I guess Chan is hosting the show Subterranean on MTV2 this weekend, at midnight Sunday night. Too bad I don't get that channel.

The new video, for "Living Proof", directed by Harmony Korine (Kids, Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy) will also debut on the show. And it's amazing.

So who gets this channel and has a report for us? And who was able to copy it to DVD to send to me? I can make copies for others.

I TiVoed it and just got done watching it. The most surprising thing to me was the video for "Great Waves" by Dirty Three which was quite incredible, and featured a shadowy face of Chan fading in and out as she sang. Even more surprising was that this video was more focused in on Chan than her own video was. As for her video, if you've ever wanted to see Chan carrying a cross around a running track, this will be your chance. Honestly, I think the video was an extension of Chan's desire to obscure herself as much as possible, and it does accomplish that for better or for worse.
There were 4 interview segments on the show, they were all quite funny and sweet. The interviewer presented her a cupcake at the end as a belated birthday present, and she seemed to think that was funny and unexpected.

This all sound very interesting. Does this show air in the UK? The title sounds familer. I guess it'll be late night MTV2 if not.

Thanks for the link, Alex. I just watched the video for Living Proof on the Subterranean website. I like the song, but the video really sucks! All of that religious and racial imagery is heavy-handed, stupid and pretentious, and has nothing to do with the song. Harmony Korine is an idiot. Chan made a mistake when she teamed with him.

I don't think its that heavy-handed. I find the video more intriguing than pretentious. Frankly Chan doing a more political based video is far more interesting than anything out there right now. If this video was actually shown on actual MTV and not MTV 2, then it may have a better impact.

A better impact? What kind of impact is it supposed to have?

Well, usually art can have a better impact if seen by more people. thus if it was shown on mtv, then more people would be able to see it. I'm not proclaiming this thing as the almighty or anything. I just am glad someone made something other than a visual play or a dance video; a work that taps into something that's going on. And I think it is kinda funny seeing Chan running around a track with a giant cross on her back. It seems like she's up for anything--and we all thought she was a slacker cry baby.
I give her a thumbs up for this one.
my own interpretation of the video is that it points out (in a dark humor sort of way) that women in both christian & muslim societies have similar religious burdens & that they are in the same race....
That of course is a pretty simplified explanation & who knows what Harmony meant it to mean.. if anything...I'm not his biggest fan but making fun of religion is something doesn't bother me either way.. and most video concepts in general are pretty played out by now..

I think this video has more to do with what Harmony is about (shock, titillation, pushing buttons) than what Chan is about. Being a Cat Power fan and not a Harmony Korine fan, that was disappointing to me.

For what it's worth, I loved the video - sleek, mysterious, using provocative imagery in a non-political way (there is no possible political point to take home), totally unpredictable take on the lyrics, Chan as triumphing martyr, "I am your living proof!"
Gorgeous visuals as well.

Does anybody have a dvd of the episode. Im in the UK but I have a multi-region dvd player so I can play the American ones too. I don't have sky tv or anything like that so I wont be able to see it when its shown in the UK. Would anybody in America be willing to copy it for me or anybody in the Uk be willing to tape/copy it for me when its shown over here?
Thankyou.

well, they usually have them up on mtv2.com after they air.
However, if you have a mac, like I do, you will not be able to watch the videos on the site.
