kristin hersh/throwing muses.....she defintely got the female/alternative band thing going....
I think pitchfork put it best though:
If you're looking for Kristin Hersh's impact on music in the '90s, you won't have to look far. It can be found in the versed resignation of Polly Jean Harvey, or the pompous wailing of Courtney Love, or the countrified yowling of the Geraldine Fibbers' Carla Bozulich, or any of the countless other vocalists who've learned to eccentrically accentuate the negative

could you put a quick run down of your definitions of those terms, or were you caught in a moment of whimsical fancy? like what's the difference between "pioneer" and "groundbreaking?"

those who produce pioneering music wear racoon caps. Groundbreaking artists make music sans caps.

the Deal sisters (Pixies, Throwing Muses) ... I think they must have influenced the bulk of female artists to come after, but to be fair I should really go back to artists like Chrissie Hynde and Joan Jett for starting the path
Radiohead (post-OK Computer) ... they've had a healthy influence on furthering an interesting direction in bands like Sigur Ros, Coldplay and The Flaming Lips
Steve Albini (of Big Black, Shellac and Rapeman) ... I know he's a producer now, but I think his influence is still just as important ... from what I've read, he's responsible for getting the Pixies to get their act together in the first place
I hate to say it, but REM
I'm sure I'm leaving some out. A couple of years ago I would have put Beck on my list too, but I don't know anymore ...

ný batterí--I was pleased to see Skywave on your list. They are helping carry the torch of shoegazing into the 21st century. I can only add one name to the list.
Mercury Rev
The greats of indie:
Stephen Malkmus
Issac Brock
Doug Martsch
Anyone from My Bloody Valentine
Frank Black
D.C. Berman
Britt Daniel
and not widely acclaimed (or even acclaimed at all)
John Davis of Superdrag
Mainstream Indie greats:
Beck
Wayne Coyne
(Pre Kid A) Thom Yorke
Damon Albarn (Gorillaz?, it never happened)
The overrated geniuses:
Billy Corgan-
He probably doesn't believe in sexual intercourse because he thinks that he can do it better himself.
(Post O.K. Computer) Thom Yorke--
I wonder if in 'Hail to the Thief' is he is refering to whoever stole his band's guitars?
and of course Liz Phair.

I think Jim O'Rourke is one of the most important figures in independent music right now. His work from Gastr Del Sol to his solo albums to Sonic Youth (with the exception of the lackluster NYC Ghosts and Flowers - though NOT a 0.0 as the 'Fork would have us believe) to Wilco have been nothing short of genius.
-edit to add-
Kevin Shields of MBV as well.
For those of you talking about Skywave: is this the same one that came out of Fredericksburg, VA? If so, I go to college in that town and have friends that know them.

someone giving props to Panoply Academy? yow!
I love love love all the stuff they've done, but now Darin Glenn seems to have fallen off the radar as far as i can tell.. the Legionnaires minus Darin are now in Turn Pale, which is OK, but where is Mr. Panoply himself?
its all about What We Defend and No Dead Time... I'll have to listen to those when I get home..

here are words from Marty of Panoply and Turn Pale:
We've been on a long hiatus. We've recorded half an album and are slowly writing the other half. We recently had a track released on Exotic Fever Records out of DC.
It's a benefit for the Vietnam Veterans of America. Our new album could be out as soon as this fall and we might be playing some shows then. There's also been talk of releasing all of our 7"s, comp tracks, and previously unreleased material on CD.
so.....
perhaps expect something new from them later this year??
maybe even a tour???
that would rock.
