I had this song on a Merge sampler that i passed on to someone else, who now swears that the song does not exist on the sampler. :|
it's an older, quieter, longer and sweeter sounding version... and it's driving me crazy that i can't find it anywhere. is a single of it available or was it ever only on that sampler?
thanks.t

I think the version you seek is the CD included with the Speaking for Trees DVD... it has just one 18-minute song on it: "Willie Deadwilder". It's fantastic.

I'm not sure she doesn't play it as part of the main concert(it's not a concert but you get what i mean) if it's a bous track then it's not on the UK version i saw. I've heard it live and the new version on the greatest so i'm not sure i've been much help sorry!

hmmm interesting... the Speaking for Trees DVD I have (here in USA) includes a bonus CD with the original version of Willie Deadwilder on it (actually just that one song).
Here's a link to a description of it and one of many places to purchase it:

Willie Deadwilder is on all versions of the dvd, I think (on a separate disc, that is).

Its on a separate CD. Im from the UK and have it so its on the UK version and (I assume) all versions.
Maybe you were thinking of a Matador sampler. There was a sampler that had an edit of "Willie Deadwilder" on it. It was distributed w/copies of Spin Magazine and lots of them were given away to record stores as well.

Uh, not really.
The DVD Speaking For Trees comes with a CD as well. There is one track on the CD, the 18 + minute version of "Willie Deadwilder." The version in question here was an edited version of that same performance that ended up on a promotional sampler that was sent to record stores and given away.

I stand corrected. You still could've made yourself a bit cleaner it seem like you meant it was a completely different release. It wasn't on the one my friend has i guess meaning that it only applys to people who got theres early. I'm sure thats right, i mean i remember the bonus song being very long but it sounded northing like Willie, lyric or sound wise but i'll check again.
Ok, I will try to be as "clean" as possible here.
OLE-628-9 Cat Power Speaking For Trees DVD comes with a bonus CD. That CD has one track. An eighteen + minute version of "Willie Deadwilder." This is an earlier recording of the same song that is on The Greatest. The bonus CD comes with all copies of Speaking For Trees.
The specific track that was in question orginally on this thread was an edit of the Speaking For Trees version of "Willie Deadwilder."
Hope that makes sense.
