so i want to hear some really shambling, bizarre, exact opposite of stoner, frothing at the mouth kind of rock n roll. obviously i need more capt. beefheart in my life and i think i'll buy the residents' animal lover, but what else? is that new man man record, six demon bag, worth the faint buzz going around? royal trux and neil michael hagerty must fit in here somewhere, right? and before you type anything, i'm not interested in the fiery furnaces.

I can't stand them, but maybe you'd like Hella?

As far as the bluesy aspect goes if you haven't checked out the Black Keys yet you should promptly do so. Straight up gritty and bluesy out of Akron Ohio.

Kid B, do you write press kits

yeah, i know about hella. of course i like them, but it isn't exactly what i'm looking for. i actually really do need to check out flipper and the birthday party. and i know about the black keys, but i'm looking for much weirder. i'm thinking in terms of beefheart weird, or maybe tom waits weird.

The weirdest band Ive ever heard was Doo Rag. To my ears they were absolutely awful, like a really bad cross between Trout Mask Replica and Half Japanese.

pussy galore

I get the impression from what he's asking that those bands arent weird enough.

Im into weirdness, idiosyncracy and being individual but Half Japanese just took the piss as far as I can tell. My only two real requirements for any band is that you get your instruments vaguely in tune and that you all play in the same key. After you've established that you can do what you want.

Playing miles out of tune isnt "punk rock", its just shit.

actually pussy galore and chain gang sound perfect.

Playing miles out of tune isnt "punk rock", its just shit.Half Japanese started playing in 1974, when "punk rock" existed in isolated spots with no knowledge that there were others out there doing similar things. They were not taking the piss but doing exactly what they wanted to do and doing it with passion, humor and style.

The Grifters - lofi, bluesy/psychedelic racket
Laughing Hyenas - punk-blues
The Monkeywrench - Mudhoney side project blending blues, punk and country.
Henry Cow - sort of similar to Soft Machine
Walter Wegmüller - recorded one album - Tarot. strange and beautiful
Etron Fou Leloublan - weird 80's space/experimental band from France

Flipper seconded.
Also Comets on Fire. Maybe not "bizarre," but they do froth, I think.

No, but he writes halfway decent parody. Have you seen his other posts?

yes, except you left out his best album: You Walk Alone

OK, detachment kit might not have been completely appropriate. Magik Markers though? Also, maybe too obvious, but Wolf Eyes always freaks me out.

I never deleted an album quicker in my life.

I almost put that on there, but I wasn't sure because I only have a couple MP3s from that one.

I never deleted an album quicker in my life.

I'll second that. All my friends love Magik Markers, but I think they're a fucking joke. I don't think "confrontational" alone makes for interesting music, and I don't like feeling like I'm being made fun of by a band I'm watching.

yes, you need a lot of beefheart in your life

You should look into HCI's jam, Yura Yura Teikoku. Also maybe Little Howlin' Wolf (not to be confused with the actual Howlin' Wolf). The former isn't really "frothing at the mouth" but a bit Beefhearty at times. the latter is just madness.

US Maple are fucking incredible, don't hesitate to get Talker or Acre Thrills.

Anything by Royal Trux fits well, also Neil Hagerty's solo stuff. Jennifer's album as RTX is awesome too, but its realy pro R.A.W.K., not really wild. worth hearing though.

Man Man is OK, haven't heard the new one, but the first one is ok as a second-tier beefheart/trux weirdness. a bit too self-consciously weird for my taste though.

Need New Body do what Man Man's trying to do a TON better. both albums on File-13 are awesome, though the new one on Kill Rock Stars kinda sucks rotten balls.

For more straight up rock n roll wildness, the new Times New Viking is incredible, Up-Tight (from Japan), is pretty rad, as is Plastic Crimewave Sound (eclipse records), and my mind is blanking now. I'll be back, though, with more awesomeness for you.

You should read Jay Hinman's Agony Shorthand (http://agonyshorthand.blogspot.com) blog. He's a fucking connosieur of wild musics from across the rocknroll timeline.

I just downloaded an mp3 from their record companys site.

Are they being f***ing serious? Do they really think this shit is good music?

you sent me a couple mp3s a while ago and times new viking was in the pile. the song was okay, but i didn't think much of it at the time; maybe now i'll like it more, so i'll give it another go.

and are you really recommending the two us maple albums that i've talked up on THIS SAME MESSAGE BOARD before? i guess we hardly knew each other.

enough people are excited about yura yura teikoku for me to stop sleeping on them. mr. hci, where should i start?

haha, i actually kinda like magik markers, but i doubt that's really much of a surprise given some of the other stuff i'm into. i guess i conditioned myself for a high threshold of confrontation when i spent that month rocking merzbow and kites.

salman, i'll have to check out some of those. thanks!

Make no mistake, Times New Viking are more of an indie rock band of the "1991" school, but that record is one of the wildest things I've heard in a few years.

yeah, I'm a total dope late late at night and I forgot that we had had extensive conversations before about US Maple. *slaps forehead*

Not exactly bluesy, but definately out there: Larry "Wildman" Fischer.
Not exactly "out there" but definitely bluesy: The Gun Club "Fire of Love."
Flat Duo Jets? Workdogs?

Not sure about bluesy but Ween's The Pod is wacked out like a madman.:)

Good tunes though and highly listenable, not just avantgarde noisy shit like Jandek.

A few that come to mind:

Brass Castle (http://www.BrassCastle.com) would fit the bill perfectly, IMO. They're a bit bluesy, definitely non-traditional in terms of unexpected twists and turns musically, and they're frothers. They're also the best band in Atlanta, out of many great bands.

The Hampton Grease Band was Atlanta's answer to Beefheart and Zappa. They released one album, 1971's Music to Eat, that was allegedly the worst selling album in Columbia Records history, though I find that hard to believe. It was reissued on CD a few years ago and is well-worth seeking out.

The first Meat Puppets album actually may fit the bill better than Brass Castle. They're definitely frothing at the mouth weird! When I first heard it, when I was 19, I could not get into it at all and sold it (I bought it 'cause it was on SST). Six months later I heard their contribution to the Amuck compilation and decided to rebuy the album. After that, I couldn't stop listening to it. The Rkyodisc remaster also contains their debut 7" EP, In a Car, cuts from compilations and a buncha unreleased stuff.

I also second the nomination to check out Yura Yura Teikoku, of course!

While you're investigating Royal Trux (my favorites are Thank You and Sweet Sixteen, BTW), definitely look into Neil's previous band, Pussy Galore. Get Right Now!, if you can find it.
