Hey all
Some of you may or may not have noticed that our beloved Chan has been nominated for Best International Female at this year's Brit Awards (US readers: it's like the British Grammys).
This is nothing short of MENTAL. We are totally shocked, not to mention overjoyed. One of our own amongst the major label million-sellers!
She's up gainst Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Pink and Nelly Furtado (!!!!).
We couldn't be happier that Chan's music is starting to reach places like the Brit Awards. Three cheers for Chan!

what?? are you serious?
what is more fascinating is that all of those artists are mainstream and marketed by big record labels. chan is getting popular because of her voice and writing skills.

I guess this is a question for Matador: How many copies of The Greatest have been sold so far globally? So there's the first issue, and re-issue, would the album download sales count in the tally? I'm guessing total 300k global.

Mediatraffic says about 189k for 2006, so unless there's been a glut of sales over the last week or two......?
As far as I know Mediatraffic covers about 95% of sales, so the 189k takes that into consideration. Maybe the Matador folk know something Mediatraffic doesn't?

That's brilliant! they nominated Bob Dylan aswell for an award which was out of the ordinary. Will she be going to the ceremony? I think she's got a good chance of winning it.

Moon Pix, you can't vote for her unfortunately.
It's now all in the hands of the voting members of the BPI (British Phonographic Institute).
Still, she's going to be in attendance, so it'll be pretty funny to see Chan amongst Pink, Beyonce, Aguilera and Furtado when they do the nominations. I'm willing to bet she pulls a funny face at the camera.

Jackofficer (hehe), Maybe mediatraffic is only domestic or North America,
remember I asked Matador to include digital album (not individual tracks) sales plus both issues in the tally, so what's the total so far Patrick??

It all reminds of Elliott Smith at the Gramys.
Lets all cross our fingers for the same result.:)

Go Chan!
When she doesn't win, there will finally be definite and final evidence that the commercial music industry isn't to be saved.

Wether Chan wins this award or not, the thing thats most impressed me about this whole caboodle is that statement that Chan issued. She praised the other nominees as "professional, talented, exceptional women". She didnt take it as an oppurtunity to turn this into some kind of David vs Goliath battle between the indies and the majors.
This whole episode has taught me to be less snobby about music.

And she's right. Nelly Furtado has written some great songs in the past. Yet it is such a shame that producers like Timbaland, who do not hasitate to sometimes steal their 'creations' from less known musicians and recycle everything now and then, manage to get a firm grip on what we hear on the radio. As long as people are in it for the money, I sure will be 'snobby' about the music industry. But I still kinda like the new Pussycat Dolls song.

I like nelly furtados songs but why did she have to sex it up pussy cat dolls style for her recent singles? it's almost like there's some unwritten rule about female artists selling more without their tops off.

Id say the lyrics you tend to find in songs by some of these artists have a negative influence but the Sex Pistols sang "No Future for you" and nobody said anything about it being pessimistic.
I know what you mean but hopefully those little girls will grow out of it when theyre a little older.

yeh i suppose we all go through those phrases, when i was ten i was singing 'if you wanna be my lover you better get with my friends' and now i'm all like 'metal heart, you're not worth a thing'. age eh!

What angers me is the prominence of male guitar rock drivel at the ceremony and winning awards. Why honour The Killers? why not leave it to their own country to do that, in fact all their doing is coming over and rehashing our 80's rock in the most watered down pompous fashion and we are giving them awards for that? it really riles me.
Why do they put in good acts like Jarvis and Chan if their just going to ignore them and go with the lowest common denominator, it'd be better if they just left them out all together. It's like they want credibility but they don't want to give out awards to the outsiders. I don't understand how James morrison could steal Jarvises well deserved best male award? these James Morrisons and Paulo Nuttinis are just pretty boys rehashing croaky voiced icons like Rod Stewart, i know it's a cliche to say but they probably arn't writing their own music plus their all about 12.
I'm glad Amy Winehouse won best female because for her age she is a terrific song writing talent and ballsy female who doesn't submit to the water down americanised branch of passive femininity that the christinas and britneys of this world dish out. It's a shame Lily Allen didn't win anything cause she really did do very well this year and summed up the populous music taste of 2006.

So moonpix, when it got to best international female and they announced Cat Power as a nominee, the camera didn't point her out sitting in the audience?
I thought that's how awards shows worked, maybe she wasn't at the ceremony, just the after parties!

Has anybody found any pictures of her on the red carpet? I want to see her frock.:)

Caught the Brits tonight on CBC tv here in Canada, the Canadian tv host was on the red carpet and Chan stopped to speak with him, she was talking about hoping Bob Dylan would be there (again), was shaking her hair saying "I cut my bangs wrong! I put on too much eye make up! You know women..."
To be honest, she was looking pretty rough! Her tan was fading/peeling whatever and the thick sludge of eye makeup rivaled Amy Winehouse. Actually have never seen her look worse, hope she's ok, didn't seem happy.
We've all got our bad days, right?
Worse than in the Avedon photos? Oh man.
Rough? I think she´s cool.327

Of course she's cool! The coolest in fact, decent pic here, although u can see what I mean about the sludge around the eyes! The flash bulb in this
still shot kinda blanches the face, in the little interview I saw on tv, well,
she looked like heck and i think she was over/underwhelmed by the red carpet thing, was really anxious, uncomfortable. That's the way we like her right?

Chan was on really good form actually, I think she knew that Canadian TV guy so she felt a little more relaxed about having a rambling chat with him.
Events like that are nerve-wracking, but Chan had a pretty good time I think. She was at the table for the whole of the ceremony itself, just taking it all in, whooping for Bob Dylan's nomination etc. We knew we didn't really stand a chance against the competition, but that didn't stop me from hitting the table and unleashing a stream of profanities when they called out Nelly Furtado's name :)
Obviously I'm biased, but I thought she looked incredible.

I think i saw the back of Chan's head as Furtado walked past to collect the award, she was clapping, or maybe i didn't.
I hope she had a nice visit to London anyway
