Don't think we didn't hear the talk around the watercooler after we let loose the first mp3 from Yo La Tengo's future contender for album of the decade, "I am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass."

"Sure," you said. "'Beanbag Chair' is beautiful, summery, heartbreaking, and catchier than the flu, but Yo La Tengo claimed they weren't afraid of us. They said they would beat our ass. Where is this supposed ass beating? Where is this lack of fear?"

We listened. We posted Pass the Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind (http://www.matadorrecords.com/mpeg/yo_la_tengo/ylt_hatchet.mp3)

Oh yes, it's amazing. I want to hear that live on Sept 2.

The MoB cover here http://www.matadorrecords.com/music/mp3s.html is quite the ass-beater too.

Is this track representative of the album as a whole (in terms of sound, style, and sheer grooviness)? If so, this may be the musical highlight of my Fall.

The album is insanely diverse with 2 tracks of over 10 minute guitar jamming of which this is one (the other is entitled 'The Story of Yo La Tango,' and yes, that is the correct spelling for this song title). There are excursions into soul, classic 50's rock'n'roll, punk, Velvety jams, a couple of breezy pop songs a la the other MP3, "Beanbag Chair," and some heartfelt introspective numbers sung by both Ira/Georgia and by James...
