I recently heard a cover of Bob Dylan's He Was a Friend of Mine performed by Chan.

It was on one of those private myspace profiles that got deleted off of myspace after The Greatest came out. The author of the site wouldn't tell me what album it was on and I've yet to find it through searching the internet and record stores.

I mean, I didn't dream this. It was quite obvious that it was a Cat Power song, and several lyric websites list the song but not the album. It didn't sound like a recording of a live performance, as the audio quality was good and there was no background noise.

Any information would be helpful. I'd like the locate the album so I could buy it.

Thanks,

Im pretty sure it was from a John Peel session. Its a traditional folk song that Bob Dylan picked up from Dave Van Ronk. Dylan's version is on the Bootleg Series - Volumes 1-3. Chan's version shouldnt be too hard to find on a file sharing network like Soulseek.:)

Personally I wish Strange Fruit would release the two sessions officially. I have a bootleg of one of them but not the covers session that this came from.

Thanks for the quick response.

I was afraid that would be the case. I try to avoid file sharing programs, as I'm not a huge fan of downloading music for personal reasons. However, the song was so good, the best of the three versions I've heard, I might just have to download it.

I'll see if anyone else has any ideas.

it's a beautiful version, very worth downloading it. i have it as a live version with a backing band but the peel session is great, also on limewire. this is cheesy, but they close brokeback mountain with the willie nelson version and chan's would have been better suited......speaking of mountains: one of my fave cat power songs is mountaintops. anyone know if this is an original or a cover or what.....

It was actually a day or so after I bought the Brokeback sountrack that I heard Chan's version of the song and fell in love. I'm a Willie Nelson fan, and his version is great, but I do think that her version is better than his and would have accompanied Brokeback a lot better.

HEY MATADOR! shake your magic 8 ball and ask if there might ever be a peel session collection. the ones not used for The Covers Record, obviously.

the recordings that float around the internet are terrible quality, but the songs are gorgeous.
