I was just wondering if anybody knows wether this song is about Vincent Gallo? I don't know why it would be and figure its probably just a coincidence (wikipedia claims that they were romantically linked which I think is just speculation because of this song title). Has Chan ever mentioned this in any interviews? She hasnt to my knowledge. :)

Yes it defintely is about Vincent Gallo. I read an interview with him (can't remeber which one) where he is questioned about their relationship and he says something like 'shame i broke up with her she's pretty talented' something something 'she even wrote a song about me'. these arn't direct quotations but that was the gist of it.
plus the lyrics would support this 'oh chan what a lover you've become'. maybe he took her under his wing when she first came to new york or they dated or something, anyway it sounds from the song as if she is bitter towards him and he is regretful towards her. he is a womaniser so i wouldn't put it past him.
does anyone know who the love of her life was that she broke up with during the promotion for You Are Free, i heard an interview with her where she said she saw him with another women whilst doing a show in paris or something.
im afraid all my knowledge on these subjects are half baked

To be honest it does make sense now you say that they did go out. I read this interview with her where she said that she considered Bill Callahan to be her first boyfriend because she had a boyfriend early on when she lived in New York who "didn't respect me at all." It makes sense because from what I understand he's a sexist who doesn't give a shit about women's feelings.:(
Anyway, the guy in the picture below is Daniel, the love of her life who she broke up with. He was an out of work fashion model and she dragged him around the world with her (something like 2001 to 2003 or something - its a bit fuzzy how long they went out for but wasnt like two weeks or anything, it was quite a while) untill she saw him with another girl.

I don't know if its just 'cause Im from a shitty small town in Britain where nothing happens, but this is the sort of stuff that makes New York fascinating. It just seems to be this hive of artistic creativity, just full of underground film makers, musicians and writers doing there own thing with a real scene there to support them (or at least it did when you had Chan, God Is My Co-Pilot, harmony Korine and so on doing their thing there).
Or maybe Im just getting carried away

I just reread an very good article about Chan and it said 1999 to 2002. The guy in the "He War" video is Daniel, Daniel Cury. It said that by the time the video came out she had realised her relationship was over. She described the time with him as "the happiest time of my life" and the two years of touring following the breakup as the "the worst moment of my life.":(:(:(
now I hope you don't mind, if I take your private life, slap it on the table and cut it....with a knife - Bill Callahan (smog) "you moved in" from The Doctor Came At Dawn

Tobe honest, I think that some of the stuff on Knock Knock is about Chan 'cause it was the first record that came out after they split up. "Hit the Ground Runnin'" with the line "I had to leave the country though there were some nice folk there" I think is definitely about their relationship because in 1997 they were living together in a farmhouse in Prosperity, South Carolina. "Left Only With Love" I think is definitely about her too.
I read an interview with Chan where she described Bill as a great man and I just think its cool that theres no bitterness between them. There was a time when I really didnt want to like Bill but the point is that he's an amazing artist. Its not like its a Kurt Cobain/Courtney Love situation where its really easy to hate one of them (in this case Courtney) because in the case of Chan and Bill they're BOTH incredible. :)
too true, they're both great and also completely different.

I think they're both so much their own people and just total one-offs that nobody else sounds like either of them because its just somebodys heart on a record without any editing or any manipulation or anything.:)

first of all call me a girl but i don't blame chan cause that Daniel is very handsome. It fits that Gallo woudln't respect her at all cause he is a bastard in real life in that surly arty way, and the lyrics to the song speak of a regret at being mistreated.
Now heres a question you might be able to solve; I saw Chan at ATP in 2004 (i think) curated by sonic youth - now she had a shy daniel looking type guy side stage and brought him out to play guitar on a couple of songs there looked to be some chemistry but i wasn't sure. Maybe it was someone different.
I know what you mean about NYC they all seem to know each other. Chloe Sevigny just hanging out at the same smiths night as Chan or the guys from Love As Laughter. seems like hipster nation.
Im not sure if Bill Callahan is a nice guy, i love his music, but the current rumours that he is dating Joanna Newsome seem to make me think that he is just out for the hot new singer songwriter on the block. maybe this is cynical but combined with the lyric
'im just like the freelance fence painter/who takes the ice tea you brought him/then eyes your backside as you leave/'
makes me wonder about his womanising. he may not be in Gallos league but chan does seem to go for these cocky arty types.

I agree. I think Chan needs to experiment a bit with perhaps a 9 to 5 type who doesn't have an emo haircut (whatever that is?), who can't play or sing a note, yet is respectful of ladies and their needs.
I would be willing to be the first guinea pig. No, no, I insist.

You can't help who you fall in love with but I agree with you totally. I think its just a shame that maybe Bill lost interest in the relationship after a while. It feels weird discussing somebodys prvate life going on what Ive read from interviews (it feels wrong to me so Im not going to say anymore about it). From what I understand he did go out with Joanna Newsom but Im not sure if they are still together.

Hmm.. I don't know. They were very much in love and she took him everywhere but Ive never heard Chan say that he had any musical talent. Was it M Ward? I know they don't look the same but who knows... from a distance they might. I just checked wikipedia's page about ATP and it says that in 2004 Chan appeared there on BOTH weekends and interestingly enough Gallo was playing the second week.
