No, I'm not entirely sure, but I know it's finally getting a domestic release this April. I got hip to Gonzales' piano stuff based on his remix of Jamie Lidell's "Multiply." After keeping tabs on his stuff, I happened upon this cd in the used bin of my local record store. I was ecstatic.

It's not even April.
I'm surprised johansen smith hadn't started this thread by mid february, or at least selected 10 albums which were definitely going to make his top 5 at year-end ;)
I don't think I'm even finished with listening to records from last year.

Ah, good times, good times. I should seriously work PR, "This is the band's most crucial, bone-smelting album yet! Eight stars!"

I don't think I'm even finished with listening to records from last year.Ditto! I know of several things I still need to hear and the new Metalchicks album I ordered a few months ago from Japan only shipped this week (had to wait for Boredoms Super Roots 9 to be released so they could ship together).

Not a flawless album, by any means, but one I keep coming back to.

It's a little too early for me to make lists too, but the Blues Control and Sapat records are fantastic and would be on a list if I had to make one.
last year, this year, don't matter. time is just, like, an abstract concept, man.
and oh yeah - p.g. six, "slightly sorry" is the JAM! or something. seriously great record by our pal pat and his heavy awesome friends (including Matador Direct's own Helen Rush!).

I'm thinking Fred Anderson & Hamid Drake From The River To The Ocean is going to make a few lists. This could go into the beautifully recorded albums thread as well...
and since it doesn't really matter what year it was recorded, I'll at Safe At Home by the International Submarine Band. Great record.

It's not even April.Yeah? Well now it's May!
Can't stop spinning the new Sir Lord Baltimore album III Raw. Some of the songs date back to the never finished third album from the early 7T's and some are new (don't know which are which, though).
Also totally loving The Hidden Hand's The Resurrection of Whiskey Foote and, of course, Boredoms' Super Roots 9.
I'm sure there are several more but that's all that's popping into my head at the moment.
Oh, yeah: Lavender Diamond The Cavalry of Light EP

I just got back from Best Buy and they're out of Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat ;_;Terrible band name (I've been told the Knights Templar were accused of the cat butt kissing in their secret rituals) but a very cool record. You can check out MP3s at www.AquariusRecords.org and at their MySpace (but I don't recall the URL). The music is dark, electric folk and the vox are reminiscent of New Zealand's Headless Chickens.

The list of things that have rocked my boat so far this year (in no order)...
Times New Viking - Present The Paisley Reich CD
Sapat - Mortise and Tenon CD
Pink Reason - Cleaning the Mirror CD
Blues Control - Puff LP
Los Llamarada - The Exploding Now LP
The Cherry Blossoms - The Cherry Blossoms LP
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver CD
No clear-cut "best album" yet. Although the best record I've purchased this year is the Neil Young - Live at Massey Hall CD/DVD.

Amen on that. It's the first new CD I've bought in like three years. Still would have preferred a vinyl release, but that DVD almost makes up for it.

so what is it about them that sets them apart from everyone else? i've seen them and i think they're ok but what do you think sets them apart? i guess i don't understand the hype and unanimity behind them. but i'm notorious for having bad taste so please, educate me. i am looking forward to seein them saturday even if i'm so poor i can only have 2 schlitz.
not even enough for a schiltzkrieg.

Yoko Ono's Yes, I'm a Witch should've been on my list a coupla pages back.
Art Brut - It's a Bit Complicated
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
No, JUST KIDDING. These both suck. And I'm more than a little disappointed over the fact that the Art Brut one sucks, because I lurve them.

Spoon sounds like its gonna be a grower, like every other Spoon record. I have zero interest in Art Brut so I didn't even check it out...
Spoon sounds like its gonna be a grower, like every other Spoon record. I have zero interest in Art Brut so I didn't even check it out... Well, I just really don't like nu-Spoon that much. The '00s records aren't horrible per se, but they don't hook me like Telephono or Sneaks did. This one is just more of the same.
johansen smith
05-16-2007, 11:51 PM
new Spoon is the closest they've come to making a proper follow-up to A Series of Sneaks, really great stuff. I can't imagine disliking songs like "Eddie's Ragga" or "Don't Make Me a Target," but I rarely understand Paul and vice versa I'm sure.

The new Spoon record is really interesting. It's a much looser affair this time around compared to Gimme Fiction, and with titles like "Black Like Me" and "Don't You Evah" - you have to ask yourself wtf is going on? I feel like they are backing off from the media attention. They're receding back to obscurity, which isn't a bad thing if they make more albums like this....although, I wouldn't mind another Gimmer Fiction.

And another in the year of Big Surprises, I would never have guessed that MySpace Angle-Purveyors Tegan and Sara would release one of the year's best albums, but the Con has earned a spot on the year end list.
