We regret to announce that Cat Power's entire US tour has been canceled due to health reasons. Out of respect for Chan's privacy, we can't give more detailed information, but we hope and assume that you'll respect her privacy during this time as well.

There will be information about refunds available imminently, and the tour will be rescheduled as soon as possible.

Chan is a good friend and a dear member of the Matador family, and when we have news about future performances, we'll be certain to share it with you here.

I didnt buy tickets for the show in my area due it being a general admisson type seating, which I didnt wanna fool with, and I was starting to regret it, but now reading this Im glad I didnt, I used to work for Ticketmaster and getting refunds back from them sucks.

I tried getting a refund from TicketMaster today. They told me I have to write VOID on the tickets and mail them back (preferably by registered mail) and then they would refund me, minus a fee (go figure). Why do I have to write void on tickets that aren't good any way? Has anyone else tried refunding these yet?

Well, it sucks to hear about Chan. I had a hotel room booked to say the night of the show, and now i'm losing $25 for cancelling it. Matador should send me some free records, eh?

Just try and read the following piece of filthy piss-soaked "journalism" without vomiting:

"Cat's live shows have been notoriously checkered: She's been known to walk off stage in the middle of a set, start spontaneously weeping, and Power's between-set banter is often incoherent rambling. The post goes on to say that there will be info about refunds announced shortly and that Power hopes to reschedule the tour dates as soon as possible"

Leaving aside concerns about the usual lazy journalistic focus on tortured artist anecdotes, which are getting about as boring as references to Spin being the rock magazine progeny of its founders filthy porno lucre, there are some questions that immediately spring to mind.

Like:

I'm sorry, is this Spin idiot really referring to Cat Power as alternately just "cat" and just "power?" Does this terrible mangling of language really make it sound as if a usually solo act is some kind of mindnumbing duo, a strung out Captain & Tennile?

The only answer that isn't painfully, and I do mean painfully, self evident is whether or not this joker is worse than the people that used to go around talking about "Spencer Blues."

I'm not making it up,
read it for yourself:

Best wishes to Chan, hope it's nothing too serious and she get's over it soon, there I was moaning that there were no Dublin gigs booked, puts it all in perspective her health far more important than anything else. Again, hope she's back on her feet in no time.

some kind of mindnumbing duo, a strung out Captain & Tennile? Matador should sign that!

why wouldn't her european dates be cancelled as well? the us dates and sxsw bookend the tour across the pond so if it were health related how does she get better and then sick again? is she planning for a relapse? awesome

Patrick

SXSW is canceled as well.

We'll have news on the European dates as soon as possible.

To everyone: we know that it's frustrating and difficult to plan ahead for a special show like this, particularly one that involves special travel and a pricey ticket for which Ticketmaster won't even give you a full refund. Believe me when I say that Matador is out costs here as well, not to mention Chan herself and pretty much everyone involved in the tour.

However when someone's health is involved it's not wise to gamble. And in this case gambling was not even an option.

Neither we nor Chan are in a position to offer anyone any money or compensation for this. Right now our thoughts are focused on Chan regaining her health. I do recommend - and I know big corporations don't care - emphasizing that if you to cancel hotel rooms etc. it's due to someone's health and perhaps this will (it should) provoke some sympathy.

Once again, we're sorry that this had to happen this way, but it's the best for Chan, everyone around her and ultimately, you, her fans, that she really take the time to take care of herself and really make sure that she's completely recovered before she starts working again.

We do hope to have this tour rescheduled at some point in the not-too-distant future. In the meantime, please, everyone, have patience.

Best,
Patrick

Reschedule the tour when she's feeling better, send a backstage pass my way for next time she is in Chicago and we'll call it even.

I have never been more frustrated at Ticketmaster in my entire life. I don't think I'm even going to get back the face value of the tickets. So far, Cat Power has cost me about $50.

I don't mean to be so selfish and I hope Chan feels well soon.

So far, Cat Power has cost me about $50.

I may very well have lost money too mate (personnaly I don't see why the Barbican show will happen if SXSW is cancelled) but to be honest its not the main thing on my mind. The fact that nobody can say what it is makes me even more anxious and nervous and Im just hoping that it isnt something REALLY serious that means she won't ever be healthy again.

Stop being so bloody selfish. This is somebodys health we're talking about. What exactly do you want her to do? Show up sick as dog just so you can have your moneys worth?

If you really want to talk about money look at all the money Chan's going to lose.

We can now confirm that the London (March 4) and Paris (March 8) Cat Power performances are regretfully cancelled in line with the US dates.

Refunds can be gained from the point of purchase.

We wish Chan well and look forward to her visits in the future.

Thanks for the confirmation Mike - I know the venues will be able to confirm but are the Europe dates to be rescheduled or is it refunds only. I'm happy to hold on to my tickets if reschedulement is likely but the cash would also be a bonus right now ha!

Cheers again mate

I am afraid it is a refund situation rather than a postponement. It is everybodies desire that Cat Power will do shows here at some stage but it is too early be able to make future dates thus we have to cancel rather than postpone.

Lovely stuff - thanks again for the info!

I look forward to seeing her again at some point in the future then and it also means I can make plans to travel up north that weekend and see my girlfriend with £20 in my pocket!

Cheers

Cat Power day March 4 - a fine idea.

Keith

More and friend were talking about it yesterday and we plan leaving no stone unturn. As well as playing as much of her music in different formats as possible(the LP's in order of release) a fine bottle of Red Wine will be in order(Hopefully from Chan's native state) but we will also wair southen looking shirts. This should be a world wide thing, ofcouse in other countries it will be on a different date.

While I am extremely sad to hear of the tour cancellation, I was wondering if anyone knew if her show at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival has been cancelled because Bonnaroo has not mentioned anything of that nature?

Patrick

To date no decision has been made about Bonnaroo.

Awwwwww the tour is cancelled!!
I arranged a surprise-present for my boyfriend's birthday and bought concerttickets for Catpower in Barbican, London. (So the European tourdates are indeed cancelled, what a whitty, whitty remark, Chan feeling better and planning to get sick again)
Also got planetickets (we live in Holland) and got a hotel booked...
We're still going though, just no lovely Catpower!
Chan, i hope it's nothing too serious and that you get better real soon!
Lots of love!

I didn't have tickets for any of the shows, but I've been a fan for a while and wanted to just add my wishes and hopes for Chan, that she can deal with whatever this is in good time.

I'll be celebrating Cat Power day on the 4th too - that's a great idea. I've set up a little Flickr group (http://www.flickr.com/groups/21515666@N00/) where we can all leave photos of the day, and anything else CP related. Please, everyone feel free to join up and leave your photos in the group pool - espescially on the 4th, when the place should be a hive of activity, people painted up as cats and all sorts.

The pictures should all be viewable through that link too, so the guys at Matador, and Chan, can view them at their leisure (& join up too of course). Hopefully we can raise some smiles.

i hope she recovers well and doesn't feel pressured to get back to it so soon. i had a bout of illness that really put me out of commission for 7 months. the worst thing about it was having my boss stress me out about getting better and FAST so i could get back to work. what's important is full recovery of mind, body and spirit. i still struggle somewhat because of all of that pressure and stress. no amount of money is important when you're facing a health challenge. you get a whole new perspective. so right now i know it's best to have peace and forget everyone's expectations. <3 much much love to chan.

i live in ireland and i bought flights to london to see her perform in the barbican,i went to london anyway and had a great time(well as good a time as i could have had without going to the gig).the point i wanted to make is that i dont care about losing money on flights and a hotel(even though i am a student),the important thing is her health.i wouldnt be able to live with the guilt if she had come over to play when sick and had gotten even worse.i hope she gets better soon, then we can see her at her best.
is there anyway of online members getting advance tickets for these gigs by the way?last time she played ireland i had to travel miles to get tickets only to find out they had sold out minutes before i got there(there was only 100 available).
tá mé ag mothú níos fearr agus slan leat!

I was in London with my friend too, although out proper CP Day celbrations had to be put off. But i'm glad people liked the idea and maybe it should happen every year.

I would just like to question it being 4th March. It might be nicer if it was on a good day for Chan like her birthday rather than on the day she ws ill and had to cancel a show. It might be bad memories. I doubt she would be celebrating Cat Power day herself but I think it would be nicer for her if she thought we all celebrating on a date that had positive connotations.

Keith
03-25-2006, 10:32 AM
Ofcouse it does not have to be the same day every year. But i think in most case's people thought it would be a good idea to have it on that day. So we could turn a bit of a Native into a postive and just to do something Cat Power related to as you say celbrate her.

It's up to other people too maybe we shouldn't have it every year. Just this year because of what happened.
