Has anybody read this yet? What a load of bollocks. Mr Kelley seems to be implying that our Chan has been bullshitting us all for the last 14 or so years and that its all just an act. Id like to hear what you lot think about this.
My personal feeling is that simply because Chan isnt the 'crazy woman' who the press have been portraying her as they don't like the idea that in reality she's perfectly capable of looking after herself and a strong person because it goes against the image of her that theyve been perpetrating. The press fell in love with this fake idea of somebody who's crazy and can't tie their own shoes but it was they who created that image for themselves and not Chan. They only have themselves to blame. They don't give a shit about her really and would like to imagine that she's suicidal everyday just because it would look better in print. Its the same reason they always say Nick Drake killed himself. Its sounds better.
The press are manipulative bastards.

I didnt like the article either. I thought it was boring and repetitive. I was really disapointed because the article harp did in 03 is my favorite cat power interveiw/article ever.
I don't think they disliked the idea of chan being perfectly normal. I thought it was the other way around. That the fans wouldnt like the idea of her being "normal". It was like "hey guess what everything you've ever thought about chan is WRONG."...even though just about every article/interview about her mentions how sad..crazy..unstable..whatever..she is.

I don't get it. the article was interesting, and very flattering as a whole and people need to chill out. not every sentence has to be precious and sycophantic.

I agree, the tone of the it put me off. But in it's defence so of it should've been taking with a grain of salt. I think the comment Moonpix picked up on was ment to be tonqe in cheek, of couse i could be wrong. It's hard because i think the press either want to make a big story out of some one like Cat Power or they try too hard to get her and be her friend almost to the point of pretending.

Well put it like this, Ive seen her live three times and she's never had any trouble. After what Id read in articles I assumed she was having problems every night. False images.

No she does not have probelms every night for sure. It's a mixture depending her mood. For example at ATP's two years back she played both weekends and at one she broke down, spat at the cword and did not play a single song, whereas the next weekend she was fine and proformed an amazing set of songs. She was also great when i saw her at the Queen Elizabeth last April. But i don't understand how people can critisize her for this. It's like a nature reaction, she's clearly not doing it on purpose. Besides the more shy and diffcult people are aways the coolist.

I don't think you can be a true artist if you're easy. :)

I liked the article, because I learned a lot of things about chan and here career I didn't know. Of course the journalist is using this old cliché about chan, but I decided to not focus on that when I read.
Oh and I didn't know you could rent a place in New York for 190$! Maybe I should move there! ;)
If anyone has seen other articles online, feel free to post the link on the forum. It'd be cool!

I doubnt very much that you could get an apartment in New York for $190 if you moved there now. I really wanted to leave the UK and go to live there myself but after doing my research I discovered that you can't get anything for less than $500 a month (and those are very rare). From what Ive read about it, when Chan moved there New York was a decaying city (high crime rate, drugs etc) and so it was affordable. Since then its undergone much gentrification and so lots of people had to leave because the rents went through the roof.
New York's bohemian/artist friendly reputation is long gone now.:(

So you saw Cat Power play with Patti Smith MoonPix that would have been a dream come true for me. I was going but could'nt sort the date out with my friends, but will did watch speaking for trees on the that day and just thought about the live performance as we watched. Didn't you find all those people moving about during Chan's set at the Queen Elizabeth really annoying, hope things are different on the 4th.

The people were generally very well behaved and stayed still. The real dream for me came true when I met her after that show. She's really great, totally unselfish (we talked for like half hour untill 12:00 at night and she didnt care one little bit even though she had to be up to catch a plane to Paris the next day). She works so hard. :) :) :) :)
The show was great too. She came on first and played like six songs and then Kevin and Patti did this really long reading of The Coral Sea with him making weird guitar noises . After that Chan came back on and played amazing piano while Patti was singing. :)

Oh god this concert looks like a dream team gig! I wish I was there! I saw Patti several times, one time I was in the first rank in front of her... It was mindblowing!

I forgot to say that the Kevin was Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine fame, not a band I particuarly like (though I like Loveless).
I only went to see Chan anyway.:)
