View Full Version : Wowee Zowee: Sordid Sentinels Edition

At last, the long-awaited deluxe version of Pavement's third album, 'Wowee Zowee,' entitled 'Wowee Zowee: Sordid Sentinels Edition.'
I discovered that for some reason we had two Pavement forums in the Older Releases section, and rather annoyingly, vBulletin offers no way to merge them. So be aware there is a ton more Pavement discussion in the Older Releases section.
Release date is November 7; front cover art can be found on the Pavement (http://www.matadorrecords.com/pavement) Pavement page; packaging will be similar to and as nice as 'Slanted Enchanted: Luxe & Reduxe' and 'Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain: LA's Desert Origins.'
More info, including complete track listing, coming soon.

This is going to kick the living shit out of the CR,CR re-issue. Most of the WZ B-Sides are better than the album, the extra stuff will just be icing on the cake.
I really really really hope that Brighten The Corners gets the same treatment. I am interested in hearing every note that was played during the recording of that album.

I'm always excited at the prospect of more Pavement. Ever since I heard the Slanted reissue Ive been wondering why "Baptist Blacktick" and "My First Mine" didnt make the final cut.:)

I'm so excited for this as WZ is my all-time favorite pavement album, but i don't know if it will "kick the shit" out of the crooked rain reissue just for the fact of the sheer number of unreleased studio tracks -- (kinda the Pavement VU) which were all so great, hands off the bayou and the much better flux=rad, etc. i also already have most of all of the tracks here but certainly psyched for sordid and sentinels, but of course i haven't heard the record so i shouldn't be saying shit about it in the first place but can't wait to buy it. as for crooked rain, i loved the reissue so so much and listen to it non-stop but i like all of the extras much better than the original album, but that might just be bc it is too evocative of a specific time for me (i.e. high school).

Well, they *did* make the final cut for the respective records they were released on. They weren't outtakes from Slanted, just tracks on the preceding singles. See also: Westing: By Musket and Sextant on Drag City, which collects all of these singles (many of them overlapping with the 2CD Slanted)

someone on the pavement message board queued up all the tracks from disc 1 in winamp (minus the two unreleased ones) and the total time came to 80 minutes and 44 seconds. that won't fit on a cd! either he's wrong, or something is amiss. help!

take note: this is the tracklisting from Pitchfork, I wouldn't exactly hold them to any standards of reporting, but yeah, I thought it sounded like it wouldn't fit on one disc either.

09-19-2006, 03:11 PM
well, i guess the total time of the tracklist is 78:44, which leaves about a minute for both "sordid" and "sentinel." judging by their kinda throwaway titles, they may very well just be bits of studio fiddlin' and not real songs.
they could be awesome, though!

This is great ... so, what are the "participating record stores"?
tinobeat
10-15-2006, 12:10 PM
so is it only participating record store (I presume Newbury Comics in New England), or is it a matador online store thing too?
Patrick
10-15-2006, 12:15 PM
Matador Store (online) and any other retailers that want to participate.... just like the Yo La Tengo season pass promotion.
You can get your album plus goodies mailed to you (by Matador or a retailer closer to you), or you can pick them up at your local store on street date (if your local store participates).
We had 16 participating retailers for YLT. We worked out a lot of kinks with that program, since it was our first. A few retailers will drop out, and more will probably join in.
Full details on Monday.

Or people from any country that is not the US, for that matter? So will international users have the option of pre-ordering the album at the Matador online store and enjoy the same download privileges and 7" as people in the US get? :)

this edition of "MBB inside jokes" brought to you by Sam Adams...
in all seriousness, I can't even express how stoked I am. the CRCR reissue looked way nicer than the S&E reissue (which already looked incredible in its own right), and judging by the YLT 2LP and the Chavez reish, Matadors only gonna be doing even better...
Also, WZ is pretty unequivocally my favorite Pave album, so this is gonna be ridiculous...

Hi All,
Maybe I'm just a bit slow, but....MatadorRecords isn't on the Wow-Out retailer list?? I'm assuming we'll get all the goodies if we've already pre-purchased through Matador's store, correct?
tinobeat
10-19-2006, 10:38 AM
Matador isn't a retailer. The store on their site is actually run by Insound, which IS one of the retailers on the list.

Well it is somewhere in between. We update and maintain the pages for the store and all of that. Insound just do the packing, shipping and billing part of it.
Either way, if you order from the Matador store you're in.

what'd be the best bet for pre-ordering if one lives in canada i.e. near toronto?
Patrick
10-20-2006, 12:04 PM
Hey guys, pick it up at your local store, if you have one... support indie retail and guarantee that you get the record on street date by picking it up at the store! (no guarantee on 7" and poster though - these are strictly while supplies last - we still have plenty but it's impossible to say if we still will by street date and orders will be filled first come first serve - you'll get the concert download for sure though)
Stores are listed on the wow-out page:
http://www.wow-out.com
(click on the 'participating stores' link - new ones are being added every day)
If your local store hasn't signed up, they can join up if (a) they don't require barcodes on all product, because the 7" and poster don't have them (this excludes most chains) and (b) they move fast - they should email blake@matadordirect.com
Toronto: Rotate This is participating.

thanks patrick!
didn't see rotate this on the list (my pre-ordering poser was in reference to the 7") at first blush. gonna look again. thanks! gbv.
Yes, by all means please go to your local store. The orders are coming at a pretty good rate but we should be able to have a good idea of when we max out on the 7"s and we'll post a notice or let stores know that the 7" is gone.
Dave
PS Shipping to Canada is kinda weird to say the least (Mentioned many times in various threads here) so I'd say Rotate This is def. your best bet.

the show was really something. was this the fabled "lost" live show that was at one point to be released commercially by Matador, or just a cool find along the way to the WZ reissue?
Seamus
10-23-2006, 10:37 AM
I think it was going to be released as a promo-only vinyl thing to radio stations or something. The lost live album really IS lost, as far as I am aware, as the masters were destroyed in a car crash weren't they? Although there are some lower quality back-ups. Anyway, the live album was recorded at a venue called Red Rocks, and was going to have the imaginative title, "Live at Red Rocks"
Seamus
10-23-2006, 10:41 AM
Yes, the Palace show is "OLE-170 1 LP Pavement -- Live Giveaway Promo LP X" on the complete discography (apparently scheduled for "release" in summer 1995). The live album ("Live X" in the discography) is OLE-324

What do you think of this? Whats the remastering like? Are the bonus tracks anything more than curios?
Im thinking about getting it but Ive already got the standard CD version and want to know if its worth getting again.
Thanks.:)
