the block-long line outside had me worried i might miss the matmos set at the whitney tonight, but i got inside just as they started and it worked out perfectly. great set! i think i even preferred it to their show here in january, though it might just be that i'm more familiar with the new songs now. but the new material takes such new life live ... "rag for william s. burroughs" was phenomenal - scattered samples melting into the piano melody before all the percussion took over. and i could honestly listen to them jam on the larry levan song for an hour.

oh and they played "for felix (and all the rats)" too - first time i've seen them play an old song live. it's actually one of my least fave songs of theirs, but it worked well live. drew + MC were plucking the bars of a rat cage in rhythm and then sampling it, and then MC starting playing it with a bow as well.
