Naturally, I was there at 11 am to buy it.
Like the first record it didn't knock me out right away. But I've been listening all day and I can pick out a few early favorites, including The Laws have changed, It's only divine right (bitchin' guitar), and the electric version.
A more than worthy successor, I'd say.
I agree. As with the first album, it has taken a little getting used to. But I must say, "It's Only Divine Right" and "The Laws Have Changed" kick some ass. A lot of it.
I've had an advance for three weeks now, and it keeps getting better everytime I listen to it. I liked it a lot at first listen, but it didn't grab me. Now the hooks are stuck in my head for days (after not listening to it for two days last week I was still singing the hook to every song!).
I think it's better than the first album (which I loved). Dan's songs are the best I've ever heard from him (never cared much for Destroyer) and Carl's tracks are even better than his previous brilliant work. In addition, the album sounds much better to me. The production is more balanced, not as much high-end.
Although I don't see this album having that one song that everyone agrees on (a la "Letter from an Occupant"), I think it's because every track on here is on that level and great.
I played it in the store last night and lots of people were asking "who is this? this is great", so I hope they came back and bought the album today :)
Pop/rock album of the year by a landslide!
Any word on more east coast dates??? Philly, DC, Chapel Hill?

You can't read that and not run out and buy the fucking album. No sarcasm intended.
I really like the New Pornographers, but now I need the instant gratification and get the album tomorrow after reading that post.
I think that this album as a whole is better than the first. It lacks the great individual songs that the first had, like the first three songs off of 'Mass', but then again an opening three songs like that may never be heard again. I find this album much easier to just sit down and listen to from start to finish. Very good, totally worth it.

I've listened to the album a few times now and its quite an impressive album. The harmonies, especially on "Testament to Youth In Verse", the melodies and song structures are really cool. The album has a nice sounding vibe too. Current favourites so far are "The Electric Version", "All for Swinging You Around" and "Its Only Divine Right". Really solid album.
Anybody know if Dan Bejar is going to to tour with them?
i think a damn record store in my town needs to have gotten this in. nashville-ho
Is there no Disc Exchange or Cats Music in Nashville? I know that those are the places that I shop in the Knox and they usually get their goods from a distributer in Nashville. Oh well if all else fails you could head three hours east and get one here, they had a ton of copies at the good ole Disc Exchange.

I really dig the album, and did anyone else notice that are own Patrick Amory was thanked in the liner notes? I bet it's not the first time. Some good artist needs to thank all of us faithful BBSers for our constant patronage.

Three-day update:
This album is pure genius. It's as good as its predecessor, and surprisingly different in a lot of ways. I love it more with every listen. The Laws Have Changed is going to be the song of the summer, if not the year. While I wasn't hooked at one listen, it's truly ridiculous how amazing this is. I can't wait for the tour.

Brand new fan who loves the new album and can't wait to see them this summer. Can't decide which album I like better, they both really grabbed a hold of me, which is not easy to do. They even make the disease I'm suffering from sound pretty.

I was a little skeptical when I first bought the disc because Mass Romantic - to me - is almost perfect. I also wasn't terribly impressed the first time I listened to it, but multiple spins made the hooks pick away at my brain. Unless Grandaddy comes out with something spec-friggin'-tacular, this is definitely the pop-rock album of the year.
Favorites include: "The Laws Have Changed", "All For Spinning You Around", "Testament to Youth in Verse", and "Ballad of a Comeback Kid".
