Since the favorite guitar performance question seemed like a good idea, I thought I'd offer up a similar question...what song has your favorite display of Malkmus's voice and lyrics. You can answer for reasons of great lyrics, or great vocal performance, or both.

My knee-jerk response is "Transport is Arranged" but "Carrot Rope," "Grounded" and "Stop Breathin" are pretty close behind.

Favorite lyrics ala Pavement/Malkmus would be...

"Lies and betrayals/Fruit covered nails/Electricity and Lust"-Trigger Cut

I love his voice and lyrics on AT&T and Grounded...brilliant!

Hmmm...oh yeah, and "Strings of Nashville"...one of the most beautiful songs that Malkmus has ever put his voice to.

There are a lot of great moments to choose from but I think the first verse of "Shady Lane" might be my favorite. Brilliant.

Embrace the senile genius
Watch him re-invent the wheel
I don't need your summary acts, summary acts,
To fit into the narrative age

BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So many fortresses and ways to attack

ey.
Sin Taxi always struck a chord with me lyrics-wise.
His Singing in At&T is the best in that direction.

I always liked that one line in "Blue Hawaiian":

"Put the bark in the dog and you've got a guardian..."

The lyrics to "Elevate Me Later" are probably my favorite in the Malkmus/Pavement catalog.

Maybe...

From "You Are A Light"
Watch out for the gypsy children in electric dresses they're insane.
I hear they live in crematoriums
and smoke your remains.

-or-

From "In The Mouth Of A Desert"
I've been crowned, the king
of id and it is all we have so
wait
to hear my words,
the diamond shark i could
open it up if it's up and down

Well, I guess I can scratch those lyrics off my favorites...

And to think, for 10 plus years I've been laughing at the "King of Id." No wonder he didn't know what I was talking about when I called him that...
