Just saw some Subaru ad featuring Lance Armstrong and the intro from "Bellbottoms" - perhaps my favorite JSBX moment ... is nothing sacred? Though it was enough in the background that it wasn't too painful. Neither was the "Sea of Love" ad. Are there any other Matador ads I'm missing?

Either way, how does it work with these? Does the ad agency approach the label or the bands? Is it strictly the artist's decision?

Somewhere there's a great ad using "5-4=Unity" waiting to be made....

The label is approached by the agency or music supervisor (depending on who picked the music).... Of course I run it by the band to see if they want to do the commercial or not.... Same goes for music in movies or tv shows...

btw, years ago i think Jello wanted to use 5-4=Unity...
the band passed.

Well, crap. If you're going to sell your song to be used in an ad, you could hardly do better than Jello! It's the most inoffensive commercial foodstuff in the marketplace.

Those Pavement boys are snobby.

i remember a few years back, jon spencer did a great radio spot or two for calvin klein. i was rolling when i heard them on hot 97 (local nyc hip hop station). i've never been able to locate them online.

about matador and ads. in the last issue of spin there was a matador ad, one of their best one's that i've seen in awhile. they mentioned something about people to stop complaining about not letting guided by voices releasing as many albums as they wanted. is this complaint attributed to me in any way? because i remember bringing that up about a year ago on the board (under the name nomorefunfun) around the time gbv were in the process of signing with matador. please say it was me. taking the credit for that one has helped me immensely at shows with the ladies. i casually walk up to someone, mention it with the blatancy of an olsen twin doing a hackjob of what they call acting, and they instantly become putty in my hand. it also helps if i have sideburns and a t-shirt that is a bit too small.

matador should start doing the ad thing in spin again, that was the best thing in that mag. i even cut them out to collect them. but i lost them :-( one of my favorites was the one where they mentioned all these made-up band names and said they are not actually on the label, "so go ahead and order them anyway." hehe
