View Full Version : the Jicks @ the El Rey last night!!!
They were so good last night, I had a great time.
They played everything off of Pig Lib except for Sheets, plus Dynamic Calories, Phantasies, Jo Jo's Jacket, Church on White, a hilarious Elton John-esque version of Jenny and the Ess Dog, a great new song, and a really funny ad lib performance of the Replacements classic 'I will dare'. It was brilliant to see SM screaming "how black are you, how white am I". Also we were treated to some drunken a capella by John Moen.
P.S. Goldenboy was pretty bad

Yes, a great show last night. The Replacements cover was great.
I was really impressed by how tight the band was. Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure to see Pavement live, but from what I've gathered (Slow Century, some bootlegs) they were a pretty loose outfit. Last night was (excuse the term) shit-hot. Everything sounded so good, especially after being at Coachella all weekend where everything was way too loud (I guess that' the nature of a festival though).
I missed most of Goldenboy's set, but I actually didn't find the part I saw as bad as I expected it to be. I thought his rhythm section was holding it down, a feature I always enjoy in live music.
Addendum: the crowd seemed very into it, which sort of surprised me. The other Malkmus gig I went to featured a much less attentive audience. Good thing.
The absolute worst part about Goldenboy was his lyrics.
I do agree about the tightness(?) thing.
How was Coachella by the way? I didn't go this year, because of a lack of funds. From what I was told I didn't miss much. The 2nd day looked much better than the first.

I enjoyed Coachella but it wasn't perfect.
The bad: the sound could've been better, the somewhat apathetic crowd, The Rapture, Interpol's start to their set (out of tune, jetlagged), the wind was howling, the Mars Volta.
The good: great weather, lots of great sets (Interpol's end, Blur, Ben Folds, Sonic Youth, ), and some really good ones (White Stripes, Beasties, Tortoise, QOTSA, The Hives). I have pretty broad taste and tend to enjoy things more live than on record, so I'm more easily pleased at these sort of festivals.
All in all, it was a good weekend, but the sound problems, especially in the tents, need to be rectified. Also, there were many bands I would've liked to have caught but couldn't because of conflicts. I know that just shows how many good acts there were, but it still sucked. I'd give a deeper analysis but I'm going home from work now. I'm happy to entertain anymore specific questions as the resident attendee.
