Tonight at the Knitting Factory:

The Bon Bombs and Rye Coalition totally brought the rock in style. (does that sound really really corny?) Great, great show. The NYC Smoke I found to be pretty dull, to be totally frank, but they were decent. Really tight and strong musicianship, but the songs were just sort of boring to me. The only amusing thing were the two, for the lack of better phrase, older women (older to me, but I'm a youngin') who were dancing very excitedly to the band. One of them was dancing in such a way that I could only compare it to the way white women dance on Chappelle Show. What was really funny was when she, I don't even know, I guess it was air drumming or something? That was really funny. I'm not a big dancer type, but these two were totally out of their element. At least they brought some humor to my night.

I can't find any internet presence of the Bon Bombs and I'd never heard of them before. Oh, the regret of not searching harder for the elusive merch table! I thought it was always in the little bar outside the little theater or whatever those rooms are called, but I didn't see anything other than people having drinks and enjoying their night. No CDs or tees or anything like that. Ah, well. I'm gonna keep my eyes out for 'em, bound to play again. All I know is that they're from New Jersey.

Last night I saw Celebration and The Double...

Pretty great show all around. Celebration's "guitorgan" guy was really the highlight of the show. I coulda watched him play all night. The Double were a bit more straightforward than I expected, but still put on a really good show. The arrangements were pretty close to the album, but those songs are so good that even though it lacked the adventurousness I was sort of expecting, it was still pretty damn great.

And last night I saw Mogwai at the Music Centre. Started off kind of quiet, volume was way down but once it got turned up all the way about three tracks in this was great. Mogwai should never be heard at anything less than all-enveloping full blast. They didn't play too many new tracks, just a couple. Seemed to be some problems with one of the laptops. The older the tracks the better they sounded - Mogwai Fear Satan and Like Herod were amazing.

last night at the sub-t:

mandy and the twins
moto
busy signals (about the 4th time i've seen them and the best i've ever seen them. maybe my new favorite band)
the spits (no keyboard for this show)

i would've paid to see any one of these bands headline. great night. i just woke up 20 minutes ago, there's no way i'm getting to sleep tonight.

It was a decent size event. Probably 1,500 -2,000 people, but it was still quite intimate considering the nature of the hall. Rumor is that they charged $1.1M for 90 minutes.

Going to see Low w/ His Name Is Alive in a week. Anybody know what their recent shows have been like? Just wondering if it'll be a sleepy show, or if they're playing the rock stuff mostly.

Also considering getting tickets for Magnolia Electric Co. and Destroyer. Haven't seen either band before, still figuring out if I wanna pay for that one......

Other shows planned soon:

Centro-matic (Mercury Lounge)
New Pornographers/Belle + Sebastian (Nokia Theatre)
Of Montreal/Grand Buffet (Bowery)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Bowery)
Mozart chamber music series (Alice Tully Hall) (woot)

I saw them a few years back at CMJ, they had a pretty cool sound, similar to this Portland band I've heard called Nice Nice, but the noodling to song quotient wasn't exactly where I like it.

Flaming nora, what a difference a few months makes. Last August I saw Arctic Monkeys in cramped Whelan's with Alex Turner's mum, dad and little sister standing beside me bopping around like goodo, waving to him onstage, taking photos and him waving back, mouthing 'am I doing alright?'. Tuesday night at the Ambassador, no such concerns as virtually the entire venue's barmy reaction to each song endorsed that yes, they were doing alright. And definitely no way you'd let your mum in that crowd. Kicking off their set with "Scummy" and "I Bet That You Look Good On the Dancefloor", their 'hits' might have been a risk but all it did was send the place into a conniption fit that continued 'til the end. I really like that album and they play it with so much energy, it's infectious. I fail to see how anyone couldn't enjoy seeing them play.

Poor Maximo Park having to follow that up. The kids mightn't see it, but they're by far the better band live. Paul Smith's frontman-isms may overshadow the rest of the band, but Lukas Wooller is determined to get in on the act and rightly so seeing as keys are such a big part of their sound. Anyway, it'll probably sound dead cliched but they really put so much into their shows - deserved headliners.

And Mystery Jets and We Are Scientists also played.

Monday night saw The Beautiful Newborn Children at Crawdaddy and it went something like this:
9.50 - Leave house
9.55 - arrive at venue, get pint in, say hellos.
10.15 - TBNBC come onstage to about 40 people. Blitz through album, crack jokes. Lots of fun.
10.45 - TBNBC go offstage for 10 seconds, play another track and go off. Say goodbyes.
10.55 - Get home.
Excellent!

Went to see Dr. Dog and CYHSY at the Village last night. Wow, Dr. Dog really blew me away. Played most of Easybeat and it sounds so good live.
CHYSY were okay, sound was woeful, way too loud and the mix was all over the place, but it was a fun night.

Later on headed to the Music Centre for Alexander Robotnick/Ellen Allien.
Highly productive Saturday night!

Went to see Brakes and Belle & Sebastian at The Ambassador last night. No exaggeration, best gig of the last six months, easily second of the last year. But seriously, there's a new album out this week and they only played 3 songs from it (Another Sunny Day, Funny Little Frog andTo Be Myself Completely) plus b-side Meat & Potatoes?!

As far as I remember most of the rest of the set was

I Fought In A War
The Model
She's Losing It
Electronic Renaissance
The Loneliness Of The Middle Distance Runner
My Wandering Days Are Over
Dog On Wheels
Women's Realm
I'm A Cuckoo
Jonathan David
The State I Am In
You're Just A Baby
If She Wants Me

But I'm sure I've forgotten a couple. Odd though, nothing from Sinister or Arab Strap, though Stuart started Judy and the Dream of Horses, but plumped for something else instead.

Last time I saw them was 8 years ago and it was a very tense affair which culminated in Stuart throwing a strop, smashing up his guitar and storming off stage. Couldn't have been more different last night, there was a genuine cheeriness onstage (no doubt helped by Scotland putting one over on France 20-16 in the rugby) and the crowd was really up for it. Plenty of banter and chat between the Stevie/Sarah/Stuart and the audience. They sounded great and the string section really brought a richness to the whole thing. I'm just disappointed I'm not going again tonight.

yeah, i'm curious to hear how it is. if they don't spend 2/3 of the set pointlessly jamming on the same groove, progress will have been made.

(though i do seriously think they might be much better now. i remember being both psyched and surprised when i saw them first listed last spring because it was really rare that TJM played live, and the album hadn't come out. but i can think of at least 5 or 6 gigs that have happened since then in just NYC, so presumably they've figured out more of a show now.)

Well, no pointless jamming, thank christ....the show was actually pretty entertaining, the music was tight and most of the tracks were over before they started getting boring. It's too bad there were only about 50 people there, but the band didn't seem to mind/notice, which I guess was good. The bad news is that they decided it was a good idea to set up about 7 strobe lights aimed directly at the audience, so we all had to stare at our shoes to avoid being blinded - I actually had to leave halfway through their set, it was driving me nuts.

But the opening band was great! Duchess Says, I think they're from Montreal. Reminded me of Brainiac's spazzier moments....hopefully they'll be playing around here more, they got a great response.

Bottomless Pit last night at Schubas. Tim Midgett and Andy Cohen's (Silkworm) new band (with two other guys). I definitely thought about Michael Dahlquist and what it must be like for Tim and Andy to be on stage without him (I think this is like the 3rd time they've played out) but these guys can create pure magic when they lock in on a song. A different band, to be sure, but still really special (they don't sound like anybody else) and heartfelt (they just sound like themselves) with a huge upside.

Can't wait to see where they go.

Nah, I can't get you on that one (i wish!). The setlist from the previous show in Dublin was, more or less in order; Slow Graffiti, Seeing Other People, The State I Am In, The Wrong Girl, I Know Where The Summer Goes, Family Tree, Winter Wooskie, If Yr Feeling Sinister, I Don't Love Anyone, Paper Boat, Dog On Wheels, Is It Wicked Not to Care, Seymour Stein (blah!), Chickfactor (blahx2!), Photo Jenny,The Boy w/ the Arab Strap. Then Stuart threw a wobbler. By all accounts Simple Things plus two encore tracks were up next but we'll never know.
I was at the front for the Olympia show, and nearly got blinded by flying guitar splinters. So much so that at the end of the night the security dudes handed me a massive chunk of Stuart's guitar, which I still have.

Mission of Burma and Battles at Bowery on Friday.

Amazing show. I saw Battles 2 years ago, and liked the sound but thought the songs didn't go anywhere interesting. Now I'm thinking I must've caught them on an off night, because they were pretty damn great. David Bowie apparently thought so too. If there is ever a remake of Tron, they would be the perfect choice for the soundtrack.

I keep hearing Burma's new album called a hard listen, but if the new stuff they played is any indication, The Obliterati is bound to be the best post-reunion stuff they've done yet. Let's face it people, those 2 big singles aside, Burma was never a pop band. To my ears, the new stuff sounded much more akin to Vs. than nearly anything off of OnOffOn. And that, my friends, is a good thing indeed.

Couple of good ones last week - Regina Spektor in Whelan's. God, her voice is amazing. Very cutesy and coy without being overly affected. Audience LOVED her.
2hrs and 20 mins of Broken Social Scene at the Music Centre, very tolerable it was too. We got the cut price 11 strong version, the guys from Apostle of Hustle and Do Make Say Think were in the line-up. Really was a great gig, played most of the new album and You Forgot It In People. A few folk were putting it up there amongst best ever. I wouldn't go that far, but it was pretty cool (and very loud) seeing four and five guitars on the go at the same time. And not in the context of a charity gig finale.

Belle And Sebastian/New Pornos

Belle and Sebastian are true showmen. Funny, tight everythign you could want. The only thing I didn't like was that they didn't play too much from the new album, which is for sure a much better live than their older ones.

The new pornographers were the best band tonight. They were so damn perfect! A.C Newman is the funniest man on the planet. It was so cool to see him change his voice to match Bejar's. two thumbs up.

Were they supporting The Cribs in Birmingham? It was a short headline tour here, finishing on Friday.

Yes. I left after Jeff was on because I heard the Cribbs before and I thought they were shit, just more new wave white boy rock.

Jeff is really funny and writes great songs. Hardly anybody in the room was into it though. Their loss.:)

Belle & Sebastian last night at the Nokia...............just, wow. They played half of "If You're Feeling Sinister," lots of the new record, and a ton besides. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful concert.

The New Pornos, on the other hand.......not sure what was up with them. The sound was terrible where I was standing and no one in the band seemed to be into it at all. Next time I guess--

B+S were great last night too, a couple sloppy moments but prolly the best of the indoor shows i've seen them do. (i still think they sound best and seem most comfortable outside, but which says more about how amazing i thought they were at prospect park a few yrs ago than anything else.)

"your cover's blown" was fantastic! probably the best song of the night. oh but no "dress up in you" and no "seeing other people" ... did either come out on night #1?

the NP's were good, didn't match my first time seeing them though. the 'twin cinema' songs sounded great but not having neko on stage this time really made a difference.

"Dress Up in You," yes, "Seeing Other People," no.

The Sinister tunes they played were: "Stars of Track & Field," "Mayfly," "Fox in the Snow," "Judy & The Dream of Horses," and "Me & The Major."

Just came from seeing The Fiery Furnaces at the RISD Auditorium. about an 80 minute set, songs from all 5 releases, about evenly spread out. I was surprised at how rocknroll the set was. Jason Loewenstein on bass, Matthew only playing guitar, no keys, Eleanor on guitar maybe half the songs. The sound was huge and boomy in the auditorium, making it something of a mess, but it was pretty good. they played really straightforward, song after song with breaks, not the mishmash like at other shows.

A lot of the songs were totally rearranged, so I didn't realize what I was hearing till almost all the way through. It really sort of underscored how much better the EP and GB songs are, just as complete songs, because even with total rearranging, the song underneath shone through, unlike the BB, RMC and BT stuff, which saw Eleanor sort of reciting words in monotone over totally new jams underneath. The RMC material did sound awesome though. I didn't expect Matthew to be such a wanky guitar hero, and sometimes it was awesome, sometimes it was just a pain.

all in all, I'd give the show a B/B+, would go see 'em again, preferably in a club, though. The auditorium made it a bit claustrophobic, being stuck in a seat the whole time. I like moving around the room to get different vantage points.

kelley polar at the knitting factory tonight. meh. (unfortunately.) had great potential but my hopes were too high. i was told the drums/bass might be live but in the end it was just the strings and vocals, and the strings were mostly accents (tho awesome as an octet). too much was prerecorded. first-ever live show for him though, and he's not planning a tour, so i should cut some slack. so SXSW managed to top all my expectations - so many great bands and not too many crowd issues made for a really fantastic time. i'm already looking forward to next year. more to come later, but for now i just have to say that the happy flowers *rocked* my world last night. fucking awesome.

i realize i never gave more details on SXSW! quickly then, my faves other than the happy flowers:

lavender diamond (LA band, spectacular set ... see them if you can)
the evangelicals (from oklahoma, caught them completely by chance ... first album out in june)
afrirampo
helmet
tunng
the double (SO much better than my first time)
rhys chatham (7 gtrs! one played by thurston moore too)
asobi seksu (the new stuff totally trounces the old)
art brut (natch)
the spinto band (free kazoos!)
camera obscura (finally! i always missed them before)
brightblack morning light (v impressed - can't wait to hear a record)
the whigs
the archie bronson outfit
the gossip
tilly and the wall
the octopus project
parts and labor

main disappointments were howard hello and saturday looks good to me. SLGTM because it was just a four-piece ... no guest singers. howard hello had five ppl on stage but they pretty much blew. they said they never play live though so i'll cut em some slack ... i played 'don't drink his blood' when i got home and it still sounded great as ever.

We saw them after not-so-inspirational sets by others I won't mention and were blown away. I'd seen them before but the friends I was with had never even heard of them.

Friday night was all good:

Kelley Stoltz (David Cross walked past me in the crowd afterwards)
DMBQ
Jack Rose
Savage Republic

We played Saturday night, so I saw only the other bands on the bill but dug all of them:

IMA

unexpected gem of a show last night w/ animal collective and nix noltes. animal collective were really cool - often amazing, but it usually took a while for the songs to get there. just when you'd start get impatient, they'd start sampling themselves and it'd pick up. sort of reminded me of matmos live, in a way, in that you'd see them construct the songs live. didn't expect electronics + effects to be so big a part of it. also wasn't expecting to recognize much, but they played a bunch of 'feels' and a bit of 'sung tongs.'

nix noltes were awesome! nine people on stage, and the songs took advantage of every one of them. the horns were what really made it work though.

i went to night two. perhaps i should go to 16+ shows instead, because the 21+ crowd was sort of deadbeat. first half of the set was a little slow, but picked up steam thereafter. overall enjoyable, though i prefered seeing them last time around.

the thing that i liked most about the show, actually, was that the sound was great. probably the first time i've seen them where i can say that, thx to the bowery. i stayed in the middle of the crowd too, though ... i'm usually an up-front kinda guy but it was already really packed up there by the time i showed up.

So, two nights ago I went to a show. Here's the lowdown:

The Stabs

First band on the bill. Apparently Australian. Really bland, boring MC5 ripoff riffage, with the occasional annoying, go-nowhere 'freak-out' that, if my memory serves me correctly, involved shrieking. Nothing unexpected for an opening band I reckon, but always feel a little guilty for hating on opening bands from overseas. The drums sounded really cool. Maybe they'll end up doing something cooler in a couple years.

SomeguywhoplayedinBrianJonestownMassacre

To these ears, this was Gris Gris lite. Totally nondescript, which is fine for a little bit, but he was on stage too long. Boring. I've already forgotten.

Human Eye

I don't know what to make of this. Part of me was annoyed that they spent like 40 minutes lighting up large plaster eyes that served no real purpose, By this point, I was already exhasperated from the first two bands. When they finally got on stage, they were really, really, unpleasantly loud. The guitars sounded white noisey, the drummer was going full-on, almost metal-style, with the kickdrum, and the singers words were blurred with lots and lots of reverb. There was an overdriven keyboard in the mix somewhere there too. This was annoying at first, but actually sounded kind of cool when I plugged my ears. They reminded me a little of Monoshock.

Gris Gris

I liked them a lot. Tight, good with improv, personable. I actually haven't heard one of their albums in full, so it's kind of hard for me to appraise how well they performed the songs, but I liked. Did a campfire style, unamplified singalong for an encore.

Caught the Silver Jews Thursday night. As much as I like their records, their show was kind of boring and probably not worth the $15. David Berman's hot wife is fun to look at though and I was standing next to her sister and parents who happened to show up.

I was impressed with the opening band, Baby Teeth. They kind of remind me of the Scissor Sisters.... Really theatrical soul/pop music with three part harmonies to boot.

After a two-and-a-half week period of not going out (too tired or busy), I made it out to see Brass Castle on the 13th. Watching them play, it's not hard to think they're the just about best band on the planet. I told my husband a few months ago that we can never move from Atlanta so long as they are still together. The new, eponymous, second album is coming soon.

Last night, I got my head torn off by the fifth (and best) set I've seen yet from High on Fire. My neck is sore, sore, sore both from relentless headbanging and, of course, from getting my head torn off. Thank goodness for the crack team of surgeons they bring along on tour to repair the audience afterwards.

Oh yeah, the last show I hit was zZz (for the second time) and they got me dancin' (well, wigglin') like mad, as expected. They are definitely my favorite new band of 2005 (OK, sure, their debut 7" came out in 2003 but the album not 'til last year).

Next show coming up, Beggars' act Celebration (yea!) and three other bands I know nothing about (Tora Tora Tora, League of Evil and The Peakness).

Upcoming shows that have me most excited:

Faun Fables at the end of the month
Brass Castle CD release party on Cinco de Mayo
Hampton Grease Band reunion show on June 2
The Spinto Band in mid-June
Unpersons the day before my next birfday

The Spinto Band in mid-June

I went to see these guys last night, they're great live, aren't they? Most of the songs came off really well in a live setting, "Mountains" suffered from sloppy vocals, which was a disappointment but "Oh, Mandy" sounded really well in particular, as did "Direct to Helmet". And it's never a bad thing to have kazoos in stereo. They really bounce around a lot on stage. Kind of made me think of hobbits with tourette's.

Afterwards we headed across the street for a DFA night, well nominally at least - Tim Sweeney and Marcus Lambkin were spinning. Nothing exciting, just really good music typical of what you might expect from both. No feeling hard done by.

The previous night Tim Sweeney (seriously, does the guy permanently sport an ear-to-ear grin?) had been on the bill at another bash, this time with Filthy Dukes, Juan Maclean, Optimo and a couple of other djs and band I didn't recognise. Walked in to Filthy Dukes in the main room playing the Naum Gabo remix of Hot Chip's "Over and Over", which was indicative of their stomping set - familiar, but fun. Later on Optimo threw down a set which by the sound of things was quite similar to the one at Don Hills in Feb. Basically entirely techno, banger upon banger. The only track I recognised was that Carl Craig remix of Relevee, near the end. The set ended really abruptly though, a bit odd.

saw the Gris Gris and Brian Glaze last wednesday. Brian Glaze was pretty great, backed up by Gris Gris. His songs are a lot of fun, and he played them as well or better than on his record (one of my early '06 faves).

Gris Gris absolutely smoked. Every time I see them I'm blown away even more. Its really just ridiculous. Such an interesting approach to the whole thing, with the stripped down drums (not just the kit, but how he plays them too), the weird fragile "classical guitar about to feed back any second" foundation under most of it, lots of bowed bass, tripped out organs, vocal mic running through an amp instead of the PA. All these elements adding up to this fucking wild soundsystem, it really kills me every time. did anyone catch their shows in NYC this past weekend?

Saw Bonnie Prince Billy and Harem Scarem tonight - wow. Harem Scarem opened with a mixed trad set, mainly gaelic, but some breton as well. BPB kicked off his set with "A King at Night" accompanied by Alex Neilson on drums (this guy is as fine a drummer as I've in a long time), and the pair were joined by Harem Scarem for the remainder of the night, starting off with "A Minor Place". They brought such a warmth and richness to songs like "Arise, Therefore" and "I See a Darkness", and the four-part harmonies on "My Home is the Sea" and "Master and Everyone" were gorgeous almost beyond belief. I heard that some recordings were made in rehearsals for this tour, it'd be amazing if they see the light of day.

TERRASTOCK!

Major Stars killed it, totally raging. Less jams, more songs, but still fiery as shit. Bardo Pond was better than I'd ever seen them. I felt dizzy, and it wasn't just the beer. Paik had some technical difficulties, but rocked it, and their new record is their best yet. I lay on my back and blissed out to Charlambides, probably one of the highlights.

didn't go saturday, so no Damon & Naomi and Windy & Carl and others for me, but I did spend the day drinkin with buddies from Major Stars and others...

finally, Ghost really closed the whole thing off in perfect form. Grand piano and Timpani and gongs on stage with the rest of the setup, the bassman on upright the whole time, it was epic. Also, I'd never heard sound mixed that well in a room before. It was the perfect volume, no earplugs needed, lush, rich sound, just totally fucking beautiful...

all in all, a wonderful weekend.

the radiohead shows are gonna sell out crazy quick but good luck trying. they're going on sale during my exam on friday. as are tix for sonic youth at CBGB's (!). might need to take a 10-minute break during the exam to hit both of those.

Lukas
05-03-2006, 01:29 PM
the actual shows are in the middle of my exams, but that isn't going to stop me. I just realized that both radiohead and Bardo Pond are playing on the same day! I could try going to the other radiohead gig but I can't pull off missing two nights of needed study time.

I would see Bardo Pond over Radiohead. It'll probably be at a smaller place, so you'll get to feel the band more, and also if the last show I saw was any indication, their powers have only grown stronger and stronger.

I like Radiohead, but I can't imagine a big Enormodome experience would match the head-spinning heaviness of Bardo.

just my advice, if it comes down to a choice.

all the venues on this RH tour are actually small (for them) - max 3500 ppl, i think.

bardo pond's definitely great live though - i don't know their records but i saw them w/ dead meadow a while ago and really enjoyed it.

that's pretty cool, that they're playing someplace that small. they're playing a big outdoor pavilion/amphitheatre in Boston that ensures I'm not gonna waste my money going to see them there. The sound and visibility is bad, and its just a sort of uncomfortable place to be.

Fiona

Yeah, I passed on tickets for their show here in Marlay Park in August for the same reason. It's a lovely space, but Radiohead plus 40-odd thousand punters just doesn't work for me. Mind you last time I saw them was the full-on stadium experience with a crowd twice as big and it was pretty great. Being 10 years younger probably made the whole thing more bearable. I'm just a grumpy old woman now.

I have a feeling some of you might yell at me about missing the second half of this show (this was more MetroNorth's choice than mine), but last night I caught Times New Viking (awesome!) and Dan Melchior (took a while to warm up, but ultimately pretty good...nice to see he's still making music) on a bill that also included Endless Boogie and the Major Stars.

Last night I saw the killer bill of Oneida, Paik, Bright and BEARD (amazing boston band) at the MIT Steer Roast, which is an awesome outdoor party/show. Paik was just stunning in their volume and sheer HEAVINESS, and BEARD were brilliant. I hope they start releasing stuff and touring.

I went to see The Fiery Furnaces last night, it clashed with Black Mountain/Pink Mountaintops/Blood Meridian but wasn't let down by my choice. They really rocked the place out, it was LOUD. I'd say about half the tracks were from Bitter Tea, kind of mixed in quality. Whatever, though they attacked every single track in the set. No keys in this show which was disappointing, all about snarly vocals and trashy guitar. That is when Matthew wasn't playing at being Yngwie Malmsteen onstage.
Bloody hell though, the B&S fanboy who pogoed his way through their entire set elbowing and landing on the toes of all in a five foot radius, whilst simultaneously bellowing along to every tune, showed up and put on a repeat performance. It was kind of funny in a tiny venue, at least when you're out of the firing line.

Last weekend caught The Boy Least Likely To supported by BC Camplight and We Show Up On Radar. We Show Up On Radar - waaaay too twee for me, lyrics about woodland animals having sporting events at night had us cracking up though. BC Camplight hadn't heard before, I thought they were okay, pop songs in a Ben Folds vein. The Boy Least Likely to were really enjoyable, a relaxed and fun kind of night that had the room swinging and bopping merrily along.

very easily possible. They messed up songs gracelessly, jammed aimlessly for too long, the energy was crappy, all in all, a bad set. I wasn't the only one bummed out. I left halfway through cos I couldn't listen anymore. People who stayed for the whole thing said it didn't get better.

Went to the Stills/Royal Mountain Band show tonight.

RMB were a complete CCR ripoff band. Stills were impressive, but the lighting sucked ass. Someone needs to replace whoever was in charge tonight, because that person had no idea what he/she was doing.

The thing with the Stills is that in time I think they will put out some nice albums, but right now they aren't that special at all. A band like The Stills has to find a certain path and take it without veering off, because they don't have the talent to pull it off otherwise.

It was still nice to see a hometown band though.

I can't wait for my band to start playing some shows. *Crossing fingers*

saw alice in chains tonight, who totally rocked! new singer was surprisingly good - not sure what his deal was before. it was funny, they played the bowery ballroom (which is small) but still brought the rock star show ... biggest drum riser i've ever seen in there. but more than anything else, they just seemed really happy to be playing. until this afternoon, it had been years since i'd listened to them, but the show was still a blast. earplugs very necessary.

rye coalition opened up ... they're one of those bands i'd been curious to see for like 7 or 8 years now (since 'the lipstick game') but it never happened. they were good though, i'd see 'em again.

Yup, Art Brut was a blast!

So happy I was able to catch them on this mini-tour. They seem to be having a great time, and it comes through with their presentation.

New stuff I heard sounded great... Eddie's one-liners were classic... "Our heavy-metal guitarist will now awe you with a vulger display of power"

I was expecting maybe a more sloppy performance-- but they were tight, and killed right from the start!

Robocop Kraus was just okay for me-- i was expecting a bit more after all the positive reviews here ...*wink*

We-el, tino, they are playing a few east coast shows, aren't they? It would be entirely worth your while driving down to nyc - and catch the 70-drumkit-monster-installation as well. Or do the two shows clash with a significant forthcoming event?!

A few folk last night had travelled from abroad to be at the show - other than ATP and another festival, think the only shows they were doing were London and Berlin.

If we could still post attachments, I'd put up a couple of photos I took which were alright considering it was with my mobile...

Yeah, I'm fully aware, unfortunately, of the Philadelphia show they're playing and the two Deitch Gallery (NYC) shows as well, but they're precariously close to my wedding, which I guess would count as a "significant forthcoming event". Normally I'm a pretty freewheeling guy, but the next three weeks (getting married on June 17th) are not really flexible enough to do the 5 hour (NYC) or 7+ hour (Phila) drives necessary to see them...

so it goes..

Whew, after MUCH research I found it. This software is getting way too feature-rich for its own good. (And we're not even on the latest version of vB.)

Essentially, uploading attachments was allowed for all registered users EXCEPT on the General Topics bulletin board. When I finally drilled down to this level of fine detail, I found it.

You should now see attachment boxes in the Reply To and New Thread entry forms in General Topics. (They should always been available in the New and Upcoming Releases forums.)

Silver Lining?: DVD? I think there were as many as four people with big ole' cameras filming the show starting with Boris. I'm hoping a DVD release will be available on some format.

Obviously, most people won't be able to turn up the volume to the point where their entire bodies are shaking for 1.5h+, butttt it would still be cool.

Just got home from seeing the Hampton Grease Band (http://hamptongreaseband.com/). I was grinning like an idiot and bouncing around the whole time (they played for around an hour and 15 minutes followed by 30 minutes of encore!). They're one of those bands I thought I'd never see since their sole album, Music to Eat, was released in '71 and their last performance was in '73 but they decided to pull it together for a reunion after guitarist Harold Kelling sadly passed away a few months ago (Bob Elsey of The Swimming Pool Q's (http://www.swimmingpoolqs.com) did a great job of filling in for him. The other guitarist, Glenn Phillips, is one of the best I have ever seen and I've seen plenty of 'em in 30 years of concert going. Musically, they're like a cross between The Mothers of Invention, The Allman Brothers (who they predate, BTW) and early Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band. Their album was allegedly the second worst selling record in the history of Columbia Records. I got it when it was reissued on CD a decade ago but it's once again OOP, unfortunately.

Best show of the year, hands down!

I'm seeing The Swimming Pool Q's for the first time on Sunday, and after seeing Bob tonight, I'm definitely looking forward to it! I've never heard them but I know they were one of Atlanta's early punk/new wave bands; they formed in '78 and have been active on-and-off ever since.

yeah, if any NY MBBers want to hop over, i'll definitely be there for matmos, steve reich, alarm will sound, and the 100-tuba orchestra led by anthony braxton (?!!?!). PM me and we can exchange cell phone numbers.

vesper, I don't know those acts, but I know OM so I think you're right about me being interested! maybe I'll check that out, I don't have anymore plans until the end of the month, as far as show-going is concerned.

Completely missed Jeff Lewis last night because of the incompetence of the Staten Island Ferry to do it's job, and I didn't get off the island until eight 'o clock.

Went to Growing/Thrones show at Cakeshop. That was fucking loud. Growing is amazing. Couldn't hear Preston's vocals much though.

Get off the Island man. Whitehall is the dullest part of Manhattan at 3am when you have to wait an hour to catch the next ferry. Why there isn't a monorail from St. George to downtown at this point i'll never know.

I heard White Magic is playing Cake Shop in a couple of weeks but i'm not sure...

i'm actually going to skip the Cake Shop show to see them the next night at a venue down the block from my apartment. if yr still interested, debaser, send me a message.

unfortunately, Matmos only played two songs (actually one of the longest sets), an original composition with So Percussion called/referred to as "aluminum song" and "rag for william s. burroughs." "burroughs" actually didn't have the "rag" part so much, but they expanded the final hand drum section for another 7 minutes or so. it was far and away the best part of the day.

i also didn't catch Alarm Will Sound. they were the very last to go on (11ish), and i only stayed until 9:30 or so. i had already been there for a good 7+ hours and didn't know if i'd have enough energy to really appreciate them or to stand the subway ride back to brooklyn. at some point i'll check them out, but Bang on a Can was not the day.

one complaint: the sight-lines in the winter garden are a pain in the ass. i could not find a good place to sit or stand the whole time i was there. all the moving around certainly didn't help my energy level.

Ooh, I didn't see this until now, but I wound up skipping that show too. I had gone to see Japanther the night before, and I think I'm going to take a break from shows till Erase Errata at the end of the month.

I need to focus on finding a way to make money, instead of just spending it.

R A D I O H E A D! put on a show that will never be topped unless there is a pavement reunion. That was the most awesome experience of my entire life, my mind has been blown! Having seats is such a difference, because you really have your personal space and standing up isn't a hassle at all. I feel bad for the person standing behind me, they probably didn't have one cosant sight path the enitre night, I was doing some major head spinning.

P.S new songs are absolutely stunning and groovy.

seeing the rapture tonight.

I saw them back in '03 when The Jicks Opened for them. This one was even better if that is possible.

The Black Keys played only 4 songs I think, which was the only negative aspect of the night.

The four songs did kick ass though, so it wasn't all bad.
They are really the only ones carrying Hendrix's legacy these days.

No disrespect or nothin, but that seems like a preposterous statement.

How are The Black Keys, "the only ones carrying Hendrix's legacy these days," Lukas?

Lukas

I really don't hear any other bands that are worthy of that title IMHO. Dead Meadow in their really early stuff were somewhat reminiscent of Hendrix, but other than that...

If there are some good recoms then please correct my preposterous statement.

well, lets start from the other direction. Other than playing bluesy rock, how are the Black Keys even vaguely *like* hendrix? Lots of bands play solos...

Tino man, don't tell me The Black Keys aren't heavily Hendrix influenced. Even the vocals recall him

They are really the only ones carrying Hendrix's legacy these days.

My perception of what they do has always been closer to like an early Rolling Stones type vibe. You have to remember that Hendrix may have been bluesy but he included other influenmces too, like psychedlic rock and noise making.

Id say that they're pretty individual though.:)

Would the next step up from drugs be mental if I considered the black keys better than Hendrix?

Which I don't ;)

but the issue isn't whether or not the Black Keys are influenced by Hendrix, but whether or not they carry his legacy (which was yr original claim!).

Would the next step up from drugs be mental if I considered the black keys better than Hendrix? There are excellent treatment facilities for young people who think The Black Keys are better than Jimi Hendrix.

To figure that out you first have to figure out exactly what Hendrix's legacy was. If it was bringing the guitar to the forefront of music I don't think they do that even though Dan is a rad player.:)

I would have to disagree with you

I just think that in their music theres enough there thats great as to make the guitar just another part of the music. I think with Hendrix it was all about the guitar 'cause he wasnt much of a lyricist.

NOTE - That isnt intended as a slight against Jimi. If you want great words listen to Dylan and if you want titanic riffing ala "Voodoo Chile" listen to Hendrix.:)
