A Short History of On Fire, With Love

On Fire, With Love is our second album and it has been 2 years in the making. Let us go back a bit first though. 2004, the year of living dangerously. Lay of the Land was released. We spent the year touring the world, trailblazing through America with Guided by Voices and Pretty Girls Make Graves, enjoying ourselves immensely in Germany and acquainting ourselves with the major trunk roads of the UK at all hours of the night.
Back home, we regrouped. A year of playing intense music at an intense pace had taken a toll so we locked ourselves away in First Love, our studio, to write some quiet songs and to reacquaint ourselves with Nottingham. These songs debuted at the Greens Mill Old School Hall, Sneinton, in December 2004. Candles and holly adorned the beautiful old building and we all shared a glass of mulled wine. At the same time the desire to play loudly had not left us, we just needed a break. So an idea formed: Why not write a double album? One album of songs that had made up the Greens Mill gig and one album of new, louder songs. With this deceptively simple idea in mind, we decamped to Cornwall with Glaswegian producer Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Delgados) to make our next record. In a remote farmhouse, in close quarters, we were in our element, and the recordings were bearing fruit.(No Backwards Glances, Anti-story, Christmas Letters and In). However, we soon realised the ambitiousness of the project we had set ourselves and two records in three weeks proved to be too great a task. It was clear we needed to return to First Love and that some fresh impetus was needed. We jettisoned the double-album idea and enlisted the help of Neil Wells (Savoy Grand, Escapologists, Line) and co-producer Pete Fletcher (Escapologists). We spent the remainder of 2005 back in First Love's familiar surroundings with heads down, fine-tuning what would become On Fire, With Love. Neil has added many textures to the new recordings, from the cornet blasts that punctuate Annie, Tacoma to the crunching guitar at the end of The Key and we were also able to accommodate some of our quieter songs (Midsummer, Punch and Judy, Shooting Arrows). An old Robert Browning poem was resurrected for Youth and Art and a big old rock song, Battleground, was added as the final piece in the puzzle.
