I will defend this new album and sound to the death. Chan can be happy and sad. It is just dreadful to hear from people when they say I like it when she is sad. People! be open-minded god damn it! I think some people only know her from You ARE Free, and it gets annoying how highly they regard that album and they don't even know her other stuff.
that is all

To my ears Chan's music has been getting progressively happier her whole life so I don't really get why people are surprised about the new sound.

I don't think people claim the new sound to be too happy just that maybe it's more easiy on the ear and may appeal more to a wider group of people. But to me she was never depressing but very moving to listern to. It is very sad music a lot of the time, it's a think of breaty aswell. You are Free is a great Album and should be taken as such, same goes for The Greatest and probley all her work.

For me its uplifting and life affirming/enhancing. That doesnt mean it sounds happy and music doesnt have to sound happy to uplift. Its the one artist where every time I listen to it Im either in tears through sheer joy or you just can't wipe the smile off my face.
She gives me hope and thats very important (especially when you're 20 and you havent found your place in the world yet). :)

A friend once said she sounds like shes got the waight of the world on her when she sings, and also that there's too many Cat Power gigs in the world to be sad. She said this to cheer me up when i was down, what a friend she is.

I also ask this, is this sound really so different?
If you go back to What Would the Community think, you can see some traces of the greatest on there.
yes like pedal steel on "Taking People"...
yes like pedal steel on "Taking People"...
There was pedal steel on What Would The Community Think
yes it was also recorded in Memphis....at the late Easley studio (burned down last year) in fact Doug Easley himself played the pedal steel on that track

it seems that the greatest doesn't need to be defended. it is pretty much universally loved so far, and the only people not feelin' it are nerds that keep referencing "darling said sir" and "rockets"

chan is an artist
on the level of dylan and young
she creates what she needs
and has only just begun
chan will return to her roots - she is too powerful an artist and musician not to. don't worry.
whatever she needs and wants to persue is fine with me.
what would the community think and moonpix are undoubtably my favorites, but i sure don't complain about myra lee and the others - the chick is on it.

As far as Im concerned truly great art doesnt need defending.
John Peel said that he wouldnt be able to tell if the Fall ever made a mistake, for him all hey have to do is show up.
Thats how I feel about Chan. As long as she's happy doing what she's doing isnt that enough?

I can't even think of not likeing a Cat Power record. I've listerned to the Greatest about six times now and it will be on my walkman more and more in the coming months i'm sure. Yes i suppose it has elements of What would... but to me it's a very different record and i bet the next one will be too. I don't think it needs defending but it is good to decuss these things.
