Dead Meadow rocked. They did a bunch of stuff I don't know ('cause I only have their debut) and a handful of songs from the debut.

SM&tJ were great. The set was mostly the new album and a few tracks from the last one. They did a cover of that song by The Cure that I like but don't know the name ("Without You" is repeated a lot). The band was tight and SM played some great lead guitar. It was nice seeing him do a good set the whole way through; I saw Pavement three times and they were woefully inconsistent every time.

Wasn't the first song of the encore the first song from the Pig Lib bonus disc?

Do you mean poet and the witch? Parts of it sound kind of like that, but thats not what it was. Acid casualties setlists show a new song that might be called daddy. I think that's what it might be.

So I get there and there's this massive line! I`ve never had to wait in line to get into The Echo Lounge before. I figured maybe they were doing cavity searches or something but after about 15 minutes or so it finally sped up. I was getting worried that I would miss Dead Meadow since I got there just 15 minutes or so before the alleged show time.

So, anyhow, Dead Meadow rocked and people in the audience screamed but it seemed like some of them were screaming due to the delightful IRONY of a modern band playing "heavy metal" and opening for an "indie rock icon." Or maybe they seriously enjoyed it? They did a bunch of songs I didn't know ('cause I only have their first album) and ended with a couple from the debut and it was nice and warm and fuzzy. The last time I saw them I walked out 'cause I thought they were boring but not this time, baby!

Did I say "warm" a moment ago? I should have said "hot" as in "please, please, please turn on the air conditioning, I'm dying here!" I wore long pants 'cause I'm down to one pair of shorts that fit and I wanted to wear them to work tomorrow for casual day and, man, I was sweating up a storm!

Stephen Malkmus & His Jicks were up next and I just don't get it. I just don't get why folks hate this guy with such a passion. He writes nice pop songs, usually with nice weird bits, and they stick in your head. Maybe I'm biased because we went to the same college or maybe I'm not because I can't stand The Dave Matthews Band, thank you very much. They played mostly stuff off the new album, Pig Lib, a handful off his eponymous post-Pavement debut and a really good cover of that song by The Cure that I like ("Without You" maybe?). Some of the new songs on the new album have a nice prog rock feel to them so maybe that's why the local free rag hated it so much (one star out of a possible six); heck, "1% of One" reminds me of Gentle Giant.
