IT Can be a band or solo singer, you could even suggust a filmmaker or actor you feel deserves more exposure. It can apply to any kind of art.
I really love the band Pram, their sound the singers voice it's very magical and soulful. The kind of music i could lose myself to.
Yo La Tengo i think should be more covered, if you think in the way of Pavement, the Flaming Lips etc they should get more press.

Until every press outlet decides that he's the best thing happening to music now, I decree Greg Ashley of The Gris Gris / The Mirrors deserves way more props than he gets (at least around my busted part of town).

Justin Vollmar.

Tracy Chellvar(i know thats probley not how you spell the last name) one of the best novalists around. She handles her stories and charators so skillfully. It's a shame that Girl With a Pearl Earing is the only novel of hers to get proper mainstream attention. So to me she's underratted.

Justin Vollmar.
hmm, interesting choice. I saw him perform for the first time last year opening for Antony and the Johnsons. It was paradoxically one of the most awful and most interesting performances I've probably seen.

Most definately Jeffrey Lewis. His performances are amazing. Much more than just music/band but in a lot of ways it's just really incredibly impressive.

He is just so great live and his records are just so raw. Live shows- real great crowd interaction and a sense of humour. I have to thank that wise old man John Peel for airing a session by him. Thats how I first heard Jeff.

If you haven't seen him live yet, it's hard to explain. It was just him playing what seemed to be random noise on his guitar while occasionally throwing in some unintelligible and bizzare lyrics in an awkwardly hushed and tone-deaf voice. Meanwhile, in a separate room and not visible to the audience, some other dude was belting out feedback and distortion on his guitar. All this, in combination with the fact that Vollmar looks like one of the most average, normal looking midwestern dudes I've ever seen, made for a very, uh......interesting show. The whole time I was thinking, "Boy, this is just terrible, but I can't stop watching."

I agree about Jefferey Lewis i have great momories of first hearing him on John Peel. I remember his live set on Peelies show it went on for ever! Like his versions of Part time Punks and the Morden Age too.

I remember hearing about him and the person who runs Blue Sanct Records going on tour and doing a noise collaboration kind of thing, I'm wondering if it was that and not Justin Vollmar doing his solo thing.

Could be. I saw him again opening for another local band called Odawas and he sounded different, with a full backing band and everything. I think he tends to be pretty eclectic, as far as live performances go.

For actresses I would say Kathy Buerke and Sara Gilbert. For actors I would say Ken Stott and Ray Winstone.
Keith

I like Sara gilbert as a chioce she should be in more films. Another Sara Sarah Polly is under valued too i think. Can't agree about Ray Winstone.

She's never in anything though. They're wasting her talent.
Can't agree about Ray Winstone.
Even though he does get a lot of exposure, I still think its not enough considering what he did in Nil By Mouth (and I think Kathy Buerke actually steals the show from him so go figure).:)
Keith
02-10-2006, 08:23 AM
Your right Nil by mouth is a very hard hitting film, find the end a little depressing as i don't understand how the Ray Winstone charactor is just let back into the familys life as if northing ever happened. Very powerful and well performed though.
I suggest Caroline Thompson co-screen writer of Tim Burtons. Although Burton is such a uniqe film making he gets the attention he deserves whereas i think she should get so much more. I went to see the musical version of Edward Scissorhands last month, although it had problems espically in the first act it was just great to see that vison put on stage. There was some lovely ideas too, a good night out all in all.

After some thought, I think I'll go with Dwight Twilley and Kim Salmon.
Sure, Dwight has had a couple of hit singles ("I'm on Fire" in 1975 and "Girls" several years later) but he's still releasing great music to this day and I never see anything in print or on-line about him.
Kim's work with the Scientists is well documented but his post-S career is widely ignored. Since the late-80s demise of that band, he's released six albums under the Kim Salmon & The Surrealists moniker, one as Kim Salmon & The Business, one as part of the group <antenna> (with Dave Faulkner of The Hoodoo Gurus), a few with the Beasts of Bourbon and two solo albums yet it's almost as if none of them ever existed. Most of them are already out of print and I'm not sure if I've ever seen even a review of any of them. He's also got a new album out with his country duo Darling Downs but I've yet to snag that one.
As for the guy from Gris Gris, they have, what?, two albums out? I'd say a bit more longevity is in order before declaring someone a "great of our time."
Kim Salmon totally rules, and I agree, he's totally underrated.

again, as with the David Byrne example, I wonder whether you people know what "underrated" means. Ween have an enormous following, and there's tons of dudes with huge boners over everything they touch.
Just cos your friends don't appreciate them like you do doesn't make them underrated.

They followed that with "Wild Wild Life" by Talking Heads.
Then again, I've also heard The Fall, Minutemen and the New York Dolls on that station (albeit years ago), so I guess I can't complain too much.

Peter Jefferies. Very important in my opinion not just for his actual music but the influence he has had on quiet lo-fi music.

MOONPIX Is on a roll it would seem. I haven't seen it yet but i can't beleave Claire Danes is made to look so silly as Steve Martains toy in Shop Girl(and ofcouse he wrote it) he deserves a SLAP!

Have you read the book? I liked the film partly because it stuck very close to the noval which is a classic i think. Christian Bales performance in it is really good. At one point Brad Pitt was in line for the role and David Cronerberg to direct, that would have been interesting.

Wreckless Eric
Since 1977 or so, Eric has released six albums, an EP and numerous singles under the Wreckless Eric name.
He's also released and album and single with Captains of Industry
Two albums and a single with The Len Bright Combo
An album and a single with The Hitsville House Band
And an EP under his Christian name, Eric Goulden
He's also written a book, A Dysfunctional Success, which can be purchased direct from him or through Amazon.com. I've got it but haven't read it yet; however, he read a short excerpt when I saw him last month and it was well-written and quite funny.
All of the above have been wonderful, yet 30 years on he's still an opening act a good deal of the time. Life's not fair.
He's also done some recording with Clay Harper and The Ottoman Empire (featuring murdered journalist Daniel Pearl) but I've not heard that stuff . . . yet.
Eric's very entertaining website: www.WrecklessEric.com
Odd Trivia: His first single, "Whole Wide World," was covered by The Monkees on their Pool It! album.

Dylan Moran, who won the Perrier Award in Edinburgh '96, created, writes and co-stars in hit tv series "Black Books", played the lead in BBC2's "How Do You Want Me?", had a lead role in Michael Winterbottom's "A Cock and Bull Story" and has written for The Irish Times? I suppose his time has yet to come. Wouldn't mind him getting more exposure though *cough*.

I think for his standup though he is underexposed. People who don't follow comedy wouldnt know he won the Perrier Award. I think he deserves some more as a standup performer.
