I was planning on coming to an upcoming Malkmus show. Does Malkmus allow taping of his concerts? Is there any policy in place? If there's no policy, does anyone have an email for someone in his management (or even his email would work, if it's known)?

BTW, if you're not familiar with any of this, it's not a for-profit thing. Copies of the show are distributed for free...

Malk as far as I know lets people tape his shows, but you're going to want to talk to the venue and okay it with them.

As long as you bring a copy of the taping policy to shows, the venues normally don't care... That's why I want to find a policy. :D

you should talk to Mike B, who runs the Acid Casualties site.

Malk doesn't really inform venues that he allows taping.

For the greatest success I suggest getting to the venue REALLY EARLY. Early enough that SM is still there for load-in / soundcheck. He usually goes out to eat etc. after soundcheck so he won't be around to give the a-okay to the venue if you get there to late. When is soundcheck / load-in you ask? Could be anytime, usually late afternoon or early evening. I realize this is a hassle. Make sure you ask him to inform venues he is down with taping. Maybe someday he will get into a habit of telling venues about his policy. Maybe talking to other band members isn't a bad idea either since they aren't as busy as SM before a show.

Calling ahead to the venue isn't a bad idea either.

If you can't get in touch with anyone just be nice to the security people. Ask to talk with someone from the band or Remko (the soundman). Just remember to be nice and realize that everyone at the venue, including the band, has work to do to get ready for the show.

I have had to set my gear aside at a coat check and wait for Remko to appear. When he did, I got my gear and had time to set it up.

Sorry I can't describe exactly what Remko looks like. If you see someone at the soundboard ask nicely if he is Remko. If not, ask if he is in the house and can give the okay for your gear.

Good luck,
MIKE B

PS. Don't forget to get in touch with me (via acidcasualties.com) so I can get a copy. I have quite a few new shows from Europe coming my way.

Well I'm going to the 9:30 Club show, and I really don't want to (and probably can't) travel into DC early. Is there any official page that states his taping policy so I can bring that with me??? That usually helps.

And the 9:30 Club doesn't have a place to check anything at the door, so I wont be able to just leave my stuff and go in. Hopefully persistance will pay off, or else I might have to stealth it... :)

I think the 9;30 Club is usually pretty cool with taping. I have quite a few tapes from various bands playing there.

That's all contingent on the band notifying the 9:30 Club that they allow taping. If they haven't done that, the 9:30 club is one of the strictest venues in the country, probably just under the House of Blues...
