I can't wait to hear it. I guess "leaked" wouldn't be the exact right term as I believe its already out in Japan and Europe. In the states it got delayed because the decision to put it out on Temporary Residence Ltd. (http://www.temporaryresidence.com) was a very recent one, and I guess they're doing the packaging up right, with crazy origami paper and really intricate stuff. And they're also the only label releasing it on vinyl.

Though I'd love to hear it now, I'm definitely waiting to plop it on the turntable for the first listen...

I'm not going to tell you your opinion is wrong, because I hate when people do that. But I would encourage you to give the new album another chance. well, actually, another ten chances. I'd say it takes at least that many listens to even manage to sort thru the hooks on any given song. just last night, on an album I've been listening to for at least 2 months, it just hit me how great the movements of "Inspector Blancheflower" are, and that the confusing narration at the end of the song is back and forth dialog. I don't want to be one of those people who berates others for not sharing the same tastes, but I truly feel that Blueberry Boat is so genius and enjoyable that it would be a damn shame for anyone to pass it over without giving it another chance.

I'll do it, seriously. Maybe I was too consumed by other music. Maybe I thought the live show was less than great because they were creating a wall rather than a bridge to Spoon that evening.

But if you burn me like you did with Molina ----- man, no more second chance listens based on Troy's reco.

re: Fiery Furnaces. I have reservations about "grower" albums, but I certainly think that Blueberry Boat is one that blossoms under the title. Most of you probably know that I lean toward experimental music, but the first listen to this left me annoyed. Greatly. The hooks aren't always completely obscured but the length that they take to develop is tiring the first time or five around. After spending a little bit of time with it, though*, it becomes easier to manage. I guess that also begs the question, "does good, even great, music needed to be 'managed?'" but this is a question for another thread.

*Which is a unique thing about this album. Considering how much I actively hated Blueberry Boat, I wanted to revisit it. That may also have to do with Troy's glowing praise, though, I dunno.

I've spent most of my time with the following discs while between residences.

some albums I hated the first couple of times around: "Bright Flight" by the Silver Jews, "Come On Die Young" by Mogwai, and "A Series of Sneaks" by Spoon. and now, i'd rank these three amongst my all-time favorites. So, I'd say that YES, good music does sometimes take some warming up to.

Don't know if you are a rah! rah! type of Grand Rapids kind of fellow, but I had a rather dismal experience. The city and its peeps have this overwhelmingly religious vibe that rubs me the wrong way.

Redemption: Plus Minus was fucking amazing. The guys in the band are uber friendly. They played for a small audience, but acted like it was a New Years Eve show.

Its been a while so a list for the past few days:

Q And Not U - Different Damage CD
The amount of space and breathing room on this album is amazing. And the drummer... so crazy, yet tasteful...

Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender CD
She has now totally won me over and broken my heart. *sigh*

Double Leopards - Live in Detroit & Louisville 2002 CDR
2 tracks, about half an hour apiece, droned out heaven.

Growing - The Sky's Run into the Sea 2LP
totally triumphant, and so very patient.

Slint - Spiderland LP
ah, nostalgia! half of it is as amazing as everyone says it is, half of it is pretty empty in every way. not necessarily song-by-song, more moment-by-moment.

Robert Pollard - Fiction Man CD
I'm still waiting for this to hit me. Right now it just sounds like the most MOR thing he's done... come on Fiction Man! win me over!

all these exciting things have come through my mailbox in the past week that I'm working my way through:

Acid Mothers Temple / Ultrasound - In G 10"
Another Time-Lag beauty, recorded on Texas radio two years ago when the Acid Moms got together with Ultrasound (an Austin band) and rocked out for 20 minutes or so together. lovely.

Blood on the Wall - s/t LP
haven't listened to it yet, but it seems very promising from what little I've heard in passing and people talking about it. *fingers crossed!*

Double Leopards - Urban Concusssion LP
A bit darker than the other DL I own. They're one of those bands, though, that I keep getting records by even though they sound pretty similar (every performance is an improvisation, so in their 2 years of existence they've already got some 10 releases of which I have 3), but the textures are always so interesting and unique on closer listens. Their 2LP, Halve Maen is still their masterpiece though. I highly recommend that if you're looking for some quiet noise.

Icewater Scandal - No Handle 2LP
Nice noisy rock, girl singer. Lots of clangy guitars and long songs (by way of lots of parts, not stretching or droning...). The jury's still out, but the 2nd listen is treating me pretty well.

other listenings:

Franz Ferdinand - s/t CD
you know, I was crazy about it, put it away before I could get sick of it, pulled it back out a month later and its even better than I ever thought it was. how 'bout that.

Modest Mouse - Good News... CD
borrowed from a friend, and I'm getting a huge kick out of this album. Fantastic... I need to return it to my friend and just buy my own damn copy.

French Kicks - Trial of the Century CD
I'm still waiting for this to hit me. It sounds, on first few listens, like a watered down One-Time Bells which I love so much. It may take time, though.

The only other TLS album I've heard was the one Matador issued a few years back. Based on that, the new one is vastly different. I described it to someone else as sounding like PiL's Second Edition without Lydon wailing atop the music. This isn't the case for the *entire* record, mind you, but definitely in spots.

A shame, she must be doing something these days, let's bring her back. I always thought she was the "muscial" strength in the early Breeders stuff. I mean, they were all great too. Dusty Trails is smart, sexy Bacharachian loungey tunes. More a curioso than anything, but v. nice on the ear.

Today, rockin some detroit styles:

Saturday Looks Good To Me - s/t CD
Paik - The Orson Fader CD

just got back from tour, listened to a lot of stuff, mostly arty farty stuff that my bandmates brought along (cause you know, in the middle of a 12-hour drive, the new Loscil CD on Kranky'll really pep shit up). Usually I'm all about that droney psychey stuff, but I was itching for rock music the whole time...

anyway, shit I bought wicked cheap and used on tour:
the aforementioned two CDs (SLGTM & Paik), also:
The Apes - Tapestry Mastery CDep
Life Without Buildings - Any Other City
Superchunk - No Pocky For Kitty CD
Th' Faith Healers - Lido CD
Spiny Anteaters - All Is Well CD
Sloan - Smeared CD

I also acquired a lot of very dubious CDs which I traded with members of some very dubious bands. Its hard to say "no, sorry, y'all kinda suck" to a very nice person asking to trade CDs. because hey, they end up with our stuff and that's always good. Some of the trades went very well though... one day I'm gonna compile a master review list of every CD I've traded or been given at shows.

I think so? I read a review of it in Arthur Magazine and that's how they spelled it. As I look around at other sites, though, I see that no one else has. And Arthur is free, man, so who knows if you can trust 'em. It's in the issue with Devendra Banhart (!) on the cover. Ian Svenonious wrote a zodiac and most of them are awesome. C'mon, tell yr sign (everybody) and I'll type it out + buy you drinks!

Taurus (mine): "The Bull." You've ruled the roost for a while now, epitomizing toughness, rutting pompously about and snorting at those who defy you. Unfortunately, due to newly perfected cloning techniques, you've been rendered redundant- there is no need for the bull anymore. Your sperm is irrelevant; they've got Elsa's uber-bovine DNA in the lab. Soon there will no Taurus astrological column, because there will be no bull. You will be a picture on the Sierra Club's wall, toasted by donors and environmentalist fund raisers, your name accompanied by tremulous piano plonking. As everyone relates their stories, praising your noble characters, only I will have the guts to say you were an asshole.

dykehouse cd is great. i was totally expecting some more stuff along the lines of matthew dear at first, but was pleasantly surprised by the shoegazer-ness. sounds like mbv meets the postal service at times, with a little bit of rocketship thrown in there. then the lyrics, which can be a bit corny at times, start to hit you. i could listen to "when you come" over and over. in fact, i have. "chain smoking" is ridiculous, but it's also very addictive. and the songs are strong throughout - not too much filler and certainly not frontloaded. i can picture this guy being tormented throughout his youth for his last name.

also vesper- i live west of charlottesville, work in that town. in a record store. i'll be at the neko case show in richmond tomorrow night.

my iPile on the name-brand portable digital music player so far today:

The Hold Steady - Almost Killed Me
The first listen convinced me it was the worst album of the year, but I couldn't stop listening over and over, its fucking tremendous. I guess it reminds me of Bongwater or King Missle or something, but somehow the spoken lyrics and pompous bar rock backing it up meshes so well, its fucking unstoppable. Its Lifter Puller in a hard rock disguise, so if you know them, you know what you're getting into. Highly recommended.

18th Dye - Tribute to a Bus
Its too bad their albums are totally unavailable anymore, I'd tell people to get them. Well, you can still get them on Emusic. so you should. awesome noisy guitar pop. from Germany!

The American Flag - s/t
Its like... Guided by Montreal! Smart, nasally vintage-style pop songs played too fast.

Yeah, that American Flag CD is rock solid. gets better and better with every listen.

I was trying to see if it was still even in print, but I don't know. Insound has it on CD and LP, but with the original band name and title which is "Herschel Savage and the American Flag," which indicates that they actually don't have it. The longer band name was briefly used and only on the first, long-gone pressing.

although you never know, maybe nobody bought them and they're just gathering dust at Insound HQ..

holy crap its quiet today...

anyway, I'll break the silence with another boring listening post.
on the iPood:

Spoon - Soft Effects
"Waiting for the Kid to Come Out" is so totally awesome its not even funny. the reverbed and slap-echoed handclaps in the middle there? whoo! Is it just me though, or is "Get Out of the State" a lot quieter than the rest of the EP? maybe its just a glitch in the pod...

Mazarin - A Tall-Tale Storyline
Not as boring as I thought it was when I first heard it, its got some really nice stuff going on. Good for workin.

Lilys - Live at Maxwells, 6/5/04
One of the nice things about Emusic lately is their recent additions of some nice quality live shows. The Lilys' setlist is great, but damn, Kurt, get a band and hold on to it! I've seen them 4 times now and its always new players, even shows a few months apart. no wonder it always sounds under-rehearsed. It sounds like there's a lady in the band doing backing vocals on this recording too. A nice different touch. But yeah, the band isn't sloppy so much as underrehearsed. Luckily the songs are strong enough that it doesn't matter, but it'd be great to see a crack band bash the songs out right.

The Apes - Tapestry Mastery
Totally awesome. I used to get this band's CDs and lament how not that great they were, but then I'd see them live and they'd kill. This new EP? it kills. Their live show kills more than ever, by the way. I can't wait for the next LP.

The Hold Steady - Almost Killed Me
again. still totally awesome.

9000, the kerrier district album is really good. sounds a whole lot like metro area, but less warm/funky overall. i knew luke vibert mainly for his dn'b before (as plug), which is as different from this as you can get. but i dig it.

the komeda album is pretty good too. i've never really listened to them much before but the second song "blossom" is damn catchy. great shuffling groove, kinda reminds of me of motown.

I really like the Swans albums I have. Pretty dark, but great when you're in the mood for them.

Children Of God, World Of Skin (2 x Album CD re-issue, 80's stuff I think)
Soundtracks For The Blind (final swans album, incredible - from '96)
The Great Annihilator (From '95 - quite accesible and almost catchy. Well Swans catchy anyway)

i agree. there's a lot of depth to it, but nothing hits you over the head. i even like the drone jam that's getting panned in every review, though it makes "the late greats" feel pretty out of place. also been listening to:

spacemen 3 - playing with fire
frankenixon - depth perception <-- excellent
dykehouse - midrange

somewhere in between - it's all kompakt artists doing new remixes of singles from the back catalogue. i'm really enjoying it. it's a good mix of the kompakt styles - some ambient stuff, some poppier cuts, some mellower techno, and some serious bangers (esp. DJ koze remixing reinhard voigt). and a total steal at $18 for 2 discs.

I have, it's a different beast, but still one of the best albums of this year. much slower moving songs, more contemplative, but once you adapt to it's tricks, it really comes alive. Amorphous is really one of the best "slow burn" albums I've heard in a while.
