Why is Cat Powers myspace page so lame? I want to add a song to my profile, but.... I can`t. WHY?
we run the Cat Power MySpace profile (as it says on the page). we typically don't allow people to add songs to their profile, but thinking about it - it doesn't really make any sense. i'll change that.
we only have one song up at Chan's request.
what else should we be doing to liven it up?

My 2 cents:
I don`t see any reason not to load it with a couple more songs from different albums, and make it so that those songs can be added to profiles. I mean, it seems petty, but I have had friends ask me about artists from which I have had songs posted on my profile (one of which fell so in love with an artist that he found on my MySpace that he actually later got a tattoo for that band... Lucero). I guess if Chan only wants one song up, that`s that, but if there is going to be a Cat Power MySpace, why not take advantage of it to get her music out there? I have played Cat Power songs for various friends, and they are always surprised to find out who it is, because between V for Vendetta, those diamond adds, Gap adds, etc... she has a pretty recognizable sound. I`m sure getting her music out there through MySpace will bring in a few new diehards, and will definitely at least make a few more people put a name to that voice.
Also, why not let people post comments? Or why not create a Top 8/12/16/whatever that includes the Matador MySpace, and other bands on Matador or other bands that she has toured with? Maybe add a couple more photos? I would also imagine it would be good to have a Discography, with a link to the Matador online store, so people can buy her music (I`m honestly not sure how many people would actually buy the music, but it`s worth investing the 5 minutes to make it happen and find out).
For as much as people knock MySpace, it is one legit marketing tool, and it`s not like it would take much in the way of upkeep. Her page doesnt need to be anything super fancy like some bands out there, but face it... MySpace has pull, and word spreads like crazy through it.

i think you should listen to this guy ... according to his myspace page he has a degree in the music industry!
more pictures would be nice, and some of her favourite bands/ matadors in the top 8 so we can have a nosey at them also

I thought myspace was for people/artists who put up their own stuff, made their own page, as it stands, CP's page is just a link to matador which is fine by me, Chan has publicly expressed her lack of enthusiasm for all things
internet, so I definitely wouldn't want it made to look like she did it.

Since embedding music in a web page is just about one of the most painfully obnoxious things in the world, I would have assumed that not allowing such a thing was nothing more than a nod to good taste.

While I may study the business behind music, they (Matador) are the business behind music. I would hope that they may know a little better than myself.

Do you really believe that all the bands on MySpace that are signed to a label (be it major or indie) manage their own MySpace pages?

It`s MySpace. A) Matador can make it so it doesnt automatically start, B) you don`t have to visit random peoples individual profiles, and if your friends add music, maybe you should give them that spiel about being tacky, and C) it`s MySpace.
these are all great ideas and for many of our artists whom we run pages for we are pretty proactive - even running "friends-only" discounts on CDs and merch via the matador store, etc.
i think all the content ideas are great and it's stuff that we have on both the Matador site and the official Cat Power web site (which we maintain), but a lot of people are discovering music through MySpace... so having that stuff there makes sense.
the truth is, it took some convincing to get Chan to even let us build a profile for Cat Power. so, anything that we do to make it seems like her personal endeavour... the more we get into the area that Chan wanted to avoid - that people were actually becoming "her friend" or getting personal via myspace.
we have to basically walk a fine line and not make people think they are actually "friending" Chan Marshall or Cat Power. so, we try to make it very straight-forward... announcing tour dates, events, good things and posting content. so, no selecting top friends, listing personal music influences or anything.... just black and white information.
we avoid anything that might be construed as conversational or two-way communication. so re: approving comments....most comments are impersonal, weird and sometimes creepy. that's why we don't approve any comments.
and lastly, while i don't know chan's personal views on myspace nor discussed it directly with her... there's probably some truth in the "good taste" angle mentioned above.

Sounds like Cat Power fans to me. Why the f*** do so many of them act like this? Ive met her a few times and not once has she ever told me that I creeped her out, in fact she's always been very happy to see me again. Why don't these people act normal instead of like a bunch of little Hinckleys?

Definitely understandable, but if you simply add content in the form of media, not anything personal about her like a write up or anything, and keep the disclaimer about it being run by Matador and not Chan... I would hope you`d be OK? Also, I`d like to think that her fans are with it enough to understand that it is MySpace, pure and simple, not Chan.

you'd think so, but judging the emails that are sent and comments we don't approve, it's quite the opposite.
people think that they are dealing with the person....even though we make it clear the profile is run by the label.

Well because they all want to fuck Jodie Foster. Ok that's crass but I doubt that all those popular but ugly female singer-songwriters out there that everyone's heard of don't inspire this particular form of 'reverence.'
Excellent point about Myspace from Adam. In another generation, people won't even care about rationalizing that they really know the differences between what real friends and 'added' friends are. Add this lil' phenomena to the unique pathology that seems to afflict all too many CP (Meowist) fans and you have A PERFECT STORM!*
*sorry but i still love it.
