The Ponys - Turn The Lights Out (Pre-ordered!) (LP)
Me too. Thanks for the rec, Paul.
As an aside, it never fails to astonish me just what a price differential there is between the US and here. IIRC, the USD/EUR exchange rate was 1.301:1 (or thereabouts) at cob , so a cd at USD12 is roughly EUR9. The cheapest of the cheap introductory offers on new releases here are at least 50% more expensive. Even with shipping added, my vinyl pre-order was cheaper than it would be locally.
Also - The Wire Season 1 <-- 65% off on Amazon! Free Shipping! I'm scoring the bargains tonight :)
group doueh, "guitar music from the western sahara" lp - highly recommended

Face The Truth LP
Jimmy Smith & Wes Montgomery Dynamic Duo LP
Sonny Rollins and The Modern Jazz Quartet Vol. 2 LP
Broadcast Future Crayon 2LP
in the mail:
Vince Guaraldi - Boy Named Charlie Brown LP
Brokeback - Looks at the Bird LP
The Sonny record is a little dissapointing as he only guests on two tracks (and the Modern Jazz Quartet is a little soft and vibe-y for my taste).

Its unbelievable, one of the best purchases I've made in ages! I plan to get Volume 2 as soon as I'm back at Twisted Village. This one's the "Bollywood Funk" collection, and Volume 2 is the "Bollywood Jazz and Rock'n'Roll" which sounds at least as promising...
Highly highly recommended!

Excellent! I was afraid track descriptions like "abstract safari chase percussion" and "chase surf funk visiting the elephant circus" in the liner notes might be too good to be true.

Finally got around to getting this. A really nice package, but I'm a bit weirded out by Gaffney's repeated claim that Sebadoh is HIS band in the liner notes.

Georgia interests me for obvious reasons and Id like to visit Atlanta one day:) It's entirely within the realm of possibility that Chan served me pizza at Fellini's during one of my Atlanta visits in the early 90s, so... nyah!

I only said it because she was friends with Benjamin of Smoke. She was never in Smoke but I always get the impression they were close and apparently it was Benjamin who advised her to do the Joan of Arc shows.
Shes on the DVD extras of the film they made about him too.
...apparently it was Benjamin who advised her to do the Joan of Arc shows. Some friend, ha!
I dunno, I've just never been a "superfan" of any one artist (except maybe for U2 when I was in high school, but even then I don't think I talked about them all the time). And since I don't have any experience with that kind of superfan-ness, it just seems odd when I see you bring her up at every opportunity.

Like what Paul said, pretty much. The most tenuous link is all it takes to bring up Chan, and it seems borderline pathological. had I read davidleeroths post I would have assumed "musical connections", not "who they were maybe acquainted with personally", you know? It seems a little, I dunno, overeager.
Yet its totally true that you're among the mellower and more open-to-life-outside-of-Chan superfans. I don't mean to be mean, it just fascinates me! I just can't imagine what that kind of focus on one artist even feels like!

I think you all are a little to eager to point fingers. I have a healthy obsession with Pavement and I bring up Stephen Malkmus in conversation about once a day, but that doesn't mean I have to have someone analyze my tendencies and make fun. Let the man be, he just has a passion. One that he wishes to spread to others, like DavidLeeRoth here.

Here's something to consider: don't refer to musicians, authors, or celebrities of any kind solely by their first names. Use their full names, which denotes that you are not, you know, friends with them. In text when referring back continuously, abbreviate by using the last name. Only call friends, relatives, acquaintances, and intimates by their first name. I'm not friends with Alec Baldwin, so I wouldn't talk about how "Alec was great in Glengarry Glen Ross." You're not friends with Chan Marshall, calling her Chan is just creepy.
Bbbbbut I saw a Baldwin (not Alec, can't remember which one) at a party recently!
I have a healthy obsession with Pavement and I bring up Stephen Malkmus in conversation about once a day, but that doesn't mean I have to have someone analyze my tendencies and make fun. Yeah, um... I should give you a pass on that because why? Malkmus uber-reverance is second to none in my ever-growing list of things people do to annoy me.

well, Lukas, I do remember you being at least as obsessive about SM and being called on it in much the same way..
I don't mean to start a shitstorm!
Also, I don't have a single artist I'm more enthusiastic about overall forever. One week I'll be more excited about one person, another week another. And then of course there's the pantheon of "favorite bands" but I tend to be more excited about learning about more and more music rather than just digging deep on one artist.
that's just how I operate, though...

I heard a track off of it on WFMU (I think it was Evan "Funk" Davies' show). It's a record by Chris Stamey of the d.b's with YLT as his backing band. I downloaded what I think to be the original release from eMusic, but if I understand correctly, it was rereleased under the moniker "The Chris Stamey Experience" with extra tracks by Yep Roc a year after its initial release. I'm digging it, especially the Television cover ("Venus").

No, I got each one seperately used for $12 bones each. A bit of a hefty price to pay, but it seemed worth it.

nah, he'd just be pretty rich, I'm guessing!
Also, Salman, that's cool about the Love Peace and Poetry sets. I feel like those are pretty solid all the way through, so $108 isn't a huge price to pay for 9 sick international garage comps...
I've heard the Brazilian, Mexican, Japanese and Turkish ones. What are the other 5?

It's definitely been reissued on CD recently with the two sides of their 1968 debut 45 as bonus tracks. I don't think any other CD version has included those.

Two recent LP "reissues" One on Acme (most likely kind of legit, and decently priced) and one on Tapestry (most likely not entirely legit and very expensive as well).
It is a great record.

Btw... you guys all know I hate reissues, especially vinyl reissues of classically recorded analog joyousness like this record. And I have to admit, I've never heard a Deram original.
But I have to say, if you can score one of the late '90s pressings from the Korean label Si-Wan of this particular record, it is *amazing*. And one of my most purist friends says it competes with the Deram. Mind you, that's hearsay. But if you can find the Si-Wan, buy it!
Patrick
Yup, it's the vinyl on Homestead. Found, unopened, for cheap at Twisted Village. Haven't listened yet, but that Souled American LP is great!

Well, I'm not sure how much one is supposed to pay for these things, but it was $30, which to me is well worth it. The sleeve is in very good condition and the record itself is near mint.
This actually brings up a subject I've been wondering about. How do you as a collector determine what you should pay for a record? I've been looking at all these 60's and 70's Brazilian records on GEMM and while there are records I'd really like to have, the prices can be somewhat steep and I'm wondering if there are more economical ways of acquiring them.

I myself don't make a habit of hitting up these things specifically, but over the years have stumbled on a few "stoop sales" with some good record finds.
In terms of finding rare records the NYC area has always been a double edged sword. With such a large population of people from all over there always has been and always will be a ton of exotic, interesting records in the marketplace here, but you will almost never find them priced below their current or percieved value. Of course, in this internet age this is becoming a worldwide issue, so if you're looking for the heavy hitters you've got some soul searching to do on what you're comfortable with paying etc.

The internet, fortunately or unfortunately, is making prices rational. While this undermines the chances of getting a bargain, it also decreases the chances of getting ripped off.
High prices on common items are being forced down (and some records previously thought "rare" are turning out to be common, as eBay draws them from their nooks and crannies)... and low prices on rare items are climbing.
The only problem is that the fixed costs of auctioning and shipping a single record are quite high... much higher than the cost of a record store in the old days keeping a record in its 99-cent bin (or even miscellaneous R). This means that the supercheap deals are dwindling fast.

The Stooges The Weirdness 2LP Well, of course the good tracks would be the ones exclusive to the vinyl.
Constantines/Unintended LP I'd never heard the Constantines before, but based on their side, consisting of 4 Neil Young covers, that was probably a good thing. Awful, awful soulless indie rock. The Unintended side, consisting of four Gordon Lightfoot songs, by these relative veterans-- Rick White (Eric's Trip, Elevator), Greg Keelor (Blue Rodeo) and the Sadies (the Sadies)-- show the kidz how it's supposed to be done.
Optimo Walkabout CD Only listened to the first 1/3, but good stuff so far. Only Wilkes had anything to do with the mix, though, Twitch fans.

I bought the new 2CD Guided By Voices "Live in Austin" set. Its, um, OK. I think those shows were incredible to experience firsthand, but hearing him slurring and forgetting the words to I Am A Scientist loses its charm when you're stuck in traffic and just looking to rock.

Releasing live albums in the age of torrents is as weird as releasing regular albums in the age of torrents. Some bands may allow for the material to be free, some might not be so stoked on it. A live album, also has to be recorded, mixed, performed, which separates it from a mere bootleg. Also, I think assuming everyones a savvy taper/torrenter isn't the best marketing a band can do. Hell, to this day there are still "official" releases of Dead shows (some of those Dicks Picks CDs are stunning), because the tapes/torrents will only take you so far.

My favorite CD so far this year was Neil Young's "Live At Massey Hall." I've never understood why people expect live music to be free. I guess it has something to do with an idea that live performances are substandard listening to studio albums. But for a lot of great bands, (The Who, Cheap Trick) half their reputation rests on live albums that were better than their studio counterparts.

i think it also has to do with old school ideas that performances are temporary and can't be commodified in the same way that a studio recording can.

not that studio recordings aren't also performances, but there is something about liveness that a lot of people once thought (and i guess still think) dams up the circulation of products.
-edit again-
not that johansen necessarily thinks this, just speaking generally.
a show is a shared experience. regardless of how much production is done after the fact, no one mixes the 'live' out of a recording whose value is bound up to a large degree in the feeling generated. so people (in the abstract) that participate on some level in the creation of what becomes a commodity alienated from and sold back to them are understandably uncomfortable. is this primarily a struggle between artists and fans? i'm not sure.

What labels are we looking at?
Hozac Records, run by Todd Novak and Brett Cross the dudes who used to publish Horizontal Action. They do a tremendous job with the packaging of the first 100 records, the spider 7" came with a booklet and an armband, the white savage record came in a fur sleeve, i don't remember what was up with the volt record. You may want to contact them quick because i'm guessing they're probably sold out and you'll have to find a copy via whomever is distributing the records.

Back in the day, I was very into trading live bootlegs, but I've since become apathetic with the whole trading community. Aside from a few tapers, most recording are of low quality that only degrade the artist's actual performace. At the moment, I only know of one persion who 'produces' high quality live recordings, and when I say 'produces' - I mean that a matrix is used. A matrix is a multiple source recording that is blended to achieve the closest resemblence to the actual show. Modern bootlegs are pretty much unlistenable IMO, so as long as the quality sucks, recording shows should not be too much of an issue. They're just worthless recordings that are held dearly by obsessed fans who have lost sight of the quality of music they are listening to.
Sounds to me like it's a struggle between people who put their talent and sweat into recording music (i.e. "artists"), and people who believe that watching and listening as other people put their talent and sweat into recording music somehow makes them special (i.e. fans who suffer from a massively over-inflated sense of entitlement).

oh the solitary genius, whittling her vision in a vacuum completely outside of the rest of society. this particular system is built on commodity production and i don't expect musicians of all people to step up and be self-negating angels. outside of the compulsions at work here though, it seems to me that when the results of talent and sweat are displayed to the public, those performances necessarily become collaborative efforts, or else why not just sell what is recorded live in an empty studio? i'm talking about enjoying and sharing these experiences with others, not feeling *entitled* to profit off of someone else's hard work. on the contrary, i think your notion of entitlement reflects troubling and widespread conceptions that serve to relegate artists into their own special class, outside of and ultimately not especially concerned with their important role in the wider whole.
say we play little league together and my mom happens to videotape you tossing a brilliant 7 inning, 2 hit shutout. does that mean that everytime we show it to our friends you need to get paid $.99 an inning? wow that was the most strained analogy i've ever made.

I think you guys are getting a little too "lit-crit" on what's a pretty straightforward business transaction.
Bootlegs:
A performer plays copyrighted material in front of a (more often than not) paying crowd. If the performer consents to having that recording taped by said public (an increasing number of bands), then yes, that bootleg becomes public domain, in a way. There's an unspoken agreement that that specific recording will not be sold for profit, just shared, hence the existence of taper communities. For someone to sell said bootlegs would be heresy to these traders. I used to be one of them, but, like Lukas, I got tired of sifting through sub-par recordings of sub-par performances, though I did get a few amazing gems from that time.
Now, when a band or venue actually goes through the trouble of doing a proper job of recording the performance, meaning putting together a more competent mix of soundboard vs. room mics, mastering said mix, pressing said recordings onto wax or plastic and packaging it all up, and promoted, it becomes no different from a studio album, save for the source material. Now, if the show being mixed and mastered and packaged and released was also once available as bootleg, there's still no conflict, because they're essentially different things. Its not about the songs, its not about the performance, its about the way its delivered to the public.
There's the whole other issue of copyrights and whatnot, but that's a bit more technical than I know...
shit sorry - tino THANK YOU for defining the terms. it makes me realize how i muddied the waters with the little league part. bootlegging is something most everyone can agree on hopefully, irrespective of quality and distribution (assuming no sale). i still maintain that something, and not "freebird!" from the back, is captured and added to the end result, before mixing, artwork, etc., that complicates questions of individual ownership. i mean, if you want to get into it, i saw another asshole last night (not bright eyes) ripping dylan off with abandon. could i say any of those 'originals' were really even his, or a stalled attempt at contributing to the ancient and specialized human conversation that we call art? haha i'm kidding. i'll stop this now.

say we play little league together and my mom happens to videotape you tossing a brilliant 7 inning, 2 hit shutout. does that mean that everytime we show it to our friends you need to get paid $.99 an inning? No one involved in the little league game is earning a livelihood from it, and no one watches a little league game if they don't have a real-life personal connection to one of the players.
And sure, every single member of the audience does add something to a live recording; but if you replaced anyone in that audience with someone else, no one listening to the recording would know or care. In that regard, the audience's contribution is inconsequential.
.
and no one watches a little league game if they don't have a real-life personal connection to one of the players.

tino bebop, the sultan is very similar to the bbq lp on sounds of subterania (or the cd version on alien snatch). even though it was recorded with a "full band set up" it's still basically just mark. i was hoping for more of a mind controls type of thing but it's still a great record.

"Soul Limbo" is probably one of my favourite Booker T. & the MGs tracks. I remember for a long time the only way to get your hands on it was on Stax Gold.
Incidentally, Channel 4 have only had the test cricket for a few years. Prior to that the BBC had the rights and used "Soul Limbo" in the titles for as long as I can remember (i.e. back to the early '80s). Ah, being old.

The Thai Pop Spectacular CD really is spectacular. Radio India, for my ears, is a little tough to listen to all the way through regularly, the recording quality on so much of it is so shrill. The only one of the Radio series I can listen to just for listening's sake is Radio Thailand, which is what led me to get this one. It totally rules.
My other recommendations for Sublime Frequencies newbs are:
Radio Thailand
Group Doueh: Guitar Music of the Western Sahara (not sure if this is still available, its LP only)
Cambodian Cassette Archive

Took me a month to get it from D.M.R. and I must that it was worth the wait. "Nothing" gets me everytime. Feels like a Dylan or Beatles cut. Get it before its gone.

I love the shit out of The Strange Boys. The 7" is amazing, the CDr I got from them at their (amazing) live show is amazing. Its really wild that these kids (they're all between 17-19) seem like they were just taken right off the stage of some high school battle of the bands in 1965 and dropped off here. I can't wait to see them play again soon...
Yeah, I can only imagine they were hit real hard by those folk rock volumes of the Teenage Shutdown series. What's on that CDr?

the CDr has all four songs from the 7" plus 6 more songs, all at least as good (the last one is just a weird no-fi piano moan that sounds 80 years old), tremendous...
Dear Abby:
With the Canadian dollar being higher than the US one these days, I've been ordering many CDs from the states. Unfortunately, the US-made CDs place those barcode stickers on the top of the cases, so now I have this whole slew of CD cases that are really sticky because the labels come off, but the gluey residue does not, and I'd rather not place them on my shelf getting stuck to the other CDs around them. This morning one of my new CDs was stuck to an older one, and when I grabbed the newer CD, it pulled the older one as well, causing the case to crash to the floor and break into many pieces. Seeing how the US CD manufacturing scene isn't likely to start doing something sane, like place the stickers on the outside of the shrink-wrap, is there a tried and true method of getting this sticky gunk off the jewel cases?
Confounded in Canada.

Dear CiC (pronounced "sick"?),
Those stickers alone make buying on vinyl better than buying CDs, and make arguments about sound quality and appearance totally beside the point. There's no giant sticker over one end of an lp that will never come off properly. But if you must buy on CD, there are a couple methods of removing the sticky stuff--none of 'em are perfect, though.
1. There's a product called something like "Goo Gone" that's probably your best bet, but it's sort of expensive and smells funky.
2. Some people swear by scrubbing the affected areas with lighter fluid, but I'd only recommend this for non-smoking households.
3. Weirdly enough, scrubbing with peanut butter is supposed to work as well.
Good luck.
Your pal,
Abbie Hoffman

I use the label tape itself to pull up the leftover glue, but it can take a while. And you have to do it right away. If it's been smeared, you can forget it.

Scotch tape also works well for this. If the glue has been smeared, I rub it with my finger to get it to ball up somewhat then usually can get it off with Scotch tape.
