rocked the place, and they even played a cover of local act Jape's "Floating" - big up for Richie!

A couple of other good ones this week: Weds - Deerhoof, Thurs - Beck and Radiohead. I know I said wasn't going to go to Radiohead, but the sun was shining, a ticket came my way, so it was off to Marlay Park for the evening. Even spending 90 minutes travelling a few miles out of town didn't darken the mood (sorry Paul, I'm letting the side down here. Was in shockingly good humour, nice to kids etc.). Sadly, we missed Deerhoof, who were first on the bill, thanks to the traffic, but didn't feel too aggrieved having seen them the night before. Greg's drumming reminds me of Animal.

Also missed part of Beck's set, grrrmph, but caught almost an hour of it. Strangely downbeat, other than E-pro, Devil's Haircut and Where It's At. I hear they've been doing the puppet films throughout the tour but whatever, it was funny. The scenes of the puppets getting wasted and trashing Radiohead's dressing room were genius.

Not much to say about Radiohead other than amazing sound, visuals and they played the four songs I wanted to hear most so yay.

Montreal this weekend:

Today-
Heavy Trash, Bush Tetras, James Chance and the Contortions (with Pat Place? I mean, the BTs are here and everything), Dinosaur Jr, Amon Tobin, Sonic Youth, Hall & Oates

Tomorrow-
Herman Dune, Lady Sovereign, ESG

I will be seeing none of these performances.

Osheaga was pretty good. Mid day was pretty lame, but there were some wonderful moments. Think About Life was absolutely killer, Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah were 30 minutes late, and they played this terrible techno while we waited, but it was worth the wait. Sonic Youth killed it, and Mark Ibold was beautiful, if anyone was there - I was the one screaming out "CARROT ROPE!". Dinosaur Jr. were great, and played the songs I wanted to hear, but unfortunately I went deaf half way through so I had to leave. All in all, it was a terrific day, the music was chill and the setting was wondeful. Parc Jean Drapeau has some great scenery. OSHEAGA!

BTW, I met the Magic Numbers and they are way nice, and the girl from Metric was sitting next to me at Think About Life, but that doesn't change the fact that her band sucks.

It was also the song that Ibold was most involved in, other than a bass player. And this was not a sonic yout hshow, it was an indie rock festival. There were as many people wearing Pavement shirts as there were wearing Sonic Youth shirts. And for the record, I think Carrot Rope is cool.

If it meant listening to idiots scream for songs by long defunct bands because their bass player is earning rent money as a hired gun in another band for the summer, then I'm glad I didn't go, regardless of how much I enjoy material the BTs and Contortions released 25-28 years ago. With my luck, the BTs would've played material solely from their Tim/Kerr album, anyway.

heh, you never know, but i think you would've made out fine ... i've seen them a few times (once just before the T/K album, twice after) and they've always played almost all older stuff. (and they've *killed* it every time.)

on the BT's myspace page - so absurd that they have one - they actually have hugo burnham liner notes from an upcoming album. it also says they're playing a soul jazz party in november, maybe there's a connection there.

Thanks for that head's up, I just checked out their page. The "forthcoming (?)" part doesn't exactly sound all that confident (on one of the members of Liquid Liquid's MySpace page, he asks if anyone with a label is interested in an album he just recorded to get in touch with him, so I'm not sure if ex-99ers really have all that much demand for new material), but I'd definitely give it a listen were I to find it.

BTW, someone left comments on that post stating that it was the original Contortions, sans Jody Harris, that performed yesterday, so I'm a little miffed I didn't go, although given the price of a festival ticket and the type of audience there (as seen in this thread), I'm not too upset.

I'm a rough gem.

Islands, Wolf Parade, Final Fantasy, Bell Orchestre were all brilliant. Like, overwhelmingly good. Bedoin Soundclash were pretty cool and invited this old school reggae guy to join in for 3 songs. I went to half of The Hidden Cameras set, but left disapointed to go see my man G. Love, but was again disapointed to find a square rapping while sitting down. WTF happened to him?
....And finally, the Flaming Lips. I had never see them before, so it came as a shock. I knew somewhat of what was coming, but to actually witness it is a whole different story. The whole thing was awesome, and capped my first festival experience nicely. Although, throughout the set, I got this feeling that under Wayne's overly happier exterior was a sad tired man. He did, however, seeme to enjoy himself inside that bubble. Man that was cool!

Looking back, Think About Life put on the best show. Cheers!

I've seen BJM at their best (transcendent) and worst (tragicomic), I'm really hoping he's trending towards the former, as he really deserves more than to be a footnote in the "best rocknroll fights ever", but its his own fault if he doesn't amount to it.

Normally when I play with people I admire I look forward to the idea of meeting them, but with Hagerty, I know he's a reclusive type, I'm happy that I just get to see him kick my ass all over the room with his playing.

Look out for drunken post-show rambling from me here in about 24 hours.

You are not appreciated.:p

I must say though that I really love the Fall and this will be the first time Ive ever seen them. I heard this interview recently off KCRW with Mark where he said that he can't understand why they were called a punk band cause "the punks hated us." Thats why they had to play Northern working mens clubs, 'cause they just didnt fit in with anything else going on in Britain at the time and couldnt get a gig anywhere else.

Talk about putting yourself outside the millieu.:)

On a Fall related note, does anybody know how far Castle music have got with their programme of reissueing the Falls records in expanded and remastered editions. I went in the record store yesterday to buy This Nation's Saving Grace but it had Beggar's Banquet and 1988 on the back so I left it.

soulwax, however, were *amazing* last night ... i saw them do 'nite versions' live with a band, and i was surprised to see that they play it 100% live. and they absolutely nailed it ... one of the best, tightest sets i've seen all year, which is so much more than i was expecting. a bit like LCD soundsystem live, but better. it was so good that i didn't even mind leaving only 15 minutes into their 2manyDJ's set (3 AM is tough on a school night).

I went to see the Black Keys last night. They were really great. I don't know the bands catalogue inside out and upside down because Im only heard Rubber Factory so I didnt recognise most of the songs but even so they are a really hot live band (big big sound). I got my place in the front row right in front of the PA and had ringing in my ears when I came out, pretty loud.:)

Anyway, they ripped up "Stackshot Billy", a song thats more powerful and intense live (Ive never felt that they captured it properly on the record). The other songs I knew were "10AM Automatic" and "Grown So Ugly." I can't criticise them at all for what they did and I never knew before how much Dan rocks out when he's playing. Whats great about them live is that all of the dynamics are intact and pulled off with easy, every quiet-to-loud move and vice versa seems to come naturally to them. Dan played every somng on a white Gibson-SG.

The only downfalls for me where -
1) the Heartless Bastards werent the support band.
2) they don't really talk much to their audiences. Its personal preference really but I love it when I see a band live that engages with their audience in that way. However I must also say that theres something about Dan's presence onstage that doesnt really make you feel like he's trying to stay distant from the audience. When I went to see the Kills last year to me it felt like a 'we're too cool to talk to you people' kind of thing but with Dan theres an intimcy and a warmth.
3) They didnt play "Couldnt Tie Me Down."

Sorry about not being able to offer a more indepth account but I didnt recognise most of the songs. Even so, the Black Keys still rocked my socks off and I had a great night.:)

Last night:
The Fall and Fujiya & Miyagi at The Village, followed by Superpitcher and The MFA (live) at Pogo.
Fujiya & Miyagi were better than I expected live, very funky and tight. Took them a little while to win over the crowd, but once they did, it was 100%.
This was perhaps the least erratic, quirky Fall gig I've been to, musically or otherwise. (Last time they were in town MES went awol before they were due to take the stage, the band had no idea where he was. A few hours later they found him in a pub. Show went ahead, and was incredible.) It was a thundering set, and barely paused for breath. "I Can Hear The Grass Grow" was as light as it got. Highlights: "Sparta FC", "Reformation", "Mr. Pharmacist" and "Blindness"

MFA live was decent, from what I saw there wasn't much of a flow stylistically which made it difficult to get into their set.

First time seeing Superpitcher spin, and he threw me for a loop. My expectations were based on mixes I've heard which have in general been icy, minimal and just plain wonderful. Last night's selection was clearly happy superpitcher, all wave-your-hands-in-the-air and a lot of fun it was too. Finished off the set with "Baby's On Fire".

On Friday I went with two buddies to go see Islands play, but we were carded by this asshole of a bouncer. Standing next to they door was Graham from Think About Life so we asked him if he could help us out. He tried to no avail, but alas [sp?] the bouncer kept his ground. We thanked him as he left to wherever. The next night me and some more friends, including the two that were with me the night before, went to go see Think About Life with Genou. We got there an hour early and saw Graham again, and he gave us a wave. Pretty nice guy I thought. However, I had no idea how cool he was until right before they broke into there first song, Graham said into the microphone, "This song is dedicated to the kids who tried to get into Isalnds last night, but the asshole bouncer wouldn't let them in!" Fucking awesome!

Report from last nights Fall show. Being somebody who hasnt yet heard Fall Heads Roll I didnt recognise most of the set but it doesnt really matter cause the energy was there, especially on the final encore "Mr Pharmacist" to which I could be seen pogoing to enthusiastically. The Fall's speciality at the moment would seem to be the hard yet danceable beat and that was pretty much how I would sum it up, given that their newer material like "Blindness", "Sparta" and "Wrong Place, Right Time" is far less abstract and idiosyncratic than some of the older numbers that they don't play anymore ("Eat Yr'Self Fitter", "Hip Priest"). Personally I was hoping for "Container Drivers" or "Cruiser's Creek" but I didnt get it and I was hoping Mark would have something to say to us but he didnt speak a word the whole night. Pretty damn good overall though.

On a related note, my honest opinion is that the support band stole it. Id never heard of them before but I made my way over to the stage after they finished their set while the guitarist was messin' with his pedal board and had a word with him. Turns out that theyre from Stourbridge (which is only down the road from me) and that this show is their penultimate gig. Theyre playing one show in about a months time (that I will now be attending) and thats it, finished. Theyre called Das Pubic Fringe and they play garagey blues-rock cover versions (personally I only recognised "Redemption" by Johnny Cash.) I said to him "Id like to see the Fall top that" and he said thankyou and shook my hand.

Just in case your wondering, the Fall didnt top that.

Fall's setlist is here (http://www.thefall.info/fallsite/?p=311).

i understand that they raise a mighty and transcendent ruckus!
They most certainly do/did! The Comets On Fire show in Whelan's was fantastic. My ears were ringing after the first number :D

Also this weekend, Hot Chip and Junior Boys. I liked Junior Boys live, even if the songs sounded very much like they do on record. "In The Morning" is such a great track. On the other hand, Hot Chip bent and reshaped nearly every track from 'The Warning'. Now I've seen this backfire on plenty of occasion esp where danceable music is concerned, but they pulled it off magnificently. There were a few new songs in the set which continued in the same vein as 'Boy From School' etc. - definitely ones to look forward to hearing recorded.

Last night we went to see The Raconteurs, which wasn't the plan I signed up to. That was to go to see The Rapture. I suppose predictably enough the audience went bananas for the entire set. I just thought it was all a bit dull.

- definitely ones to look forward to hearing recorded.

did the JB's have a live drummer? they had one when i saw them in september, he was the main reason i much preferred their 'last exit' live show ... this was early in the current tour, but the only thing he seemed to do was rob the songs of their subtlety. still a fun show though. jeremy greenspan's "real" voice is a bit of a surprise...

hot chip are playing webster hall in NYC soon ... i hate that it's such a big venue but i think i should go, 'the warning' has yet to get old to me and i keep on missing out when they play here.

any other NYC ppl make it to optimo on friday? not a big surprise, but it was awesome. definitely the lightest on the "hits" of the optimo sets i've seen here, most of it was very acid heavy, a bit like the first half of 'psyche out.' i liked it a lot. there was a nice block of reggae too, and other twists peppered throughout.

i really wanted to make it to the end, but the rest of my crew was done and i was dragged out around 3:45, right after "revelee"... :(

They did have a live drummer, though bless him, you couldn't actually see him behind all of Hot Chip's gear. I couldn't level the same criticism at them as you, if anything they underdid it live. Can't say I noticed too much difference between the live and recorded vocals either - what did you pick up on? Really, I just thought it sounded a little too much like the record and they could have stood to experiment a little.

Go see Hot Chip live! Of course a smaller venue's preferable - but I wouldn't say the atmosphere the other weekend in Manchester Academy 2 (cap 800) was any livelier than than on the previous couple of occasions I've seen them, in 6000 cap marquee!

Just got home from the first show I've attended in over a month. I saw The Dresden Dolls along with an opener I wasn't crazy about and a host, Sxip Shirey, who performed a few musical numbers and managed to make a harmonica sound like a pipe organ (I was impressed enough to buy his CD after the show).

The Dolls themselves were fantastic. They played for two hours and some songs had me headbanging as furiously as if I were at a metal show. From the records I'd not realized what a great drummer Brian Viglione is; I was quite impressed.

i agree they didn't do enough to deviate from the album, i guess that partly was my complaint w/ the drummer ... he basically just played over a programmed beat and didn't really add anything. so he covered up the interesting subtleties of the programming w/o adding much of his own.... the two songs that were most different live were "the equalizer" (which had awesome live bass) and "under the sun" (ditto, but w/ guitar). "bellona" was really awesome the first time i saw them, too.

as for greenspan, his vox are pretty similar live but i found his "real" voice (i.e. for between-song chatter) to be hilariously normal, esp. compared to what he sounds like on album ... no smooth croon in there whatsoever.

this didn't come as a surprise, but lavender diamond were so, so good last night at joe's pub. i was super excited for the show as joe's is basically the perfect venue for them, plus i've had all their new songs stuck in my head since i saw them in march, and they pretty much delivered. the piano was a little low in the mix, so they didn't sound as good as in march - but they played 2x as long as at those SXSW shows, so tons of new stuff joined all the songs i remembered. i really heart this band.

apparently their new material is out in the spring. (perhaps on matador?) that feels far away but i'm sure the wait will be worth it...

They had a show scheduled here back in July but it was pulled on the night, no explanation, very disappointing. Been busy 'round here - Tues thru Sat:

The Basement - nope
M. Ward - mesmerising
St. Vincent - nope
Sufjan Stevens - lovely
A Hawk And A Hacksaw - fantastic live
Beirut - a lot of fun
Calexico - a bit stiff at first, once they loosened up it was good, if a bit polished
Somadrone - emphatic yes
Luftkluster/Luftfluks & Henning Lundkvist - preferred the gentler parts of their set
Psychic Ills - excellent, if somewhat short set. It was very drone-driven and not what you'd expect after listening to Dins. None of the melodic elements were present. Drumming was superb. I know a few of you have seen them live - do they normally play as a four piece? On Friday there were three of them, perhaps they had to change to accommodate.
Mono - another emphatic YES.

they were four piece when i saw them this summer. i hope they didn't drop the sound effects (knob-turner?) guy, because he brought good sounding vibes. hopefully it was just a traveling accomodation thing.

The promoters of Friday's gig this morning said that the band lost their keyboard player last week, so there you have it.
Hopefully they'll be able to recruit a suitable replacement soon. They have some dates scheduled locally (your locally) for next month I believe. Back here in the spring.

Mr HCI I have to say I am in complete agreement with you over the sheer awesomeness of The Gossip live. I've been at shows eight of the last nine nights, and seriously thought fatigue would have set in, but zero chance of that with last night's performance. Uh-MAZ-ing.

Big up as well for support Cap Pas Cap, really enjoyed their set. The first support act, Comonechi, were okay I suppose, though most notably I remember thinking I'd have considered their guitarist's black and cerise mohair jumper verrrry stylish in 1986.

I saw Wreckless Eric for the second time (and second time this year, no less) last night here in Atlanta. It was just him, his guitar and his voice and was pretty incredible. I'm not sure how long he played but it was probably around two hours. He opened with "Same" from Bungalow Hi, ended, of course, with his first single, "Whole Wide World," and in between hit most of his records plus several Len Bright Combo numbers (nothing from Captains of Industry or The Hitsville House Band, though). He also told lots of hilarious stories between and during songs and did a short reading from his book, A Dysfunctional Success.

In my place, my usually musically unadventuress dad went to see the Flaming Lips tonight (I have a terrible flue, by far the worst flue Ive ever had). When he came back I asked him what the support act was like and he said it was a band with " a Chinese girl singing and playing bass called De Horst or something." He really liked them so I decided to have a look on the net.

It was Deerhoof.

Jeez I keep seeing the same three shows over and over.

J. Trachtenburg and J. Lewis were very fun to see at the Brooklyn Peace Festival in October. Worthy music for a worthy cause.

The Sun came up, the Sun went down, Les Savy Fav rocked again (@ NYU), ho hum. Here's hoping that some of those kids were taking notes and that Mr. Harrington's rope burns heal quickly.

jim dickison played solo and went through about 10 songs on a rented old acoustic guitar, which he said, "he was unworthy of playing." dickinson also did a few songs on piano. although i know he's legendary and all, i'm not terribly familiar with his work. regardless, i enjoyed his set: witty songs and great banter. olu dara followed with about an hour of free jazz and then was joined by dickison for an improvised jam. the theme was missisippi sounds, so delta sound was prevelant.

as for the venue. whew-weee. from website:

Set amidst the gothic bar of an 1840's Gramercy Park mansion, the Paris Bar is one of the most intimate venues in New York. Beginning in the fall of 2006, a series of evenings will bring an eclectic mix of music to the room, combining the new and the old, the elegant and the weird. With a capacity of 250, the setting conjures Paris, Berlin, New Orleans, and an elusive sense of old New York.

Just got back from the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Really great. Ill certainly go again because Anton interacts with his audience. On this particular night and in typical Anton form he refused to take any shit from the people shouting stuff at him. I like there to be banter at shows and if there is none at all I feel theres something missing and I don't bother going to see bands a second time if they take the jukebox approach to shows (hence my dissinterest in seeing the Fall or the Black Keys again - great music guys but where's your personality?).

Musically it was the balls to the wall noisy psychedelic rock experience that I hoped it was going to be. The band were on for 2 hours which was a bit too long I thought personally (As well as audience bater Im also a fan of relative brevity, about 90 minutes or so is about my limit except in special cases - namely Chan Marshall who can do precisely what the fuck she wants and Id still go again as well as the Dirty Three and possibly
Smog too). They have a tendancy of getting to the end of songs and then draw them out for ages and ages by just repeating the chord progression over and over which is something I personally thing they should drop cause its just dragging it out needlessly.

As I say though Id definitely go again and there arent too many bands Ive seen so far that Id readily say that about.:)

I saw The Fray last weekend.

Mix the most boring aspects of Coldplay, for whom I don't care, and Counting Crows, whom I like, and you get The Fray. As a bonus, you get a row of teenage future frat boys and sorority sisters right in front of you. OK, maybe everybody there didn't but I did.:mad:

I can't complain, though; I got in free and they weren't the band I was there to see. I was there to see The Goo Goo Dolls for the third time this year. I'm sure I'm a minority of one 'round here but I love 'em and this was their best set of the year. Of the other two openers, I wanted to check out KT Tunstall but I was running way late and she played first and for only twenty minutes. I was told she was great, though.

Melvins & Big Business put on a Hell of a show in Athens (GA) recently. One of the highlights for me was when Dale came out and joined BB on guitar. They did a few songs then went into the "Mellow Down Easy" jam from the live side of ZZ Top's Fandango. As soon as everyone stopped but the drummer and he went into that distinctive beat, I was prayin' they would. They did but, instead of singing "got to mellow down easy" a bazillion times, they did a hyperspeed take on Chambi's "Mekkalekka Hi/Mekkalekka Ho" (sp?) chant from PeeWee's Playhouse. It was a beautiful thing.
