Ok it's fair to say Chan has created a new sound for herself on this LP. It's the most polished produchion wise and i've never heard her sing so loosely. It's not as devise as You Are Free and not as heart Wraching What Would the Communtiy think? But it has soul, it has funk and grove. Like pretty much all her records it has a timeless element to and it will stand up in 20 or 30 years time. I also beleave it'll get better with every listern. I've probley heard YAF about 30 times so won't be happy until i hear this about 40.
The opener is a real warm track and smacks with the familer sound which make you glad Cat Powers around. It's much simply then some other songs from other LP's but it's a nice interduchion. It seems at this stage that Cat Power is somewhat of a diva in the best sort of sense. Lived in Bars will become a hallmark track and maybe one of the only derect links to her past from a lyric standpoint. Willie is a R'n'B's superstars dream. Given space to breath as a ballad. Such a contrast to the ten minute pioalo version at All Tomorrows Parties a couple of years back, or even the three minute version i heard at a live show last year.
One of Cat Powers great plesures is how her tracks stay with you Minutes, Hours even days after hearing them. The Moon is a prime example. It's simple and sweet in a childlike way but still has the power to sweep you off your feet. It's one of the true times when she uses a voice in a complete form. In my opanion that is. And thats the thing at this point i feel somewhat unsatisfated but i'm in love and want to hear it more. The Greatest may never completly satisfare me but thats ok it's a beautiful thing. Love and Communication is a fine groovey end to the preceedings.
