Not one, not two, but three Cat Power events are planned for this weekend in Manhattan. First up--Friday, February 2nd at the Museum of Modern Art is this shindig:
PopRally presents Doug Aitken's "sleepwalkers" Happening, featuring a performance by Cat Power.
This event, hosted by Doug Aitken and PopRally, includes a reception, musical performances by Cat Power and street drummers Ryan Donowho and Hishan Bharoocha, storytelling by Melissa Plaut, and other surprise guests. A unique commissioned poster, created for the event by the Chicago artist Mat Daly in collaboration with Doug Aitken, will be distributed to guests who attend.
Attendees are encouraged to visit Doug Aitken: sleepwalkers before the event. Presented by MoMA and the New York-based public art organization Creative Time, sleepwalkers is a major public artwork comprising eight large-scale moving images projected onto six of the Museum's exterior walls, enlivening the building's architecture with the nocturnal journeys of five city dwellers played by Tilda Swinton, Donald Sutherland, Chan Marshall (Cat Power), Seu Jorge, and Ryan Donowho. The exhibition is on view nightly, January 16-February 12, from 5:00 until 10:00 p.m., and is visible from various vantage points around the Museum, on Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth streets, and in The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. The Sculpture Garden is open to the public free of charge during these nightly projections.
Tickets are $10 and are available via TicketWeb. A small number of tickets are also available at the lobby information desk at MoMA. Tickets and photo identification will be required for admittance. Tickets are limited and will not be sold at the door.
As if hobnobbing with the art intelligentsia weren't enough for one weekend, Chan is following it up with a two night solo stand at the Hiro Ballroom on February 4th and 5th. The 4th is sold out, but at last check there are still tickets for Monday's show, so if you get a move on, you can score some HERE (http://www.ticketweb.com/user/?region=NYC&query=schedule&venue=hiroballroom).
