I've herd alot of backlash from Mark E. Smith from The Fall. saying that Pavement copied them. I really don't see much in common between them. does anyone think theres anything similar? i mean experimental-wise maybe. But The Fall shared ideas with Can, Van Der Graaf and everyone.

don't know to much about the fall. even though SM told me himself to listen to them and that I'd be a fan. I never bothered to check them out.

listen to the fall's "new face in hell." (it's on grotesque). then listen to "conduit for sale!" the mark e. smith complaint should be fairly obvious.

In truth I think to call Pavement a Fall rip-off band is one of the single greatest injustices in modern music. Pavement were far far more inventive than that. Some of the songs like "Hit the Plane Down" and "Two States" have an obvious Fall influence but they went so far beyond that, they just werent a one dimensional band. What about "Range Life" or "We Dance" for example?

I don't think anyone but Mark E. Smith has ever called them a Fall rip-off, and he's just a grumpy gus. There are times, sure, when the influence shows up, but no one seriously thinks they were a carbon copy.

Personally I prefer Pavement. I much prefer the boy Malkmus' wry sense of humour to Mark's cynical of everything world view.

Theyre both equally nonsensical and meaningless but Malkmus' have a sense of humour that I like so you there go.

Early Pavement very clearly was influenced by The Fall. Then they developed more of their own voice. No real controversy there.

Also, I think MES would throw his pint at you and then burn you with his cigarette if you were to suggest to him his lyrics were nonsensical. Those old Rough Trade-era Fall tracks are incredibly dense, lyrically, full of literary and political references. He definitely wasn't just rambling like SM.

I love Pavement dearly, one of my favorite bands, but The Fall are a juggernaut of modern music that shan't be trifled with.

You should pay a visit to Paul's CDs. 4526 Liberty Ave in Bloomfield. A good number of folks there are very familar with the Fall and should be able to get you on the right track.

You do mean Paul's, right? Steve Keene made a whole bunch of Pavement trees for us to promote Brighten The Corners. We sent them to stores that we deal with.

Well they were never for sale so I'd say your chances might be rather slim.

Why do Cat Power fans say things like this?

Why do Cat Power fans say things like this? They're instinctively more prone to utilize hyperbole in every conversation than a lot of the rest of us are. Chan doesn't help matters much by calling her album The Greatest.

:D Nice.

Even the album covers were derivative. And yes, believe me, there are many people who think that Pavement was just that. Derivative. Certainly they are not the only band that gets pegged as derivative, and I can understand the tag to a degree, but almost all music is in some way derivative of the music that came before it.

I could care less. I think Pavement had their own sound, even if a major ingredient was The Fall's.
