View Full Version : Is Matador still an indie label?

Funk,

I think it does make us an independent label in the usual industry sense - not affiliated with the 5 media conglomerates known as the majors, or the Big Five. It also means we don't use branch distribution in the US - another (perhaps outdated) criterion for being considered a major label.

However, in a deeper sense, I think we're still independent in the most important area... which is of course Chris and Gerard's A&R. They continue to do all of it and have final say over it. Matador still reflects Chris and Gerard's taste in what it releases, and nobody else's, for better or worse.

Of course, that was true when Capitol owned half of us too.

I think the Beggars concept really departs from the indie/major dichotomy to build a new paradigm - that of small labels pooling their resources and cooperating together in order to compete more effectively.

I'd give up any and all pretense of independence in exchage for the ressurrection of Buzzy's Roast Beef. I don't know if that qualifies as a Faustian Pact, but now that it has been stated publicy....let's see if it happens.

hence the emoticon.

if you know anyone planning on busting out of the Charles St. Jail, tell them not to bother. There's nowhere good to eat in the neighborhood.

At least there's still the double whammy of Halal Falafel and Pomme Frites in the East Village.

The Charles St. Jail is now being incorporated into MGH, they're turning it into an outpatient ward, building a huge ass-end onto the dismal old jail building, kind of like the eye and ear institute, but to the side instead of on top...

I hope they at least take the bars off the windows.

there's plenty of tony little bistros on Charles St. these days.. just make sure you're loaded with cash if you're bustin out of jail...

...and there's no point checking yourself out of St. Elsewhere, either.

and now there's no smoking in boston either...

how times have changed, oh my

I never got a chance to go to Buzzy's, and I've lived here for about 16 years.. Its been closed for ages now, but I remember constantly crossing the river on the train and seeing it and thinking "dammit, next time, I'm going to Buzzy's.."

there was no next time.
